I'm putting together our itinerary for a Phoenix trip in mind-January. We only have 3 full days (Sat-Mon) with 3 teens who mostly want to hike and sight see. Planning so far:
Saturday: Goldfield/Apache Jct. and hike at Lost Dutchman State Park. If we don't go to Sedona, we'll probably do a 4x4 trail tour here.
Sunday: Sedona or Tucson? Looking for recommendations, as I was originally thinking Tuscson, although I think the scenery and hiking at Red Rock will be something the kids will like more.
Monday: Stay around Phoenix (Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix Zoo (if you can still feed the giraffes there?), Mesa Market and possibly Roosevelt Row area. Need to find a fun restaurant for DD's birthday dinner - she is more into American fare but we need gluten-free options.
This trip is for DD's birthday, so I would take any specific suggestions that a 16 y.o. may like. Also, can someone tell me if you can still feed the giraffes at the Phoenix Zoo? I would really appreciate insight on Sedona vs Tucson. Originally we planned Tucson so we could see optimal cactus, although I think we can get our fill around Phoenix. Sedona looks so beautiful and I think the jeep tour would be the most fun there. She also likes little shops and we need to find decent gluten free food options wherever we go.
TIA!

Sedona will be beautiful! Very touristy! Lots of shops and food choices. We live in Phoenix and very rarely go to Tucson.

Tucson is wretched. It’s ugly and old and overcrowded and run down. Don’t waste your vacation there. Sedona is gorgeous.
Yes you can still feed the giraffes but it’s at a specified time each day so you’ll want to call and see what time that is for the day you want to go.

We are in the Phoenix area now, were in Sedona in October, and will be in the Tucson area for all of January (for the 2nd winter in a row.) Keep in mind that both Sedona & Tucson can be almost a 2-hour drive from Phoenix depending on where you're going, so 4 total in a day plus activity time. There are plenty of saguaro cacti around Phoenix, so you don't have to go to Tucson to see them.
Sedona is unquestionably stunning for hiking. It is also very busy every day of the week and you'll have to pay for parking at any trail head where you should arrive very early to get a spot. There are pay kiosks where required that take cash or card. The city is full of shops, restaurants, everything, you will have no trouble finding gluten-free there. If you only have one place to go hiking and you don't mind other people, Sedona will wow you.
Tucson also has great hiking in Saguaro N.P. (both districts), Mt. Lemmon area (could be snowed out at higher elevation, will be cold up there in January) and Tucson Mountain Park. I think the saguaros there are prettier than those around Phoenix. It is more "desert-y" than Sedona, not red rock. The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum (zoo, aquarium) is fabulous. Feast restaurant was very good (I'm gluten free, had no problem) Blue Willow is on my radar in a few weeks.
We'll be at Lost Dutchman soon, friends highly recommend any of the trails there. All of the Maricopa Regional Parks (7 surrounding Phoenix) have excellent trails and activities. Also to note is that the Phoenix valley is very wide, and it can take 1.5 hrs to cross from the west to the east.
Have fun and happy DD birthday!🙂

I was somewhat aware of the drive time from when I visited before plus we drive a lot to get anywhere around home, so we are used to that, but it's a good reminder to factor it into our plans!

The Mesa swap is insanely crowded also. So you would need to plan on several hours to go through it with all the people.
Grab one of the maps of Sedona when you get there. I was out there every year for about 10 years and when I went back a couple of years ago, there were things that I had never seen in all the years, and they weren't new things either.

Wow, pretty harsh description of Tucson. As a native of Tucson, still living here, yes there are areas that are old and run down, but then again the same could be said of areas of Phoenix and surrounding cities. I lived in Tempe for over a year and the traffic was horrendous. @shell29 - We live on the westside of Tucson, near Gates Pass/Saguaro National Park West. It's a beautiful area, lots of wildlife and cactus, near the AZ Sonora Desert Museum. However, if you're staying in Phoenix, you'll have your fill of saguaros! Sedona is beautiful, but is getting pretty commercialized. You might want to try the Prescott area, also. Flagstaff is also a great area to visit, only about 2 hours north of Phoenix. Our two older sons have graduated or are attending NAU, so we're pretty familiar with the area, since we visit pretty often. Be aware that it sometimes snows in Sedona during January and Flagstaff should definitely have snow on the ground. Flagstaff just received almost 15 inches of snow over Thanksgiving. Have a great trip! Tucson is wretched. It’s ugly and old and overcrowded and run down. Don’t waste your vacation there. Sedona is gorgeous. We love visiting Tucson, although our visits are geared more for the live music scene. But we always mountain bike there, and we love the trails and the city.

Phoenix native here.
I love Sedona and agree with all the recommendations to visit there.
Added: I almost forgot. Drive up Hwy 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon. It's absolutely gorgeous!

I don’t mean anything personal by it. My parents have lived there 10 years and I’ve spent considerable time there. The abject lack of care the city leadership demonstrates in maintaining any kind of infrastructure anywhere except near the Base or the University is astonishing. There’s no reason a city that size should be as dilapidated as it is. It’s shameful.

I also don't share the "wretched" opinion of Tucson. We've loved much of our time there, and are looking forward to more soon.

hi! You can still feed the giraffes, for an extra fee of course lol...they do it a few times a day, you can ask when buying your ticket what the times are.
I am zero help for gluten free places, sorry on that...
Sedona is very beautiful and I would choose that... but it is relative, you will probably have fun at either place. There is also a smaller zoo in Tucson call Reid Park Zoo ( not sure if they do giraffe feedings or not)
Have fun on his trip.

Picazzos is a local pizza chain that makes a big deal out of their GF offerings. Not sure if the whole restaurant is GF or if they just have a good GF selection but my Gf niece really likes it.

I lived in Phoenix and Tucson. I'd take Tucson 100 times over. That being said, when you drive into Tucson it does look dumpy becuase the I10 goes through the industrial district. There are a lot of beautiful things in Tucson, though. Old Tucson studios is a fun visit, the San Xavier mission is cool becuase most of the west is so new, it's fun to visit a building 500 years old. Also casa grand is between Tucson and Phoenix and I thought that place was fascinating. Biosphere 2 is also super cool and well at kitt peak observatory. There is also a kitschy ostrich farm just north of Tucson that was surprisingly hilarious to go to.
Sedona is very lovely and touristy, like Jackson Hole or Park City. It has beautiful red rocks and for straight up hiking it is only rivaled by some of the national parks in Southern Utah. It will be more expensive.
Also Phoenix traffic is horrific. Whatever the time your navigation gives you, double it.
I hope you have a fun trip. The American southwest is a beautiful place to visit.

Take a quick trip up to play in the snow at Mt Lemmon. /www.theoutbound.com/arizona/hiking/hike-to-seven-falls

Haven't spent a lot of time in Tucson so I'm partial to the Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden (don't miss the butterfly exhibit) and Sedona. Lots of hiking options in Sedona as well as in Phoenix.
if you are here before January 19th, the Phoenix Zoo has their Zoolights at night. Its awesome! Info can be found on their website regarding admission and hours of operation.
Fun restaurants to consider:
Modern Round Culinary Dropout Rawhide at Wild Horse Resort (taken by wagon to a large campfire dinner) Bowlero (bowling, but the food is actually very good) Dave & Busters or Main Event (similar)
....lots of escape rooms if your family enjoys those
Have a great trip!

You can hike in the Phoenix area also. We did pinnacle, gateway and south mountain. And also a very easy one where there had been a rock landslide.
And there’s is also the popular camelback hike
We did bald mountain in Sedona. You might have weather issues in January
