Another good reason for using their shopper and pick up service. I’d chalk it up to her saving you any embarrassment at the door if you were to have forgotten. I think I would have thanked her for the reminder if that were me. I really enjoy their grocery pick up service. At least, I did, until last week. I waited an hour. They had one employee and so many cars waiting they'd run out of parking spots and were just lining the street. The next day a friend of mine went and said it was even worse. She waited an hour and fifteen minutes then just left and cancelled her order. When I spoke to the employee (who was great and doing the best she could) she said the store manager took all of the employees out of the pick up and put them to in store pick up to help with Cyber Monday orders. It was awful. Plus it was dark and our Walmart is in a terrible part of town. I really worried for the employee's safety being out there in the dark with all the angry customers by herself.

She was just reminding you..I don’t see the big deal. I would honestly appreciate the reminder in case I forgot. Had she followed up her “Did you pay for these?” with “I just wanted to remind you, they’re easy to miss” that would be a reminder. She could even leave the first part off. That, to me, seems more of an accusation. That’s how I read it too. A reminder would have had more pleasantries and fluffier wording than what was typed

I had it happen at Ikea. They have their big shopping bags all around the store to encourage you to buy one. So I did. Then the next time I went, I took it with me. I went through the self serve checkout and then I was stopped, the security person counted up the items on my receipt (19) then he counted my items and got 20 & told me I didn't scan something. I said that I did scan every item, and every item was on there when I went through the list, then he pointed to the Ikea bag and said in a snotty tone, "did you pay for THAT?" So I replied in an equally pissy way "YES...the LAST time I was here...isn't that the point that these are reusable bags and you are meant to bring them with you and use them again?" and just stared at him until he said "ok" Idiot. They make a point of having reusable bags and then give you a hard time at the check-out when you bring in their reusable bag that they already sold you. Plus even if I had been trying to 'steal' it I spent over $500 that day and he's bitching about a $1 bag that probably costs them 10cents.

Stuff must be in their bags....they check if you bring your own bags. California customers all bring their own bags, and it is still hit or miss if we get bag checked. We get charged now if we use their bags.

She’s doing you a favor by asking you before hand so you don’t forget. She wasn’t actually accusing you of shoplifting. That’s what she would be doing if you forgot and were walking out with them in the trash can.

katladymugginsAt the Walmarts here, they go through your bags if the stuff isn’t in their bags. ( and I found that they do it in the store I go to in Montana. ) Well only at one entrance, I now park at the non food entrance, they don’t check at those doors to often.

I won’t say that t doesn’t irritate me, but I remind myself that there are people out there scamming retailers. We have a saying in our house—someone had to go and ruin it for everyone.

I hate it when they ask to see your receipt on the way out. Superstore here began doing that several years ago. There was a long line of people waiting for the woman to look through their stuff, and I thought "screw it" and walked past her. She ran up, stopped and blocked me and told me I could not leave until she checked my cart. I turned around, went to customer service, told them what I thought of that whole incident and had them do a complete refund of my entire basket. I didn't go back into that store for over a year, until I heard that too many people had complained and stopped shopping therem and they got rid of that policy. I used to get my groceries there every week. Now I may go 4 or 5 times per year. Costco checks receipts and to be honest, I never thought anything of it. I still don't. Doesn't bother me a bit.

I don't stop for the receipt checkers, they usually say I need to see a receipt and I tell them that they don't and I keep going. I may have signed off on that at Sam's Club with my membership agreement but I don't have any such agreement with Walmart. I'm not rude but I don't stop. My husband and I are the same. We will stop for Costco, but nowhere else.

Its a loss prevention approach. One of the common ways people shoplift is they hide something inside something else. I doubt you are stealing the chips but they are trying to create a culture where people think they are being observed and would get caught shoplifting. They just want to say they see you with one item inside another item. If they do that to everyone then some more timid shoplifters will hesitate about shoplifting there. It’s not personal. When I worked in retail, strollers were a common vehicle for theft of large items, so we were taught to make a point to fawn over babies in strollers so that people would think you were paying attention to what was in the stroller.

That is a little weird - the part where she asked if you had rung them up. I'm assuming they were on the "not rung up" side of the scanner, so of course you hadn't.
On the other hand, I once walked out of Meijer with a cart full of groceries that I had not paid for. (there were extenuating circumstances, I didn't do it intentionally). I realized it as DH was finishing loading them into the car. When we went back inside to tell the person working the self scanner lines, she said that she had just cleared it out and said that she would have just kept going if it had been her. We had to go to the car, get all the groceries and come back in for them to scan them again.

Don't they normally accuse people of shoplifting after they get done with checkout and when they're heading out the door? I don't use the self checkout much... the lines are usually pretty short, if any at all at my Walmart. But I used it one evening when I ran in to pick up a couple things. I scanned all my items. The screen did a weird flicker thing on my first item, but I didn't notice anything odd. I put my stuff in the bag and got ready to pay when two ladies descended upon me and said I didn't scan everything that was in my bag. I said Oh heck yes I did! We did the count - sure enough - that first item that I DID scan, didn't go through. I told them I scanned it, but the screen had flickered. They looked at me like I was a thief. I shop there quite a bit and I recognized them so I am sure they at least somewhat recognized me.... We rescanned that item - but if my DH hadn't been waiting outside I would have made them show me the video of me scanning it. I still am pissed about it. LOL Can’t stand how Walmart treats everyone like a shoplifter with the whole “receipt check” on the way out the door either. They completely quit doing that at my Walmart.

Can’t stand how Walmart treats everyone like a shoplifter with the whole “receipt check” on the way out the door either. It must help their bottom line, but it’s very off putting. They have to. Because people steal from them EVERY DAY. Shrinkage is a real problem in retail, and they’re taking steps to combat it. I would much rather deal with receipt checks at the door (like at Costco) vs having them hire employees to specifically profile and monitor people as they make heir way through the store. That would be something to get worked up about. But receipt checks? That takes 5 minutes max (assuming you have to wait in a line), and then it’s over.

I'd much rather have them check my receipt and remind me to pay for items than have prices continue to rise due to theft.

I agree, my WM has 1 human checking people out mostly and it’s just so people can get cigarettes...it’s now self service mostly and it’s always backed up so far. I’m one that likes the self service part but the fact that they don’t have humans checking people out no more is causing huge lines in self service which is annoying. I wish we had a Target around...I hate WM.

My closest Walmart is torn down to make room for a huge monster Walmart. I am sad, it was a nice store, almost unwalmart like. I will miss it but probably not shop at the new one.
The store near my DS’s college only checks the receipts of certain people, they are profiling somehow. For instance I bought stuff- 2 bags $40 in the middle SELF checkout lane where only the eyeglass place could see me. No cashier, nothing. DS bought TWO things in the check out lane with a cashier right in front of the door where the receipt checker can see him checking out & paying. They checked him but not me. It was bizarre.
I’m probably done shopping at Walmart because I don’t like huge stores. I don’t want to walk 1/2 mile to the other end of your monster store for a quart of milk. I have better things to do with my time.

Can’t stand how Walmart treats everyone like a shoplifter with the whole “receipt check” on the way out the door either. It must help their bottom line, but it’s very off putting. What bothers me about this is the inconsistency of it..half the time you have people there checking and then the other half you have people there that’s suppose to be checking and they look at you stupid like “why are you standing there with your receipt out” and tell you to go. I left WM one time and there was no receipt checker there and I just kept walking..girl comes running after me yelling I need to stop so she can check it. I had a few words for her. I would have been pissed if what the OP wrote had happened to me. If I haven't even rung it up yet? don't accuse me of stealing ahead of time. And I don't need any *reminders* either... I'm an adult, thanks- I know how to ring up my own groceries. I'm okay with them doing it at Costco. Costco is a discount club, I'm paying for the privilege of shopping there for the lower prices, a lot of what they sell there is bigger-ticket items, and I assume that checking receipts is part of what keeps the prices lower. Walmart? nope. It's a public store. IMO, checking receipts is not part of the *privilege* of shopping there. I don't stop at Walmart for them to look thru my bags. I just walk out, and so far no one has stopped me. Which means, in my opinion, since they're not doing it for everyone, that what they're doing is a manner of profiling. Stuff must be in their bags....they check if you bring your own bags. ^^^ not true, in my experience. I've never had anyone ask me to see what's in my bags just because they're reusable shopping bags. And if that IS their policy, it's a horrible one. Plastic bags are one of the WORST offenders for highway roadside traffic around here that I've seen. Walmart as a corporate entity should not be contributing to it with a policy like this.

Had she followed up her “Did you pay for these?” with “I just wanted to remind you, they’re easy to miss” that would be a reminder. She could even leave the first part off. That, to me, seems more of an accusation. please keep in mind that she probably gets paid less than 10$ per hour which is hardly enough money to have to evaluate how every sentence you say to a customer is going to be interpreted.

I’m not sure how the amount of money she makes relates to her willingness to not offend a decent amount of customers. Hell, to try and avoid offending any customers. I would have known as a teenager not to say what this associate said without softening it and I made the minimum wage. What amount of money should you require before you are willing to put in the effort it takes to provide good customer service? And the company should realize that those with this particular job are in a position that has them potentially offending someone almost every time they interact. Better training, or employee selection, was warranted. Except that it’s Walmart.

I'm about >< close to not shopping at WM anymore. They moved all of the shaving, makeup, face wash, and nail stuff (basically the "beauty" stuff) into a locked & guarded area. I KNOW that makeup and nail polish, etc is easily stolen, and likely they do lose a lot from that, but shaving cream? Really? Now we have to go into a locked area to get a can of Barbasol? If I chose to pay for it "up front" that's fine, but it has to go into a locked little case like how they do games/movies, and taken to the front of the store where you have to go to them and tell them that you have such and such, they walk it over to your register, THEN they unlock it and let you scan it or have it scanned. Nope... not worth it... Target is close, they'll be getting my $.97.

The face cream I use is in that section. I buy anything I need in the locked area at Target now. I hate that they lock up such common items as face cream! I also notice a lot of locked cages all over WalMart. They might as well lock the whole store and we just order at a desk. Just kidding of course, but I am a little bit serious. Lol!

I wouldn’t mind the locked areas in stores quite as much if I didn’t have to go on a manhunt to get someone to unlock them, if it didn’t take so dang long, and if the people helping didn’t act so danged impatient when I am trying to make your selections. I almost never go to Walmart so I haven’t experienced it there. I’m talking about at craft stores. I actually appreciate that they do it with products that can be sniffed for safety reasons. But you can’t sniff copics...and I hate to be rushed when choosing them. The same with jewelry findings.

walmart doesn't do that here. the only place i know that does that is costco. so far as i can tell, they look for electronics but other than that, they take their sharpie and check it off and send me on my way as i don't buy electronics. i can't imagine walking by and saying "no thanks". cuz i didn't steal and i know they are trying to ensure that doesn't happen so... but i fully acknowledge i am a "rules" person. lol! one year when DD was about 4, i set off EVERY SINGLE alarm as leaving stores. i told people before i left - gonna set off your alarm. didn't know why. turns out - when i donate her winter coat, i found the magnetic strip in the inside of the tag in her coat. always checked after that to ensure all those were removed!

What’s so annoying about that is I’ve watched people walk out the fire exit with full carts of unpaid merchandise-including TVs. No one stops them. The manager acted annoyed when another customer and I called the police.
