I went shopping for groceries at walmart and one item was an open topped trash can. While I shopped I put my chips in the trash can so they wouldn't get squished. I proceeded to the self scanner and was about halfway through scanning my items when the cashier in the area came up to me and asked to look in the trash can. I said sure. She pointed to the two items and said "did you pay for these?". Of course I hadn't. I was still ringing up my stuff. Which is what I told her. She said be sure to ring them up. Really? Don't they normally accuse people of shoplifting after they get done with checkout and when they're heading out the door?

She’s just doing her job. We are told we have to look in suitcases, plastic bins, etc. There are cameras watching us at all times and could be fired if we don’t check things. And, I would assume she was just reminding you as you would be surprised how many people forget to scan the stuff under their carts.

Can’t stand how Walmart treats everyone like a shoplifter with the whole “receipt check” on the way out the door either. It must help their bottom line, but it’s very off putting.

I get that but why ask if I had paid for it when I hadn't even finished ringing up? I've bought things like this a lot, even recently, and never had anyone ask. They ask for the receipt on the way out if there's anything not bagged but never have I been questioned while checking out.

I recently got all done paying for my items and realized I had forgotten something. Another time I almost forgot the water on the bottom of the cart. So it can and does happen.

At least she was being proactive in her accusations Last time I was there a door-checker stopped me to check my receipt I was annoyed because she couldn't be bothered to stop talking to her friend (not an employee but clearly a personal conversation) until I was nearly all the way around here. She asked to see the receipt and I told her it was in a bag (pointed to the bag with the receipt clearly right on top)....she said "oh no, I can't touch your bags, you'll have to get it out" So I walk around the cart to get the receipt that was about 3 inches from her hand, she glances at the receipt then starts touching my bags to look in them. I was in a crabby mood so I actually said something like "interesting that you can't touch a bag to grab a receipt right on top but it's just fine to dig thru them all". I wasn't stealing anything and really don't care about her looking in my bags it was just the ridiculously stupid "rules" that rubbed me the wrong way that day.

However as an honest shopper who wouldn’t dream of taking anything without paying, I would be a little annoyed that an employee wouldn’t give me the chance to ring everything up before questioning me.

What bothers me about this is the inconsistency of it..half the time you have people there checking and then the other half you have people there that’s suppose to be checking and they look at you stupid like “why are you standing there with your receipt out” and tell you to go. I left WM one time and there was no receipt checker there and I just kept walking..girl comes running after me yelling I need to stop so she can check it. I had a few words for her.

I hate it when they ask to see your receipt on the way out. Superstore here began doing that several years ago. There was a long line of people waiting for the woman to look through their stuff, and I thought "screw it" and walked past her. She ran up, stopped and blocked me and told me I could not leave until she checked my cart. I turned around, went to customer service, told them what I thought of that whole incident and had them do a complete refund of my entire basket. I didn't go back into that store for over a year, until I heard that too many people had complained and stopped shopping therem and they got rid of that policy.
I used to get my groceries there every week. Now I may go 4 or 5 times per year.

Another good reason for using their shopper and pick up service.
I’d chalk it up to her saving you any embarrassment at the door if you were to have forgotten.
I think I would have thanked her for the reminder if that were me.

My Walmart has been checking receipts for quite awhile and this what I noticed it has morphed into. They ask for the receipt, scan the barcode on it, look at their reader, give you back the receipt and that’s it. I think they are checking that you have a receipt that is current. Once in awhile they will check your cart, but not often, even if you have unbagged items. And a few of the checkers don’t even check your receipt. I just smile at them and keep on walking. Maybe they are profiling. Lol! But when I see one particular guy, I know he will check. He checks everyone!
And our self checkout has signs up that it is for express checkout, 20 items or less. There are about 10-12 machines. One gal walks around but I’ve never seen them look into people’s items.

I agree about the check your receipt at the door thing. It does not make for a positive customer experience. I would rather spend a little more and go to Target or HEB than be treated like a common thief.

I don't stop for the receipt checkers, they usually say I need to see a receipt and I tell them that they don't and I keep going. I may have signed off on that at Sam's Club with my membership agreement but I don't have any such agreement with Walmart. I'm not rude but I don't stop.

Sadly I've started putting everything that will fit into a bag. They said they only check when there are unbagged items. It's a big waste of bags.

I figure since it works for sams club, the regular stores decided to do it. I frequently buy large items without a bag, so my door greeter guy and I are friendly. He likes that I always have my barcodes out, I used to work at sams club lol. But it’s better than having just a door greeter, who does absolutely nothing. Putting a scanner in their hands to try to discourage theft is a smart move.

Had she followed up her “Did you pay for these?” with “I just wanted to remind you, they’re easy to miss” that would be a reminder. She could even leave the first part off. That, to me, seems more of an accusation.

Legally in most states you can just keep going. Places like Costco has it in their membership agreement, but Walmart cannot force you to show your receipt. My brother in law walks by with a quick no thank you every single time.

I'm getting tired of being treated like a thief every time I walk into a Walmart.
The receipt checking I was ok with. However I think it's funny that if I have everything bagged (in my own bags) they don't question anything in my cart. But, if I have one item out of a bag because it won't fit, all of a sudden my whole purchase is scrutinized.
Then, a couple of days ago I was using the self checkout at Walmart and the cashier overlooking the area stared at me the entire time. I kid you not, did not stop watching me for one second. Maybe I was taking too long? I don't know but it was really off putting being stared at and yet never greeted or acknowledged. If she had "reminded" me not to ring something up I probably would have cancelled my whole purchase and gone to see the manager. And I'm not "that" kind of person.

Ours just scan the recipe for the date. Evidently people would take old receipts and try to leave the store with the same items. Hence, checking for the current date. She never looks in my bags and always calls me *Sunshine*. Very friendly woman.
