I am going to Kansas City this weekend with my daughter and a friend. We are going to Powell Gardens, which I think is near Lee's Summit, on Friday evening, and we want to go the plaza on Saturday. I would like to find a hotel closer to the Plaza, but I have no idea what area of the city to even look for one. I have never been to KC other than driving through, so any help you can give me is appreciated.

It kind of depends on your budget, but The Fontaine is nice.

We usually stay at the Sheraton (used to have the rotating restaurant) when we stay on the plaza. The top is still open but I think you have to pay to go up if I remember right.

Powell Gardens is about 30-45 min outside of Lee’s Summit. It would be even longer from Powell to the Plaza area (hr maybe a little more). If you don’t mind driving at night, I’d stay on the Plaza (don’t venture to far out of the area). If you’re only staying 1 night, you might consider staying in Lee’s Summit Friday night and then get up and head to the Plaza Ssturday.

We usually stay at the Sheraton (used to have the rotating restaurant) when we stay on the plaza. The top is still open but I think you have to pay to go up if I remember right. This is the Sheraton Crown Center - both it and the Westin across the street are very nice. I haven't been up recently, but I believe I heard that the top level is now the lounge, so if you have access to that (through room or loyalty level) you can go in. But, I think that you'd still be able to get a pretty good view just going to the top level and looking out the windows in the elevator lobby area. Crown Center is nearish the Plaza, but you'll still have to drive to get there (and really most of the hotels right at the Plaza are quite a walk from the actual shopping areas as well). If I was picking a place to stay, though, I'd pick one of the Crown Center hotels, because the Crown Center plaza area (not "The Plaza" - just the outside part of CC) is really beautiful this time of year, especially at night. There's outside ice skating there, too, if you're interested in that. Both hotels are connected by enclosed pedestrian walkways to Union Station, which is also lovely & decorated. At Union Station, you could catch the (free) streetcar through downtown all the way to City Market (fun shopping & great restaurants Saturday/Sunday), or stop and wander along the way. If you do happen to go to City Market, I highly recommend Beignet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The Steamboat Arabia Museum is in the City Market complex and is very interesting. If you want BBQ and prefer to minimize driving, you can take the pedestrian Link from the CC hotels to Union Station, then there's a bridge across the railyard part that will take you over by Jack Stack BBQ. A lot of the restaurants at the Plaza are chains, but one good local one is O'Dowd's. Across the street from US and up the hill is Liberty Memorial and the WWI museum. I haven't been to the museum, but everyone who has recommends it highly. It'd be a bit of a hike up the hill, but you could likely find Bird or Lime scooters in the CC area to make it a bit easier if you want. If you happen to go to the Power and Light district, County Line (sister to our famous Joe's BBQ & the only place you can get it on Sunday) is good BBQ, and Dubliner good Irish/American food.

I agree with everything coaliesquirrel said. I wanted to add if you do find yourself in P&L we have had very good food at YardHouse, even though it is a chain. If you come visit the Liberty Memorial on a weekday, head across the street to the Federal Reserve's Money Museum. We currently have an exhibit on Oragami money. and as others have said, this whole area is NOT one you want to wander at night If you stay in the Crown Center complex, everything is inside. If you stay on the Plaza then be aware the area is not the best after dark, though beautiful with the lights this time of year. There are places in Lee's Summit to stay that will get you closer to Powell Gardens. It is a drive from the plaza to the gardens.

Thank you all for all of your advice!
I booked us at the Hampton Inn in Lee's Summit for tomorrow night after we go to Powell Gardens. Saturday is up in the air...our plan was to stay Saturday night as well, but we are going to watch the weather since snow is expected at some point on Sunday. If we have to, we will drive back home Saturday night. We will just find a hotel that day if we decide to stay.
I know, the snow isn't supposed to be that much, but I had a traumatic experience driving across Missouri a few years ago when I got stuck in an ice/snowstorm and it took me 12 hours to drive from Columbia to St. Charles, which is normally less than 2 hours. LOL I don't like driving on snowy, icy roads at all.
Thanks again for your help! <3
