But I won! (eventually)
Though I've not had any issues with my Cameo for ages, suddenly it began to misbehave. It didn't seem to be connecting and the software was throwing up error messages. I wondered if it was time to upgrade the software, if not the machine itself (it's a first gen Cameo) A couple of times whilst trying to cut some of the most recent freebies for my DD, I cursed it and threatened to throw it across the room because it wouldn't connect or wouldn't start properly. It didn't seem to want to "wake up" if you know what I mean. Last night, I decided it was time to sit down with time to spare and get to the bottom of it. I finally got it going and cut a wreath for one of my pages...before realising that the blade hadn't actually cut right through. I might have said one or two words....
This morning with renewed energy, I started over, rebooting my PC and so on. No joy. Eventually, I clicked through to the help files and discovered there's an issue with Win 10 and first gen Cameos. Who knew?! (Well, there's probably been a discussion here which I've missed) Anyway, I worked through the whole process as recommended for upgrading the firmware in the machine and thankfully, all went smoothly and exactly as described. I switched on and it did its friendly little wake up noise. Hooray! Whilst I was at it, I opened a fresh new cutting mat and a new blade too (wow....) and cut one of those files perfectly first time.
Who loves her Cameo?! (Dare I upgrade the software now?)

Yes, there have been a few discussions about this, but they might have been easily missed. When I had the issues, I decided to use it as an excuse to buy a Cameo 3, which I have loved. However, I have friends come over for card making once a month, and I provide the kits for the cards. After the new year, I may do the firmware update for my original Cameo and connect it to my older laptop, so I am glad to know that it is working for you. It would be nice to be able to cut two things at a time and still get more use out of my original Cameo.

I decided to use it as an excuse to buy a Cameo 3 I was trying very hard to be good, scrapnnana but that thought did pass through my mind I had looked through the conversations here in the hope of finding something, but the threads move on so fast and I wasn't sure how far back to look. I tend to read anything Cameo-related (I've learned to gather other peoples' experience before doing anything hasty, like upgrading software that way) but we were away last month and I missed quite a bit of chatter. I think anyone with a digital cutter knows the frustration when it suddenly stops behaving - well, the same with my fancy sewing machine too - and the thrill of watching it spring into action and work seamlessly again. Now, if I were brave, I'd ask you to tell us what you love about your Cameo 3....

I had the exact same issue. I finally spent some time with their online chat and they walked me thru how to upgrade my firmware. I debated just buying a new one, but don’t feel I use mine enough and I asked for a Scan and Cut for Christmas.

Now, if I were brave, I'd ask you to tell us what you love about your Cameo 3.... It has the dual carriage. It has a vinyl cutter at the back for those who cut their vinyl without a mat, a storage place for an extra blade. It came with an auto blade, which has worked pretty well for me. I think it has more features than that. Those are the ones that come immediately to mind. The biggest issue for me is the peace of mind knowing that I have a cutter which should work for a long time in spite of Microsoft updates or other issues, without having to resort to a fix over and over. I was pretty frustrated when my laptop would no longer recognized my original Cameo. It was a huge relief to set up the new Cameo and have it work perfectly on the first try.

scrapnnana all very persuasive, though like cmpeter I don't use it *that* much. Having said that, I think it's more important that the tools we use less frequently behave reliably, or else we just don't use them, do we? No need of a Scan and Cut here - I don't have room for another machine and I love my Cameo really scrapnnana do you use the Bluetooth feature?

I just upgraded to a Windows 10 laptop. I'm dreading getting my original Cameo up and running. I've been using an older version of the software so it will be a whole learning curve!

caspad , all I can say is that by following the advice and step by step process on the Silhouette website (which involves using an SD card) it worked perfectly, first time. Failing that, I too have found their online chat support to be invaluable. I now know not to soldier on without help, but to bleat in the direction of Silhouette USA and support will be forthcoming!

The steps were easy to follow and it didn't take long at all.

I bought a USB tree on Amazon to get a 2.0 port and it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have a link to the patch? I sat down to cut some vinyl for a shirt and found out about all the issues in a quick search. PITA.

Good job getting it sorted out. I'm impressed!
I know my limits in terms of energy and focus, and I should probably stick to my Big Shot and dies.

I understand that it is not a Silhouette blade, but I'm not sure what is meant about the different angles, etc. Is it difficult to figure out? Thanks!

iamcaro I know very little but what I've seen on various sites. I got mine from Amazon. There are 3 blade angles used for different types of cutting - I'm using the 45 degree blade. I don't know any technical info but it "feels" like it is sharper. I was struggling with cuts ... and now I'm not. No - I didn't find it difficult to figure out -- I just messed with it a little bit (after watching a YouTube video) -- but you need to keep in mind that I am not a perfectionist!

iamcaro I wrote a big post about the Graphtec CB09 blade holder recently. I included links to lots of professional resources 2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/99822/using-graphtec-blade-silhouette-cameo?page=1&scrollTo=2739009 I hope that helps. I also have wrote several posts over here about the blade holder and Cameo, if that helps any. I didn't want to write another long post and drive everyone crazy again, lol. I damaged my Cameo cord. I need to get another one. I think I have one in the garage but holiday craziness I haven't dug in the cord bin yet. When I do fix the cord I will try to write a step by step tutorial for the firmware update that will be a little easier to understand, if that would help you all. I can also test everything on my hub to.
