I logged onto the CFA website earlier to see where the smoke was coming from (I thought there may have been a fire nearby but it's actually the smoke blowing down from NSW). The I checked the NSW RFS site and saw this - quite a scary visual, with fires burning from one end of NSW to the other.

And now my family is affected in SA. We drove from 4 hours away early this morning to beat the worst of the heat and got an alert through the radio that a fire was nearby. It was very frightening. Thankfully it was 6km away and heading in the other direction but my brother lives in the area that is now a “leave now” warning as the wind has changed direction. My niece (his daughter) had gone there with her 10 month old as her house was in another area that was affected so they have all left to got to another nieces place.
Conditions are absolutely horrendous. Wind is swirling and it is still 40 degrees
So we are hastily rearranging our family Christmas that was going to be held at my brothers tomorrow. It doesn’t matter, we need to be safe.

AllieC - so scary and upsetting. I hope you manage to have a lovely family time despite what's going on not so far away! AussieMeg - The scale of it is daunting isn't it...wow!

Oh my god, that map is horrendous AussieMeg I hope all your family stay safe AllieC I can't imagine how frightening that is for you all. Stay safe everyone and lets hope the wind, for one thing, will die down so they can start to contain the fires. It must be so terrifying not to know where the fires are going next.

While I have been watching the fires on the news/tv it is not the same when it hits the home state. Two out of control and heavens knows what else will happen in the next few hours. So terrifying for the general population but the fire fighters are tireless and absolute heroes in my book.
The maximum temperature today was 115.9F (46.6C) but fortunately there has been cool change come in the last hour or so.

I have a friend (and her family) who went to visit her husband's mom in Adelaide...
So, I'm looking at a map - are the fires in the center of AUS or also in the south? all over? My DD mentioned the other day that koala bears are functionally extinct now because the fires destroyed their trees???

They’re fighting fires all over the country, face with vile conditions like this. 41.9 celsius as a *national* average is horrendously hot. And it’s the average, so there are many places that were much hotter. A couple of places in SA hit 51 celsius. It supposed to be worse on Thursday. 😔😔 I miss Australia a lot, especially at this time of year. But the extreme heat like this and fire threat, I don’t miss. Stay safe and cool, Aussie peas.

This is horrible for so many reasons. I thought the fire would be in the bush, not in the city! Fire is so unpredictable. Just wanted to say I'm thinking of you AllieC and your family and all of our Australian Peas and praying for all of those in this fires path for safety.
Sending you hugs.

Sorry for the first post. I was on the old board and have lurked here but just signed up.
I’m in Western Australia and although we are not as bad as NSW we have just been through an absolutely horrific week of fires ourselves. We live in a rural community which was under direct threat from an enormous out of control fire. I evacuated with the dog and DH was supposed to follow but the roads were all closed about 15 minutes after I left so he got stuck there. The emergency warning text message said “seek shelter and actively defend” which he had to do. Very scary.
Our firefighters did the most amazing job possible. Only one house was lost on the first day of the fire. They managed to steer it around every other area with homes for the next 6 days. I cannot thank them enough. DH remained safe but was stuck in our area for 5 days due to spot fires, flare ups and road closures. We got power back on yesterday after 8 days without, so I could finally return home for good last night. The power company had to re-do the majority of the infrastructure for our area. Again an unbelievable job that that they did it so quickly.
My heart goes out to the people of NSW at the moment. I know we had a lucky escape, unfortunately some of those people are not as lucky..

South Australia is bad now. A cool change is apparently moving over right now but unfortunately it's bringing dry lightning as well. One dead in a vehicle accident, one person missing, 4 firefighters and 3 police in trouble with smoke inhalation. Do you live here? Yesterday was so hot, dry and windy - 45 degrees! I just read that Cosi and his family lost their farm near Woodside - but luckily all but one of their 400 sheep survived. A few years ago we were just 1k away from the evacuation zone but sadly the cattery near us did not make it and all the cats and most of the dogs perished. I still remember standing on my in laws property and watching the fires reach just across the road and listen to the houses go up in a nearby suburb ( where several people perished ) during the horrendous Ash Wednesday fires. We love living in the foothills of Adelaide, but it is scary during these dry summers- also knowing that many of the fires are believed to have deliberately lit. Corinne

Holy cats you guys. I am so sorry you are all suffering from these unbelievable fires and heat. Wishing for cooler temps and a much more helpful jet stream. In the meantime I will keep you tucked up safely in my thoughts while hoping and hoping you and yours stay safe.
