How are our NSW and Queensland Peas doing?
For those that don't know, there have been unprecedented bushfires (wildfires) in Australia over the past month. Much of Australia is in drought and there is limited water supply in many areas. Many smaller fires have merged creating massive blazes and we are in the midst of a huge heatwave in many parts of the country. Where I live we've had 45c for the past few days (113F) and 116F tomorrow with high winds forecast. It is frightening and I've friends whose property has been under threat for weeks now.
The smoke haze in Sydney has been terrible at times with very low visibility and people are having to stay indoors. Our fire-fighters are at breaking point. We have a huge volunteer state-based fire fighting force in Australia that can manage the occasional outbreaks and states usually help out with the inevitable one or two big fires each year but they are physically and mentally exhausted and we are only at the start of Summer Most have their own businesses or are supported by employers to leave their jobs when needed but this has been relentless with no end in sight. Many will be on the frontline over Christmas while their families have their day without them.
Our Prime Minister is holidaying in Hawaii much to the disgust of many. I have no issue with leaders taking leave however the country is in crisis and he has been totally absent.
Think of us cold weather Peas.

I’m so sorry, you guys. Here in California, we really feel your pain. Wishing our friends in Australia well during this terrible time.

Horrific. 😢
I spend my summers in British Columbia, Canada. Last summer was one of the worst for forest fires. We didn’t see blue sky for months. My thoughts go out to all of you.

I keep reading about the high temperatures you're enduring and the inevitable fires - it seems relentless! Have there been any fatalities AllieC?

I'm really worried about tomorrow. 44 C (111 F) here in Melbourne and 46 C (115 F) in Adelaide and 47 C (116 F) for you AllieC . It reminds me of the lead up to Black Saturday. At least it's not going to be too windy. I hope your friends are okay. Tuesday was the hottest day in Australian history - the average across the whole country was 40.9 C (105.6 F). Hard to believe after such a cold start to summer, in Melbourne anyway. And now they're saying that record might be broken again tomorrow. That does not bode well for these fires.

They are on our news reports now and then but I see more about them on Facebook. They look absolutely terrifying and the conditions for people living close or down wind must be very debilitating. The wildlife must be decimated.

Watching those fires on the news over here is just horrific. I can't imagine what it's like in the kind of heat you are all experiencing either. Stay safe everyone.

They make our national news in Canada. Alberta sent a bunch of fire fighting experts over to help out a few weeks ago with an expected return date in 2020. Australia sent fighters to help with the beast a few years ago. I can’t imagine heat like that.

Regarding the bolded, but that's okay AllieC , because according to ScoMo (or ScoMoFo, as I call him /s), they want to be there... just like our prime minister wants to be in Hawaii... And in other news, I not only wouldn't recognise our deputy PM if I fell over him, I seriously don't even remember his name without googling it! I do believe the fires have been going for much more than a month because the daughter of a friend has been involved since the beginning of October. My friend said she's been paying her DD's mortgage payments for that long, just because she hasn't had an income in all that time. I googled and it appears that the first fires started in early August. I should have remembered because now I can recall saying to my DH in August that it was still winter and wtf was going on!!!

t2x yes that comment by the PM infuriates me. He has no fucking idea. I worked for the CFA for a number of years coordinating training for 54 brigades in rural Victoria. They do it because they want to help protect their community but there is a limit and he is clueless as to their sacrifices. And yes the fires have been going on for ages, I was tired and cranky when I posted!

ScoMo has announced that he's returning to Australia in light of the deaths of the firefighters. At this stage I think I'd prefer he stayed away. I'd never normally begrudge someone time off with their family but these are not normal times. Him returning now feels like too little too late. I'd prefer he never came back.
Stay safe everyone. An absolute scorcher today! "Hotter than a shearer's armpit" as my uncle used to say!

Apparently he was due home today anyway but he will make it look like a heroic effort that he is returning. What is going to really shit me is him fawning over the families of the fire fighters and probably attending their funerals. If I was their families I would tell him to stay away.

He doesn't even know how to act like a human! You are soooo right, jess, these are not normal times and I don't believe he should have left the country.

Our Prime Minister is holidaying in Hawaii much to the disgust of many. I have no issue with leaders taking leave however the country is in crisis and he has been totally absent. What makes it even worse is that he criticised Christine Nixon for daring to go out to dinner during the Black Friday fires. At least she stayed around and people have to eat even in the midst of bushfires. He said: That rock he threw 10 years ago has turned into a boomerang! This was spot on

I have school friends living in Old Bar/Taree/Forster area. The fires have been through their area now, but it was very much touch and go for a week for them. One evacuated, one stayed to fight. The pictures my family in Sydney are sending, remind me chillingly of 1993 when the city of Sydney was virtually cut off and surrounded by them on the south, west and northern sides of it. It was terrifying. Normally living in the city/suburbs you feel less under threat than those living in the bush, and that year bought it home that its really not the case. Wildlife have just been decimated. What makes it worse, is that quite often, some of these devastating fires are deliberately lit.
