DD has asked me not to share this news with everyone yet since nothing is final yet. And since you all don't know me IRL I can brag to you and you won't judge me!! Thanks.
My youngest DD is 21 and set to graduate from college in May. She decided last year that she'd like to go on and get a PhD after she graduates and has been researching and working on applications since last spring - huge spreadsheets, lots of research, etc. I'm so proud of her. She has an excellent GPA and darn good GRE scores, too. She want to get her degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, a branch of Psychology.
However, acceptance rates for Psychology PhD programs are pretty dismal. Some departments get a couple hundred applications and take only a dozen students. Her advisers at her college have told her she has a solid application package, but that she could get 3 offers or she could get none. She should look into finding a research lab job for the next year if she doesn't get into a program. She's okay with that.
Everything was due in Dec. 1 and most websites say that students will hear something around mid-February. So she was prepared to get through finals, start the new semester, and then start wondering.
ONE WEEK after her applications go in, she got an email from a professor at one of her top favorite schools asking for more info about her research interests. Then a few days later she gets emails from 2 other schools asking her for video interviews now and to visit them in January and February at their cost. Then 10 minutes after her first final exam this week, she gets an email from that first school that she loves AND THEY SAY SHE IS ADMITTED! (and its just 4 hours from us).
Oh my gosh, from worrying that she isn't good enough to get into a PhD program, to feeling like she has 3 dates to the prom. Then while she's dealing with all this, a professor at her school asked her to be his TA for the spring semester - a paying job!
We have always none what an amazing person she is, but she doesn't see it! So nice to have other acknowledge it.
Thank you for putting up with my mom brag!

WooHOO!!!!! That is super exciting . What an accomplishment!!! . Congratulations to her. My dd is currently in her third year of a double major in life sciences and psychology and was recently talking about a similar program after next year. Her university accepts 2, yes two students into their Cognitive Neuroscience masters program. She is not sure what she is going to do as she doesn't think she would be one of the 2 to get in but I am going to read her this post DD applied to TWELVE programs all over the country.

Huge congrats to her. I'm certain that there are other offers coming her way.
It will be interesting after she hears from everyone, if her favorite is still her favorite.

Congratulations! I was a psychology major, and even back then we were told it was almost impossible to get into a PhD program. What an accomplishment for her! And I don't even know you, but I am proud of your daughter for working hard on her applications and getting done what she needs to get done to be accepted. It was like pulling teeth to get my bright daughters to get college applications done.
