Just curious.
It is amazing to me how many mini storage spaces are here to be rented to people who have accumulated too many belongings, yet won't toss anything out.

If you have a shed for lawn/garden tools, I don't count that as excess belongings.

Nope. But they're very popular I know. I try and downsize stuff rather than looking for more storage.

We have a shed in the back of our property that has a bunch of junk stored... my mom n brother have some stuff.. my husband has some stuff...
We have a separate building that has the lawn mowers n weed eaters and bikes n tools n stuff like that... its also where we store the bbq pit and turkey fryer thing... stuff we use on occasion...
The storage shed is a place where everyone says 1 of these weekends we will go thru it and see what can be trashed... but that hadn't happened yet... lol... its wayyy in the back of 3 acres so it doesn't bother me much....

I don’t but my young adult kids do. Their Dad passed away in September leaving 63 years of stuff the he valued and told them they needed to keep. I don’t have room to store it for them so they got a storage unit.

I was thinking about it, but I am actually getting rid of a couple big things and had a spot that I could put my Rubbermaid containers. I have been tossing stuff and putting stuff where it belongs, like actually hanging all the “art work” instead of letting it pile up.

We do have a storage unit. My husband's hobbies take up a lot of space (big train layout in our basement and redoing an old car in our garage. Plus my husband and kids are packrats! Haha! I am a sahm, so have lots of free time, but they work/are students, so they don't want to spend their little free time decluttering. We keep our out of season stuff in the storage unit, summer stuff and Christmas stuff. It saves a lot of arguments, I love the storage unit.

We don't have a storage space right now, but have rented units in the past to store household items during a move.
Given that houses in California are built without crawl spaces, basements or attics I do know people who choose to use storage units for outdoor furniture and seasonal decor so that their garage can be used for vehicles. The cost of these units is pretty reasonable compared to the cost of buying a bigger house.
Our garage is essentially a storage unit.

We did for a year or two back in the days when we lived in an apartment. We used it to store out of season clothing, Christmas decorations, and odds and ends. I will add that it’s astonishing how little storage space some houses have. After living in 16 houses as an adult, we’ve learned to really evaluate where the lawn mower, Christmas tree and out of season items are going to be kept.
We currently rent a storage room for DD over the summer. She’s an out of state college student and we weren’t willing to haul her winter clothes and dorm bedding/stuff back to Virginia. She studied abroad this fall and her stuff is still in storage. Which is good since we now live in Belgium.

No, never.
I am too cheap to pay for a place to keep my junk. Sort, donate or recycle and garbage.

We do. I finally gave in so we could breathe. We went from 2200 sqft with an attic to 1500 sqft as a family of 5 when we moved back to expensive California. We sold so much furniture and purged so much stuff, but it still wasn’t enough. The cost of the unit is cheaper than if we had an additional garage space or bedroom. We can afford this school district this way—that’s how I justify it at least. Things in storage off the top of my head right now is our dining room furniture, our luggage, camping gear, Christmas decorations, the kids’ inflatable water slide, pool/sand toys, etc.
Absolutely worth it.

No - we don't rent a storage building. BUT DH owns his own shop (for rebuilding cars) that is not on our property (its downtown) so we do have some extra storage there. Our garages are not for storage - they are strictly for vehicles.

No, never. I am too cheap to pay for a place to keep my junk. Sort, donate or recycle and garbage. Not always an option when you move from a larger place to a smaller place. I rent one right now. I wouldn’t need to if I had a house but in an apartment, there are zero storage options and I’m not rebuying things like Christmas decorations every single year.

We don’t. We have a little junk in the garage that I’ve worked on discarding a little at a time, but we don’t have an attic, a storage room, or a storage unit and our basement is living space.
For us, it doesn’t make sense to store extra stuff for “someday”, we think if we end up in a bigger house someday we will make purchases as needed for it. I also don’t have any sentimental furniture or anything, I might feel different if I did.

We have a 2 car detached garage that is full of mostly my husband's hobby stuff and some of mine. DH also has an 8x12 very nice shed that is full of his other hobby stuff. Both are stuffed to the gills, and DH is always on me to clear out some of my stuff in the garage. Really, DH? You have five times the amount of stuff in our outbuildings and you want ME to declutter? He says that the house is all my stuff.

Dh has a space for some of his inventory. Storage units are probably mostly for personal belongings but they can be used for small businesses storage as well.

My husband keeps his motorcycle in a storage unit. He rides it about four or five times a month. The daughter's Harley is there too. Plus, there are a few other things. His lathe and other machinist tools are in half the garage and out on the back patio. He uses the back of the truck as storage too. It has a camper on it that locks so he keeps the things he needs to use when cleaning up the cemeteries where family is buried. He can't do that anymore, but has no place to put the stuff so it stays in the truck.

We put a lot of stuff in storage when we moved out of the country. We were supposed to be gone for 2 years but it turned into 6. When we returned, we gave almost all of it to the Salvation Army. We must have spent thousands of $ keeping that junk in there for so long. Never again! If it doesn’t fit in the house comfortably, we don’t need it.

We have multiple sheds outside with yard stuff and lots of stuff stored in our garage. What I dread is FILs storage units it 10 by 20 filled with stuff from his parents that he won’t deal with. He is spending thousands a year for this unit and it’s going on 10 years. It’s completely full to the ceiling. I assume at this point most things are ruined and we don’t even live in the same city but he expects us to go through everything when he dies. I so wish he would start going through it. I know he complained about stuff they stored and kept for years and I really hope that that coffee can of old rusty nails isn’t in the storage unit. They had some nice furniture but after being in storage i doubt anyone will want it. It’s nothing we would have wanted when it was in good condition it just isn’t our style. I wish he would have asked for help when he first moved stuff in at least for the larger items. The amount of money being spent to store this for so long is just crazy.
I totally understand people storing stuff temporarily we did that when we moved or even if you need to store holiday decorations or excess furniture if in an apartment. Small storage spaces aren’t expensive.

Another So Cal person here. The only time we had a storage unit was when we gutted our 1 story and added a 2nd and remodeled. We almost doubled our square footage and added lots of large closets and easy access attic space (but was smaller than before). Our two car garage holds 1 car and "stuff". No basement or shed.
My In-laws used to have a storage unit here in So Cal but then had a bunch of stuff stolen including FIL's childhood Lionel Xmas train, village and all the accessories. They now squeeze everything into their home to avoid needing a storage unit.

They honestly need to get an appraiser and get rid of the stuff. Give them a chance. Their father has only just passed. It may take them some time before they feel comfortable doing that, especially since he asked them to keep it. It’s easier to get the things appraised now, then they can take the time to sort and decide what to keep. We threw out so much and the auctioneer stole such from us because we were rushed into getting rid of stuff quickly. If we had someone come in and tell us what we had....

We have one. Due to circumstances out of our control, we had to move our family of six from our 2000sqf house into a 1100sqf temporary rental. I wasn't about to sell furniture that is still needed but have no room for until we buy another house, so $60 a month to store it is worth it to me.

Btw :
Because your relative asked you to keep their STUFF doesn’t mean you have too! That’s just horrible for someone to do and why would anyone lay that type of guilt on family.

We rent a storage space but it's for our side hustle not personal belongings. We downsized to a smaller house when we purchased and then started a side business that requires storing some larger items so a storage unit it is. Our profits pay for the unit so it all works out for us.

I will be getting one next week. I moved out of the marital home into a small apartment and don't have room for everything. I hope to get a house of my own in the spring and will only need the unit for a few months.

we have a shed in our yard - our house has no attic, no basement, no garage, and exaclty 4 closets - one for each bedroom. We needed somewhere for the holiday decorations, tools, clothes we're handing down to the youngest, toys we're keeping in case of grandchildren, camping gear etc...
