padresfan619 I'm chuckling reading this. Just out of interest, did he use the decorative towel because his own towel wasn't in the bathroom? If not, why not? I don't do decorative towels and I always keep our towels in the bathroom. The spares are in the airing cupboard, also in the bathroom, so if anyone needs more they can help themselves. The whole situation couldn't happen in my house. Oh there were towels hanging on hooks right next to the shower, I have no idea why he went for the decorative towel instead of the giant Costco sized towel that was right next to the shower. I think he was just on autopilot.

I’m the wife that comes bounding down the stairs shouting YOUR SON HAS LOST ALL MANNERS AND USED YOUR GOOD TOWELS TO DRY OFF!
But, my mother in law doesn’t have decorative towels. 🤣

I cannot wait to hear what happens when padresfan619’s MIL finds out her decorative towels were used.

Well we always do laundry before we leave because it’s just nice to come home with fresh clothes. She saw me putting the towel in the wash and I totally ratted him out. She laughed and said she didn’t mind that he used it but how could he not realize they were decorative, and don’t I keep decorative towels in my house? It always comes back to me, somehow!
He’s the baby of the family so it is really hard for him to do wrong in her eyes.

At least it was to dry himself off and not say give the dog a bath or something. OMG. We were at a friend’s house last night for a holiday party. Another friend has been staying there and has her dog with her, and she asked this guy at the party to hand her the dog’s food dish so she could feed the dog. The dude grabbed the water bowl instead and splashed water all over the floor. Instead of grabbing the roll of paper towels on the counter, he used one of the decorative embroidered kitchen hand towels to mop up the floor. I cringed inside thinking, “Who DOES that?”

I was an 80s bride. Darn straight, I had looker towels. I don't remember why we called them looker towels except that is what my ex SIL called them and we all did too. I think it was "you can look, but don't touch". Old habits die hard and that's just what you did back then. I don't have any in my bathrooms anymore but I wouldn't have cared if someone had actually used them. I don't really remember anyone actually doing that though. I guess back then everybody knew if you touched the towels you died.

Y’all just sent me down a rabbit hole search for decorative towels on eBay. One set is rolled for gift giving to look like a Swiss cake roll and one is embroidered with September. I can’t decide which is more odd.

Do women under 50 even do this? I know my mom did it for a short while when I was younger but I don't think she even does it anymore... I honestly don't know a single person that has decorative towels in their bathroom.
If I was OP I would have responded to MIL like 'oh goodness no, I don't keep decorative towels, I thought that went out of style in the late 80s'....

I’m a little over 50 and I have some cute embroidered hand towels in my bathrooms that I got from my BFF’s mom, but I don’t expect people to not use them, LOL. I just hope they use them for their hands and not to mop up the floor! 🤣😂🤣

And probably aghast that I don’t keep decorative towels in the house either! No wonder her perfect ds can no longer tell the difference between common towels and fancy decorative towels! It’s because of your slacking in the bathroom decor department!

My favorite part of this thread! Of course it is your fault. For my DH, the closest towel is what gets used. Decorative just doesn't compute as an option in the bathroom. I do admit that I have nicer towels that I put out for guests staying or when we have people over, but they are to be used.

I'll admit it - I have decorative towels. I just turned 50 this year.
I have decorative ones on the towel bar in our powder room by the front door - but there is a ring with a hand towel right beside the sink, so they don't get used. Decorative as in they have satin trim on the ends (a few rows in a few different shades, so about 6" of satin at the ends).
I also have decorative ones in our master bathroom. The room is rediculous in size and poorly set up, and our towel bar is across the room from the shower. So we also have a hook that hangs beside the shower and holds 2 towels. But these are just regular towels that match the bathroom decor and "look nice" lol.
