To dry off after his shower. Why she has full length body sized towels as decor hanging from the glass shower doors - I’ll never know. But it did make me laugh and think of the Peas.

I have to know what her reaction was.
How do you know they were decorative?

I have to know what her reaction was. How do you know they were decorative? I haven’t said anything to her, I know better! I knew they were decorative because they’ve been hanging there the same way for the last 8 years. I’m not sure what possessed him to use them today.

Does she wash them often? They have to be a bit dusty or something if they are decorative. You must report back if your mother says anything!

At least it was to dry himself off and not say give the dog a bath or something.

ETA: You said it was his mom in the title, sorry.

If they dry fast, maybe she won't notice? That or perhaps she'll just think some other uncouth guest used it to dry off their hands?

We now have proof that Mr. padresfan does NOT read 2Peas over his wife’s shoulder, otherwise he would haven’t touched them with a 10 foot pole.

My Dad always called them “show towels”.

She won’t find out until tomorrow when we bring our laundry down. I always strip the bed and bring our towels down to be washed on our last day. I’m not above saying “it was him!!!” when she finally realizes the “good” towel was used.

I always feel like there is no towel safe to use in my MIL's guest bath. She has 2 different full sets of fancy towels tied with lace on the towel bar. She has 2 fancy towels folded almost like origami on the countertop. It's the fussiest old lady bathroom I've ever seen!

You are nicer than I am, I would have ratted him out straight away just to not have mil think for even an instant that it was me.

At my mil's house we get these towels that are between a hand towel and small bath towel in size. Dh says they are the same towels they had when he was a kid. They are beyond rough so you have to be kind of careful so you don't over exfoliate while drying off. I am positive that if there was a contest for worse towels ever mil would not only win, but all other contestants would bow down to her in shame for thinking they could possibly compete.

My mom removed the decorative towels from the guest bath when the grand kids were there, until my DD (youngest grand child) was 14 or 15 I will admit to having decorated towels in our first home. They were just Walmart towels I sewed a fabric ruffle on to match the curtains and shower curtain I made for the bathroom, but the towels got used. It drove my mom bonkers

I remember one time I spent the night at my cousins house when I was little. The bathroom towels were stacked in the closet blue, red, blue, red. Somehow my uncle used a BLUE washcloth and a RED bath towel. Oh my, you’d think the world was going to end according to my aunt.

Some of my kids used mine too. I don't care..just one of those that has lace and cross stitch. Anything I care a lot about I put away when they come, but don't have much of that sort of stuff.

Whenever I visit, I get rough scratchy old towels, like Malibou’s MIL’s. My mom has a double closet full of brand new towels and sheets. The ones that we had to use were thread bare. 10 years after I moved out, many of the same towels that were in the closet were still in use.

I have some really thin towels that I use for my hair.
My kids use the old towels but could use the newer ones.
Now I want to go buy new towels and donate the old to the humane society

My Mom has decorative towels and everyone knows not to use them.
She has gifted me several sets of fancy, nice towels and I put them in the downstairs bathroom whenever she's coming over.

padresfan619 I'm chuckling reading this. Just out of interest, did he use the decorative towel because his own towel wasn't in the bathroom? If not, why not? I don't do decorative towels and I always keep our towels in the bathroom. The spares are in the airing cupboard, also in the bathroom, so if anyone needs more they can help themselves. The whole situation couldn't happen in my house.

There was a thread about using guest towels on the old board—probably 10 years ago. It’s what got me hooked on the Peas! I can remember reading parts of it to my DH while driving.
I probably haven’t had guest towels for 20 years. I can remember some really pretty, frilly, embroidered peach towels that we got for a wedding gift. I had those hanging on a towel bar over the toilet. It was so impractical to hang a bath towel there, as it would hang over the toilet. The fact that there were multiple towel holders in bathrooms in those days says that you were expected to have nice towels and towels for bathing.

Nothing to add, except I am taking notes so I don't become the freaky old mother-in-law with weird towel practices.
