The fires along the eastern coast are horrendous. Lives have been lost, properties burnt to the ground, livestock have died. The people afffected are suffering in unimaginable ways. I'm not sure how you ever get over something like this. If you ever do. I am in South Australia and we have fires burning but not to the extent of the eastern states. From our home the smell of smoke is evident and it certainly makes you stop and think. The eastern states are in a state of emergency and the army have been called in to assist the fire fighters. They are exhausted. Some of these fires have been burning since September and as some of the areas are also in drought many prayers have been said for the rain to come and put out the fires. It's horrific and I'm really sorry that it's happening. I pray for safety for all. Is it true that most of the firefighters in Aus are volunteers, that the government doesn't provide much in terms of fire fighting forces?

The biggest fires in my state are in coastal areas, which of course is where so many people are holidaying at this time of year. They've sent in a Navy vessel to evacuate up to 1000 people at a time from Mallacoota. I have friends who have been evacuated from another coastal town, and I'm waiting to hear back from another friend about her family, as the fires are only 25km (15 miles) from their town. There aren't any fires anywhere near me yet, thankfully. I can smell the smoke though. I can't complain though, NSW and Sydney has had to put up with the smokey air for weeks now. Looking at the fire maps, it seems like the whole freakin east coast is on fire. Meg that map is terrifying. I live in wildfire country in Calif. but what we're seeing is just horrendous. I'm so sorry.

I've seen two things in the last few days that are utterly mindboggling (as if the situation itself wasn't hard enough to comprehend). The first is how much land has been burned this season so far shown in comparison to some places across the world (scroll down for the interactive feature): firesAnd this article about how some of these fires are now making their own weather systems: weatherIt's sheer hell. I cannot imagine. And the number of animals estimated killed is 480 million. That is beyond tragic. And of course more dying all the time. I cannot conceive of the scope of this tragedy. There are no words, are there? Agreed. Impossible to wrap my brain around. Devastating and devastatingly sad. Not to mention terrifying.

The last I heard from my son in Victoria, they are not expecting much rain before the end of January at least. I sincerely hope that they are all safe and stay safe Sue. This must be an awful worrying time for you. My older son is in Melbourne, but in an outer, very leafy suburb. I worry that the fires will come close to them if things continue. My younger son lives in Canberra, though is currently on vacation in Thailand, so I'm not getting updates from him, but I have read that Canberra is badly affected by smoke, but not currently threatened by fire - though that could change at any minute. My dad is also down at his beach house on the Great Ocean Road, west of Melbourne. So far, the fires are mainly east of Melbourne, but the town where they are is between a forested mountain range and the sea, with not a lot of escape routes, so I'm praying that things don't heat up down there as well. It is hard being so far away and unable to help, but I am also thankful we didn't decide to go home for Christmas this year and be stuck in this. There are several members of my immediate and extended family who are in the fire emergency zones, and many of them are members of the volunteer emergency services, so I worry for their safety.

Is it true that most of the firefighters in Aus are volunteers, that the government doesn't provide much in terms of fire fighting forces? Cities have regular, paid firefighters for 'normal' things, like house fires and the like. Most rural areas in Australia have volunteer firefighters who are called on for bushfires. In extreme cases, like this year, the government sends military forces and reserves in to help. Australia is just so large and sparsely populated in rural areas, so it isn't practical for them to have full time firefighters, so people work at regular jobs but are ready to go out when needed to fight fires.

I've been horrified by these fires. I'm especially concerned for people with conditions like asthma, those who have faced a huge loss either a death or destruction of their home. And the animals, all that pain and suffering. Heartbreaking. I found this article about a Twitter thread interesting, firstly the comments about the firefighters and then the comment about the PM turning up to a township with multiple trucks and not one item of aid. He's not coming across well at all. The photo op he wanted wasn't the one he got. www.boredpanda.com/australian-wildfires-new-south-wales/

I am inner city and quite far from any actual fires, but yesterday you could definitely smell and see the smoke even where I am. I've been donating to the smaller rescue groups that help animals directly, as I know most of the bigger places will attract the majority of donations.
Nice to see some of the celebrities getting on board, I know Pink spends a lot of time here,, so it was heartwarming to see this tweet from her

But I’m honestly confused by this expectation of him showing up with trucks of aid. I don’t recall any PM doing that as a response to any major wildfires, when they’ve visited.. Honestly I think showing up with it, simply for a photo op - would garner him more criticism, not less. I’d certainly find it distasteful.

Who on earth is Jeremy Clarkson? Can someone enlighten me isn't he that wanker with impulse control issues that got himself sacked from that TV show about cars? The petrol fumes have clearly killed off a lot of brain cells.

He’s the presenter of a long running car show called Top Gear. He’s an asshole of the highest order and should be ignored, like Piers Morgan and Katie Hopkins.

We had weird yellow/orange skies in Auckland, NZ yesterday - caused by smoke particles drifting across the Tasman. I'm just horrified by the devastation and harm to people and wildlife. Thinking of all the Aussie Peas on the east coast.

I know, you don't want to google, I came across some photos when I was looking to donate and they are horrific. I donated to a couple of individuals who were driving down with carloads of supplies, but things are a bit more organized now, one collective that has formed is: ARC (animal rescue collective)and you can donate via paypal at: LINKthey are a registered charity
Then there's gofund me for a group building and refilling drinking stations for Koalas: HEREWIRES is also a well established animal rescue for native wildlife and most people are volunteers link for donationsWild2Free Inc. - Kangaroo Sanctuary you can donate hereLots of people trying hard to help however they can but it's still so heartbreaking.

We foster for a local cat rescue. Thankfully none of our carers have been affected by fires. They have provided us though with a list of genuine rescues who are desperately in need of funds if anyone is interested. This list is growing quickly. ***************************************************************************** Donation links to help Animals affected by bushfire season and drought! Sadly due to our society's broken system, virtually all of these organisations are volunteer-run and are not supported by government - so it's up to us, the wider public, to help these amazing carers and rescuers do their jobs. I know this list might be a bit overwhelming, but one way you could approach it is going through the links and prioritising the ones which are struggling to meet funding targets. Remember, every bit counts! And the more widely we can share this, the more bits there’ll be to count. _____________________ Farmed Animal sanctuaries generally don’t get the same level of public support as wildlife rescues, and there are several in need of help. Many are helping wildlife in need in addition to their existing residents, and most are facing difficulties sourcing hay and feed for their residents amidst heavy drought and the fire season. Here is another. Sydney Fox and Dingo Rescue Nonprofit Organization Learn More Sydney Fox and Dingo RescueLike Page Yesterday at 2:32 PM · TEMPORARY ENCLOSURES NEEDED FOR EVACUATED DINGOES Right now Sydney Fox and Dingo Rescue has 40 evacuated dingoes staying at a temporary evacuation centre near Goulburn. Our sanctuary is near both the Bungonia fire and Charley’s forrest fire. We have been evacuated for 2 weeks now and we’re sad and exhausted. More than anything we want to be able to get more dingoes out of crates and into temporary enclosures. While we are evacuated our dingoes are being rotated through small temp enclosures and large dog crates. We currently have 7 temporary enclosures and we’d really like to increase this to 10 in the next few days. Each temp enclosure will cost $560- this is because they need to be light weight/portable, easy to construct and have both a roof and a floor. Please let us know if you are able to help with the purchase of a temporary enclosure for our dingoes. I found this pic a while ago, it's a image of the fires made from NASA satellite data, although I think some of them are out now. And by looking at the other photo that Meg posted, this would be a correct representation. We have bush fires pretty much every year here, but this nation wide catastrophe is something I've never seen before. It's just mind boggling to see my whole country on fire. Sorry, I can't post the pic, but here's the link www.snopes.com/fact-check/australia-fires-iss-image/

Here is a list of where to donate from Katey Flowers, an Australian I follow on youtube I follow Katey Flowers on YouTube. She lives in Australia. She posted ways to help if you are so inclined to do so. I wish I could make pouches. I am not that kind of crafty. From Katey: As for how you can help, I want to make clear that my family has the resources and ability to support my grandparents and we do not require any direct assistance. I understand that everyone has different capacities and priorities, so please do not feel pressured or obligated to do anything that I've listed here. This is for those of you who have asked and who can. If you can't, that doesn't mean you don't care. Right now, what is needed most is donations, but there are other ways to help if that is not realistic for you. This is not an extensive or perfect list, you are encouraged to look into ways you can support that align with your values and abilities. Please feel free to share this post with others who want to help but don't know how. 💰DONATIONS: 💰 Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities: www.gofundme.com/f/fire-relie... NSW Rural Fire Service: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/... Victorian Country Fire Authority: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/supp... Red Cross Australia: www.redcross.org.au/campaigns... Port Macquarie Koala Hospital: www.gofundme.com/f/help-thirs... Adopt a koala (makes a great gift!): www.koalahospital.org.au/prod... WIRES wildlife emergency fund: www.wires.org.au/donate/emerg... ✂ FOR THE CRAFTY: ✂ Pouches needed for orphaned joeys. Please check the specifications for the organisation you are making for. Here are some patterns: Wildcare: wildcare.org.au/Documents/pou... WIRES: wires.org.au/wildlife-info/wildlife-f... 🇦🇺IF YOU'RE IN AUSTRALIA: 🇦🇺 Register you have a place for evacuees to stay: epr1984.wixsite.com/shareabedGet politically engaged on the issue of climate change. Protest. Disrupt. Boycott. Divest. Write to and call your politicians. Get angry. Scientists and fireys warned us this was coming and we weren't ready. Leave water out for wildlife. Check on neighbours, especially those more vulnerable or isolated. 🌧MAGICK & PRAYERS: 🌧 'Thoughts and prayers' is something we're all pretty tired of hearing because too often it is said in place of real action. But when it happens in tandem, I think it can be both important and powerful. People are scared, many have lost everything, our wildlife is dying, and we need rain. If you can incorporate these needs into your magical and spiritual practice, then please do.

I don't know what I can do other than let you know we see and hear you - and, of course, donate to some the causes above.

Anyone else seen the thread on FB that asks for 3 minutes of prayers, and suggests that if everyone would just do this, the fires would go out? Made me so freaking mad. Like all the prayers of all the believers in Australia and elsewhere aren't enough? Your god won't answer prayers unless a couple million more people join in? Made me so angry. Then someone put up an article saying that NSW was being drenched with rain and suggested this would put the fires out and praise god! I quickly found this was a very unreliable "news" source from NZ (pretty much tabloid news). I added an interesting article about how the small amount of rain received could actually end up making the situation worse. I'll link it here too. If you want to help, vote for candidates who will fight global warming; do your part to minimize your carbon footprint; send money to a charity to help victims, animal or human, of these awful fires. Do something concrete! Here's the article: fires
