On my way home at 9:45 last night I passed a shopping center where big crowds were gathered near the road, and police cars were up by the store. (It was at a Dollar Tree on Highway 6 in Sugar Land for Houston locals.) I watched the news last night, and checked on-line today - but there's no information on what was going on. I often see odd things that I'm curious about and want more info. I tried googling but couldn't find any info. How do you guys find out info like that?

Local crime/community Facebook pages. They drive me nuts most of the time but if there is something out of the ordinary going on you can bet someone's posted all about it.

Twitter. Most communities have someone who listens to the police scanner and posts what’s happening.

Thanks for the replies. Back in Florida I'd call a neighbor whose DH was a deputy sheriff for info. I guess it's just none of my business - LOL.

I just ask my nosy neighbor. I swear she knows the scoop on everything as soon as it happens.

My city has a website that posts some things call Police Blotter. Both the city and county have a site for postings of incidents. The county one is much more active though, but has a tad less detail Another source you can check out is My Neighborhood. In fact, I just looked up something on it today. Yesterday. when I came home, a police car was parked in front of my house as well as one across the street. I just came in the house through my garage and figured if it concerned me, they would knock on the door. The My Neighborhood said it was a Fire-Medical Assist, so I'm thinking the elderly man across the street may have needed medical attention, but thought it odd that police would show up, unless he passed.

The police may show up for elderly in case someone in the family needs to be notified. Not necessarily a death notification but notify who ever acts as a care giver for him. While the EMTs work with him the police can call whoever normally checks up on him to let them know he has had an event and is being transported to the hospital.

Police respond to medical calls for many reasons, including the ones listed. My police department sends them anytime there are accessibility issues (door locked, person home alone), if the caller appears to be hostile, for the safety of EMTS and several other reasons as well. Police officers are also trained in advanced first aid/cpr and can travel faster than an ambo and can begin life saving measures.

Very true, but the families around me all have more than one person living in the home. The report said it took 4.5 hours. I'm thinking that might have been between the 2 cars, so that seemed a bit odd to me as well. It did say assist Fire-Medical, so I suspect those were or had been there as well.

All that stuff shows up on Nextdoor here. Your Nextdoor must be very active. Mine is basically lost animals and a few requests for help.

Last week I was on the way out of the neighborhood and saw a truck speeding down the road past me with four squad cars right on its tail. I thought, . Didn’t have to think it for long because later that afternoon someone on ND was posting about it, and someone else added it was a stolen vehicle and the person was arrested. We have all the usual chatter about lost and found dogs and cats (the big one last week was a lost domestic bird that someone found), coyotes spotted in the neighborhood, vehicle break ins, etc. too.

Nextdoor is usually the best way, but HPD/HFD post all their incidents online. It's general details though - it never gets into specifics.

Girl, it's Houston. There are always cop cars pulled up somewhere. You'll get used to it. 😂
I don't know about Fort Bend County, but Harris County Sheriff and Houston police chief are good about updating on Twitter when there is something major going on. Try following your local and county police on social media.

I have to laugh when I see all of the recommends for the police blotter. DH and I moved to a small town (10,000 at the time) from having lived in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas most of our lives. And I loved to read our little newspaper. The police blotter section specifically cracked me up because it was always things like someone ringing the doorbell at 9:30 and when they open the door no one was there.

Sometimes things like that will be posted on our city’s police page, or the city page on Facebook. Other times I can find info by doing a google search a few days later. Usually by then someone has written about it in some form.
Or, if I’m really curious and can’t find anything, I’ll make a Facebook post and say “hey city friends! Did any of you see xx on Tuesday?” Almost always someone can fill me in.

Facebook neighborhood groups (I lovingly call them the Mrs. Kravitz groups, I'm a member of like 3 different groups in my little town).
