I don’t know if this counts as hand gestures: paper/product FONDLING.
All the rubbing and stroking is just weird to me. I love my supplies but I don’t feel the need for a product “petting”.
This show of “affection” is usually at the beginning of the video and can last anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.
No thanks!

Does anyone else speed up the videos when you watch them. I almost always do 1.25x speed, but for some I do 1.5. Especially for the real slow speakers. I also skip ahead at the beginning a lot.

Most of the time, I watch with the volume down. The word umm irritates me and I hear it a lot. I really can’t listen to anyone for more than a few minutes anyway, but I appreciate the content and time etc people put into it. I have my volume really low too. I completely forgot about the nail tapping and the super long nails - ICK on both! I do have to say, I mostly watch card and planner videos, not scrapbooking videos right now. Planner videos have more long nails, card videos have more hand movements. I don’t see much of either in the tech or food videos I’ve watched (so far).

I've noticed more long pauses, umms, etc. in crafting videos where the person is narrating *as* he or she is filming.

This is why I don’t do videos. There’s an air of self importance about the idea of process videos.

Lucky for me hand gestures don't annoy me or I would be left with very few people to watch. I do get very annoyed by sounds. So I am very much into someone whose voice I find soothing.
As for the hands, bad nails bother me. To be fair, I have chipped nail polish all the time because I like to peel it. But I am very aware that is looks icky. The worst was one semi-famous youtuber who had long yellow nails. She didn't have any nail polish on. I couldn't stand watching her videos. Those nails really grossed me out.
I think if you are going to put videos out there and you only show your hands they should be well kept. No hang nails (again, I have many!) chipped nail polish, broken nails, and especially NO dirty or yellow nails!

I've noticed more long pauses, umms, etc. in crafting videos where the person is narrating *as* he or she is filming. This is why I prefer voice overs (Jennifer McGuire, Kristi Marcotte). They are more prepared and thought out so they aren’t using fillers as they are thinking about what to say next. To be fair, I’m picky about presentations because I gave them as a trainer for many years and I judged and trained 4-H youth how to do them. So I’m aware that for me it’s a lot my issue on my pickiness!

Yes, I generally prefer voice overs too, with the video sped up through the fussy cutting and backing the cut file.

Hand wavers, flappers and even more so, the finger tappers & drummers. They all drive me crazy and I’m out. I’ve quit mid video of so many card makers that I’ve lost count.
My other pet peeve is trying to watch live feeds. They all seem to start with Hi Mary, hi Jeannie, hi Susan, Hi Edith, hi Elizabeth, etc. etc etc. They say hi to every freaking person that logs in. All of them. Ten minutes into the demo, they’re still saying hi to late comers, interrupting the demo. Ugh. Please just get on with it!

I have to move to another video if the hands become Jazz Hands. I also hate it when people do hauls and pull each and every thing out of crinkly sounding bag. One YouTuber said people loved the sound and that is why she did it. I had a hard time believing that, but I am sure someone said it. Not for me. I scroll on by.
I don't mind chatty as long as people are talking about the craft. A little personal info isn't bad either, but I have seen YTubers go on and on about their health or a kid in the hospital and that isn't for me either. Five minutes about your husband's surgery isn't my cup of tea. Thankfully I can just move on.

I noticed a youtuber who gives the same spiel about "subscribe to my channel and get notifications" at the beginning of every one of her videos and I find it annoying.

The hands drive me crazy too.
And while we are venting, I wish the people who replay fb LIVE had some way to just get to the demo and leave out all the greetings at the beginning. I don’t really CARE if Annalise suddenly popped up on line yesterday when it was actually live.

For me it's the bad grammar and made-up words (overtop, acrost, all of THE sudden, supposably, etc.) that really annoy me. Also the baby voices. I've stopped watching YouTubers for these and other reasons.

If I really want to watch the video, but can’t stand the noise (very much prefer voiceovers), I will mute it and put on captions.

Click on them and it will show if there is a caption option.

I haven't noticed hand waving other than some people who kind of wave to the camera when they start. But there are only a few things that really bother me within the content of the video:
* excessive rambling - I tried watching one channel and the scrapper would take 5 minutes explaining how she picked out these papers and will cut them. I never made it to the cutting portion of the process.
* using the same word over and over
* constant distractions - I don't mind an occasional kid or cat coming through but when it's all the time in every video or lots of noises in the background, I'll stop following that person.

* using the same word over and over Oh, yes. I stopped watching a YouTuber's beading videos because she said, "Mkay?" after just about every sentence. When Mr. Mackey on South Park does it, it's funny, but she's no Mr. Mackey. Mkay?

I love watching process videos but I don’t like listening 😂 but I’m afraid I’ll miss good info Depending on how you’re watching the captions option might be in a different spot. I think if I watch in my browser instead of on the YT app there’s usually a little CC (closed captioning) button in the bottom right corner. Not all videos have captions though.

I know these threads bring out all the pet peeves and I have plenty of them, but I also feel like I need to defend the YTers a bit. Not saying that anyone should watch things that drive them crazy - we all get to choose what we like and don’t like and don’t have to justify it to anyone. But I think it drives content creators crazy trying to avoid all the things that *might* make someone turn off their videos- can’t please all of the people all of the time.
Some things like ads are probably not in their control. Adblockers help A LOT - for a long time I didn’t know what ads people were talking about until my adblocker was disabled and suddenly they were everywhere! But now I watch in the iPad app and haven’t found a way to get rid of ads from in there.
The wavy hands doesn’t bother me so much but I do tend to fast forward to the action - I don’t need to see several minutes of hands. I watch a card maker who has a long spiel at the beginning of every video explaining about her series, liking and subbing, asking questions, etc. I’ve heard it a million times now but for other people it may be their first visit and so I don’t begrudge her explaining how viewers can help her, etc. I just fast forward to the good bits. At least she is scripted and to the point in her intros. But I enjoy listening to chit chat sometimes, if I really like the crafter and I’m in the mood/have time.
There are some videos that would be improved by ruthless editing, but that’s a lot of work that the YTer is doing (often) for free. With live videos that are posted to a channel to watch later I don’t have any problems with jumping forward past the chitchat. I use the 15 second forward arrow a lot when I have that available to me (is there a way to do that in the app? I don’t think so) but for the most part I watch live videos when I’m only half watching, doing something else.
I feel bad when I want to like someone but their style of video or their chit chat/voice/accent bothers me so I can’t enjoy their videos, but that’s just the way it is sometimes. There’s someone out there for all of us! Whether we like package crinkling hauls or will only watch voice-over videos for products we already own... (I’m mostly the latter)

I can't say I've come across the hand gesture thing whose channel are you referring to if you don't mind sharing. In regards to the commercials she probably has a monetized channel and I don't think they have any control over how many commercials appear. Personally I find her really over rated and she always has big plans but doesn't seem to follow thru. Who are you referring to? I’m curious.

I know that some YouTubers don't have complete control over ads but Nicole explained that she had reached a level on her channel where she did have the ability to have more ads. She made the decision to have several ads throughout her videos. The videos I saw before I unsubscribed had up to 6 or 7. Way too many for me. Of course, they're her videos and it's her choice but as viewers it's our choice to watch or not. Do you have an ad blocker on your phone?

I don’t watch her videos very often. I didn’t know that some YTers actually choose to have more ads. I guess that makes sense for them. But yeah, I’d be put off too. I haven’t used an adblocker on my phone. I have an iPhone and use safari but I don’t browse much on there. I have one on Chrome on my laptop. I watch YT mostly on the iPad app or on my laptop browser.

I mean I don’t ‘pet’ my new products per se but I do run a finger over many of them. And if multiples were bought I line them up by color ( like M&Ms ) And look at then for a minute before I put them away. I also used to smell new paper but new paper doesn’t usually smell anymore. Must be new inks & new printing methods don’t give you that new ink smell lol.
