I have started even letting ads run through because they get compensated more for people watching the entire ad if I really like the person.
I also think design teams should be compensated. But that’s another topic for the “why are design teams so white” thread.

I also used to smell new paper but new paper doesn’t usually smell anymore. My scrappy friend and I used to smell new Cricut mats and she would say, "MMMMMMMmmmm....Barbies..." She said they smelled like Barbies out of the package.

I use the 15 second forward arrow a lot when I have that available to me (is there a way to do that in the app? I don’t think so) Double tap on the right hand side of the screen (I think it's a 10 second forward rather than 15) Thank you! I just figured out how to move forward and back when I watch YT on Tv via the XBox so yay, winning at technology!

I recently uploaded more of a "chatty" video to my channel participating in a hop. And when I watched the playback I did notice that there were parts where my hands were flapping around a bit. I am a person who talks with their hands. And when there isn't anything in my video to keep my hands busy, well I guess they just went ahead and did their own thing. So I apologise if by some chance mine is one of the flappy hands videos you've watched. But, this was the first time that I've really filmed anything like this and it wasn't something that I was aware of to be aware of. Much like my first few videos where I "ummed" a lot during voiceovers without realising I was doing it. It's something I'm more conscious of now which will hopefully help me to minimise it in future I just watched your scrappy goals video and I didn't notice any flappy hands or any other annoying things, and I was watching it on my (fairly big) TV. I need to go back and leave a comment from my laptop and watch more of your videos because I loved loved loved those favorite layouts you showed! I think we all have little things we do that annoy some and don't bother others, some things that are just part of our accents (I love yours, very self conscious of my own which is all kinds of messed up) or mannerisms that are cultural or part of our personality (I had a friend who was quite dramatic who scared the living daylights out of waitresses in Japan because of the way she moved her hands around when she spoke!) Anyway, it's great that you try to improve your videos by being conscious of things like ummming, but also don't stress about it because many of us viewers won't even notice and would do much worse if we tried to post our own videos

I just have one thing to add... Ad blockers! No. More. Ads. None. It is glorious! I totally second this, it annoys me when I watch youtube somewhere without an ad blocker and get the ads. I love my adblocker so much. I have a recipe management app with a built in browser that doesn't block ads and I'm SHOCKED by the massive number of ads on recipe websites that I never have to see. Sometimes I can barely cope long enough to hit the "download recipe" button, there are so many videos and ads and pop ups on the screen. It overloads my brain.

I totally agree about the hand gestures and the long disorganised rambling videos really annoy me as well. Please work out a script beforehand or just record and do a voiceover.

This is why I prefer voice overs (Jennifer McGuire, Kristi Marcotte). They are more prepared and thought out so they aren’t using fillers as they are thinking about what to say next. Yep, totally agree.

Does anyone else speed up the videos when you watch them. I almost always do 1.25x speed, but for some I do 1.5. Yes, and now I have trouble watching some of those videos in normal speed. I also hate it when people do hauls and pull each and every thing out of crinkly sounding bag. One YouTuber said people loved the sound and that is why she did it. I had a hard time believing that, but I am sure someone said it. I like the crinkly packaging sound Oh my gosh. To me it sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. Over and over. I knew someone here would like it.

I wish more people could get paid for it. I have started even letting ads run through because they get compensated more for people watching the entire ad if I really like the person. I did not know that. Logical if I think about it. Can anyone say how much of a difference it is?

Just over here reading every response and hoping I don't do any of the things mentioned above...
As far as ads. ...super annoying. You do have control over how many, YT just puts them at spaced out intervals for you.
Anyone have an ad blocker recommendation? Something safe lol

I am one of those. I can't watch at normal speed anymore...I have to on my tablet because it plays like a computer but doesn't have the same features. I wish I could figure out how to make YT play like my phone where it is automatically full screen when horizontal and allowed for a faster speed. The only time I watch things real time is when my kids are hogging the internet (our internet speed is awful so more than 1 device is not recommended) I have significant buffering issues...in those instances it is either play real time or pause every few seconds to allow a bit more of the video to load.

I just watched your scrappy goals video and I didn't notice any flappy hands or any other annoying things, and I was watching it on my (fairly big) TV. I need to go back and leave a comment from my laptop and watch more of your videos because I loved loved loved those favorite layouts you showed! I think we all have little things we do that annoy some and don't bother others, some things that are just part of our accents (I love yours, very self conscious of my own which is all kinds of messed up) or mannerisms that are cultural or part of our personality (I had a friend who was quite dramatic who scared the living daylights out of waitresses in Japan because of the way she moved her hands around when she spoke!) Anyway, it's great that you try to improve your videos by being conscious of things like ummming, but also don't stress about it because many of us viewers won't even notice and would do much worse if we tried to post our own videos Thanks Jo. I do appreciate reading people's thoughts and comments as it gives me an opportunity to identify something that I might not have been aware of and grow and improve. There are some things that irritate me too so I try to make sure that I don't do them in my own videos. And while some things I'm happy to improve on, there are others that I just am not as fussed about. Different strokes, you can't please everybody. This is the one: youtu.be/UWXorEmfmyg

I thought of something else that turned me off completely to someone quite prominent in the scrapbooking and card making industry. Recently I was watching a replay of a live video by Stephanie Barnard, who has been around in the crafting world for quite some time. Her tag line is "Hello, my friends." She was actually just sued by Sizzix and lost the suit. Anyway, in the live video, she was addressing an issue that her customers were having. Apparently, one of the items in her monthly kit was missing from some customers' kits. She told her viewers that she had looked through some kits, and the item was in all of them. Then she went on to say, "I don't know what to tell you. Maybe it's under something else, maybe it's stuck to something, or maybe you're just blind. I don't know."
WTH? What kind of way is that to talk to your customers? She looked like she had just woken up and was cranky and unpleasant in general. I stopped watching as soon as she said that. That is a sure-fire way to lose customers. I will never buy anything from her brand again. "Goodbye, my friend."

I don't mind a bit of gesturing, being a hand talker myself, nor does a bit of background noise bother me. My house is quite noisy, I am used to having to tune stuff out, and I understand not everyone may have a totally quiet place to film. What does annoy me is lots of chatter that has nothing to do with what is being shown in the video. A brief anecdote here and there while maybe you're doing some ink blending is ok, but I have clicked off some videos where the person spends five minutes at the start talking about how they recently moved, their dog ran away, etc. I just want the video to get to the point. I recently started watching a video about a particular layering stamp set, where the lady spent three minutes talking about how she liked to use the stamps, saying the same thing multiple times. I just wanted to see how it looked once stamped and possible ink combinations, so I found another video. Get to the point, don't repeat and I will watch.

It makes me ask if I will be treated in the same manner if I am missing something.

I'll never go back to watching interrupted ad filled Youtubes again. There is that plus you get to download the videos to make your own playlists, I do that a lot when I travel or I know I'm going to be somewhere were I can't stream easily. oh and then there are the YT series, I loved the Karate Kid reboot, still waiting on season 3. I can't do anything about the annoying flailing handers or the awful, awful nails on a chalkboard vocal fry vidoes but at least I don't have to sit through ads anymore. Best $10 spent, IMO.

I meant an independent platform JUST for creatives. Like patreon but a universal subscription. Creators would reach a wider audience and subscibers wouldn't have to pay each individual creator for access to their content. Spread the wealth, essentially. I don't think sending more money Google's way is the answer.
