I am so mad at myself... dropped metal pins into my Canon Pixma ip4500 (from 10 years ago?) printer and must not have found all of them and it now has a print head error. I took it apart and it looks like a teeny clear gasket, where the print head docks has a chunk missing. I went to look at new printers and researched them and Canon printers are not great any more and all the cheaper ones have front-loading mostly, so not good for card stock. Anyone have a new printer under $300 that they love for printing cardstock and decent photos and doesn't use a lot of ink? I've read that H-P printers suck ink like crazy. My old printer worked fabulously for all of my needs (rear loading of cardstock) and new printers seem like junk. Help with suggestions. My kids are working on their science fair projects so need something soon.

I think most printers will handle heavy paper, but you should run it thru as a single feed. I have an Epson Work-Force, they list $179, can find for -$100. I use the rear feed for touchy things like photo paper, large mailers, and folders.

don ..But I didn't have to do that on my old Canon... put a batch of about 30 sheets on rear and could handle the 110 lb georgia pacific cardstock... why oh why? I want the good old days... TFS

I had a Canon Pixma that I loved loved loved (after years of hating printers so much I wouldn’t buy one). When it died I got a new Pixma that is now outdated, but is still for sale through Amazon (link) I will be honest - don’t love it the way I did my old one. It’s a little finicky (although maybe it’s the driver rather than the printer). But it does handle paper well, can run 80 or 110lb Neenah through the rear feed tray, and doesn’t seem to suck ink the way that our old non-Canon printers did. And it’s well under your price limit. Good luck finding something you can love. I didn’t know that they were getting rid of the rear feed feature. I need that!

I took printer apart to try to revive it (Youtube help) and cleaned everything and letting it dry out. Maybe it will come back to life. Rear feed feature so great. I dont want to give it up yet. New isn't always better.

I have a front loading Canon pixma that I bought about four years ago and it prints on heavy cardstock and photo paper really well. I have zero complaints about it.

I just bought Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 and used the rear feed to print on GP 110; printer has a rear and front/bottom tray. It printed with no problems. The ink is waterproof and works great for Copic coloring.

Check out the Canon TS series. Those have rear loading trays. I am keeping my eye on those because when my old canon dies, I also want another one with rear loading and the TS series has it. I have a printer from the Canon TS series and it takes my My Color Cardstock Heavyweight (100 lb/270 gsm) cardstock, no issues whatsoever. However, I don't print photos with it and I always fold it back up after use so I never have several sheets of cardstock sitting in the tray or need to worry about metal pins. I hope you can find a way to save your old printer, samantha25.

I recently got a TS9120 after my pixma finally caved in. So far, reasonably happy w/the paper handling, ease of use. Can't say too much about ink usage yet as I haven't printed on it a ton.

Hope you get it sorted! I'm still using my 10+ year old Canon Pixma with rear tray which I love. Hope it will keep going for a few more years!

don do you have wide-format and how's the ink price? I do not have a wide format printer ... "yet"! I have a WF-4530, I got it on sale from Office Max for $89. Inks, a set of 4 are about $125 from Epson. I've seen refills at about $20 each. I assume you mean 110 lb cover weight (card stock) as opposed to text weight (paper). Some things to keep in mind; always fan any paper before putting it into the printer, make sure you have the proper print paper setting, clean the machine once in a while (lots of paper dust inside), and in my own personal experience, single feed gives a better print result.

Thank you for all of the responses... I'm looking at the TS series but am trying to revive my old printer. It's fun taking the printer apart..

Canon printers are not great any more and all the cheaper ones have front-loading mostly, so not good for card stock. I love my Canon printers! I have great luck with the ones I have purchased in the last couple years. I took printer apart to try to revive it (Youtube help) and cleaned everything and letting it dry out. Maybe it will come back to life. Rear feed feature so great. I don't want to give it up yet. New isn't always better. MY printhead died on my older wide format Canon Pixma.. I bought replacement heads (one used, one new) .. and I never did get it working again. I wished I had not spend the money trying to fix it. Check out the Canon TS series. I've heard good things about the TS 9521 Craft printer - it is the only printer out there that will print a true borderless 12x12 - if that is what you might want. Many printers will print 12x12 - but this is the only one that prints BORDERLESS 12x12 www.amazon.com/Canon-TS9521C-Wireless-Crafting-Printing/dp/B07G6BH2C7/ref=asc_df_B07G6BH2C7/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=242026608662&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9982672280391060308&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9018300&hvtargid=aud-801381245258:pla-552905024128&psc=1I have a Canon i8720. It won't print a true borderless 12x12 - but it does print 12x12 fine -and any border is not an issue for me. I can put a 12x12 print in a 12x12 frame and the white border does not show. The 12x12 works FANTASTIC for Silhouette Print & Cut (you do not want to set borderless for that anyway). www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HM0IV52/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1It's top feed. I have not had any issues with heavy cardstocks feeding through. I use some heavy papers too. High quality metallic photo paper. Watercolor paper, etc - heavy heavy stuff. Never had a feed issue with this printer. It will print up to 13x19. I use aftermarket ink - EZ INK .. and it is beyond wonderful for the price and quality. Really good. I've been using it a few years and no issues. The price of that ink will stop you in your tracks. 3 SETS of tanks for $15 - that's $1 per tank - and the quality is great. This will void any warranty on the printer - so I need to mention that. My warranty is long gone, so no issue for me - but this ink has performed wonderfully for me. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073BMRPCP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I traded out my HP for an Epson Tank printer. Haven’t printed much yet so I can’t say how much ink it eats. I’m happy I won’t have to search the entire city for a HP photo black when I need one.

I have a Canon TS8220 printer, which prints photos beautifully, and which has a rear tray. It was a relatively affordable printer. I found it at Best Buy during the summer.
I can print on 110 lb. card stock with no problem, but I do put it through using the rear tray.

I have a Canon i8720. It won't print a true borderless 12x12 - but it does print 12x12 fine -and any border is not an issue for me. On Canon's website it says:The PIXMA iP8720 allows you to print stunning borderless photos up to 13" x 19"! Is that not true? I was just getting ready to purchase this but I want to print borderless. It shows large pictures coming out without borders on their ad so I thought it would be perfect. Can anyone verify if it is able to print large borderless?

I can print borderless 13x19 with no trouble.
I can print any standard size (a size that is on the print menu) borderless. So 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 14x17, 13x19 - all of those print borderless with no issue.
I can NOT print a borderless 12x12 though. Any 12x12 has a very small border.
There is a Canon Craft printer that will print a borderless 12x12 if that is a size you absolutely need borderless.

I guess technically my printer is like that too. I can't print large format. But if I print a longer size it does have a border. Darn. Its not a must have. But would have been nice. I actually will probably not need 12x12, but would like 9x12 or 6x12 borderless. For print and cut it wouldn't matter. Also, how do you like it overall? Print quality?

Print quality is excellent. I buy aftermarket in (EZ Ink) off Amazon and it is dirt cheap with excellent quality. It's only like $1 per color tank - so that price is amazing.
If you want 9x12 or 6x12 borderless prints, you can do that, just on larger paper. You can't get that size of paper anyway, but you could several prints that size on a 13x19 paper and trim them down and have a true borderless print.
For Print & Cut (If you are using Silhouette) you never want to set it to borderless print anyway.

Yes, that would be an amazing price for ink!!
