Hawaii. I think that’s the only place I would be willing to go if I can’t be home at Christmas.

Pretty much any island in the Caribbean will be warm. Just realize that prices will be through the roof in either the Caribbean or Hawaii.

Are you looking for a beach vacation, or something else? Do you want to stay in the US, or willing to travel internationally?

If you want just a warm beach vacation I would do Hawaii - tickets are really expensive over Christmas though. If you want warm weather, historical ruins, architecture and amazing food could go to Mexico City.

We just vacationed on Maui for Christmas and New Years and it was magical! I’d vote Hawai’i for sure.

Definitely Hawaii. That's where I went in this past December and I didn't want to come home

Id do a cruise in the Caribbean for 10 days and visit 6-7 different ports but only unpack once. Id get to see different cultures, different islands, different people.

Last year we went to Davenport Florida for a week over Christmas. It was fabulous so close to everything, NASA, Disney, Coco Beach etc. The place we stayed had a great pool area and lovely condos> We flew pretty cheap on Allegiant Air.
If money is no object I would go for Hawaii

I second a cruise. Go southern Caribbean, the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao - all favorites of mine!). You get a taste of the islands and time to relax on board the ship on sea days. Prices are a bit higher at the holidays, but overall it's a good deal when you consider that all your meals (unless you go to a specialty restaurant) and entertainment is included. Adult beverages are extra, but often cheaper than what you get on some islands. Full disclosure: I'm addicted to cruising. I'm not sorry, and I'm not looking for a 12 step program either.
ETA: we took a family cruise over Christmas a few years ago. Loved it, ship was decorated, Santa came and handed out gifts for the younger kids. I would do it again in a heartbeat, if I could get all kids and their families to go. Grandkids keep them home for Christmas now, and I totally understand that)

I'd do a cruise and go to several places in the Caribbean.

Australia or New Zealand. Or, somewhere in South America.

We just did a Christmas cruise and loved it. It was our third Christmas cruise. That said, if you just want to sit on a beach, go to Hawaii or Florida and rent an apartment or get a hotel room right on the beach. It depends on what you are looking for in a warm place.

Not sure if you are looking for international or domestic travel. Arizona is warm in the winter (comparing it to Michigan) and has lots of lovely places to visit. Sedona, and then some of the southern towns. Flagstaff and some of the northern towns, will have some snow or cold temps.

We have gone to Maui the last two winters. It is glorious to feel the sun and perfect temperatures. Bonus that it is whale season and we saw a ton.

Where would I go? Quite possibly Greece but I'm in the UK and you haven't said whether you'll travel outside the USA.

If you want to park yourself at the beach and swim in the ocean, Hawaii would be my first choice and continuing further to Thailand is second.
If you just want it warm enough to not need a coat, southern California has a few options (Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, etc.).

It cracks me up how all the Californians say Hawaii. It’s such a California thing. We hop to Hawaii the way you East Coasters and Midwesterners hop to the Caribbean. Anyway, I was just going to say ... Hawaii.

Isla Mujeres, MX
We've spent 3 Christmases there so far, it's freaking awesome. We're from Michigan too. Can fly direct from either Detroit or Chicago in a pinch to Cancun, then ferry across to the island. Rent a house, it's the best, stay as close to North Beach as you can.
Christmas is the MOST expensive time of year to travel, we've had to finally give it up. Once the kids start getting married, the cost of the trip becomes unwieldy.

We don’t celebrate Xmas so we usually go away. When the kids were little we went to Maui. It was our fav Hawaiian destination. We’d get a condo on the water and just let the kids dictate our days. But we’d cook and have a car to go for meals / shopping / groceries. To get a hotel on Maui over Xmas is $$$ and to eat out every meal for 2 weeks is $$$ and not that good.
When the kids got older we stared doing all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean - Mexico. It was roughly the same price as Hawaii but no hassle with renting a car, no cooking, shopping or cleaning a condo kitchen. My DH prefers the ease of being at an all inclusive plus he loves the Caribbean ocean and sand. We just got back from cancun on Sunday.
We have done cruises in the Caribbean. They are fun too. Being on a ship for Xmas or New Years is very fun. I prefer the relaxation of a land vacation but if you want to see many islands / want a bit of a cultural change a cruise is a good way to go. My girls enjoyed touring islands through the morning and then hitting gorgeous beaches in the afternoons.
In my opinion, California isn’t guaranteed warm enough in December. Hawaii is always beautiful. Mexico is fun, relaxing and easy.
Enjoy making your choices.
