I'm going to Universal at the end of the week with my best friend and her family. I can't wait. I'm a big Harry Potter fan, I can't wait to see the Wizarding World and ride the train between the 2 parks. My "niece & nephew" are 12 & 10, I think we're all going to have a blast. Any tips, recommendations, etc would be appreciated. I've only been to Disney & Epcot, and that was many years ago, when I was a kid.

Wear sunglasses, because when you walk through the wall to get to Diagon Alley, you'll get teary-eyed.

Stay on property so you get early entry. If the kids want the Olivander wand experience, they need to hit that early, first thing ideally as it just gets busier as the day goes one. Have fun!

You have to have the multiple park pass to ride the train. Spend the extra money to get the good passes. After you have ridden the rides with your family, use the single rider line. You usually cut the wait in half or much less.
I went with a 19 year old for five days. We had a blast.

If you get motion sickness take something before you ride the one when you fly! I can’t remember the name now but it’s quite nauseating!

For the train ride, go from the Diagon Alley/London side to Hogsmeade, at least for the first time. And it is a different experience in each direction.

I love HP but will never go on this ride again, even with medicine. I barely survived. Took my DH 2hrs to recover.

I'm jealous! It's been years since I've been. I can't get DH to do a combo Disney/Universal trip. Last time we went, they were still working on the Kong ride.
Take time to notice the attention to detail. It can be quite immersive.

I love love love Universal! We were there again last month and had an amazing time. It was the first time that I had been to Diagon Alley, been to the other side numerous times. It was everything I wished for and more. Though we spent a stupid amount of time waiting around for that dragon lol Get ice cream at Florean Fortescues. SO good and they have amazing flavors. It is right across from Gringotts. If there is a line, it is worth waiting in it.

When outside Serius’ home, watch the windows. Have butter beer. We had a behind the scenes tour at Gringott’s—so cool. It’s a hike from parking to the gate, which was rough pushing dd in a wheelchair, so allow time.

I’m going to be words of reason - it’s fun and magical but don’t get carried away. The merchandizing is over the top. My kids were SO EXCITED and wanted the wand experience (we did the experience which was cute but really just a push to buy the wand) and to purchase the robes. Omg. How can they get away with those prices? We refused the wand purchase. You buy the wand that ‘chooses’ you. The one that chose dd was over $50. And the food experiences were so expensive for terrible quality - like butter beer. We bought the beer because I felt bad about the wands and robes. My girls took one sip and wouldn’t drink more because it was yucky. Enjoy the environment and the rides but keep your wallet in your purse. The flying ride can bother the stomach. If you’re sensitive go on an empty stomach. We entered early and went straight to the castle. We waited 5 min and rode the ride. Little dd wouldn’t go again so I waited with her while dh and older dd rode again. The wait was still 5-10 min. I figured one of them would come back and ride with me again. When they got off they both refused to ride again and said they’d had enough. I had the option to go alone but decided not to. Later the day the line was a 2 hr wait. But this was 2 years ago so maybe the line has subsided. The ride was something special ETA - I just want to add that we did do the wand experience and dd was picked for the wand. She enjoyed that and was upset we didn’t buy the wand. In the end she was glad she didn’t get the wand. When it’s busy you wait in line to ‘use’ your wand at the special locations. The line was at least 10-15 people deep, so you watched others get the secret surprise after using their wand and saw the secret surprise 10-15 times before you got up there to do it. It seemed less exciting that way. If there was no line and everything was a surprise perhaps that is more exciting.

Absolutely get a wand!
They’re interactive and when you purchase one you get a map of all the places in the park that are magic. Plus there are other, secret ones that aren’t on the map for you to discover.
Well worth the $50 to have such a cool experience in the park.

Absolutely get the wand - we didn't do the experience - just let my grandson choose. We waited 3 hours for the new Hagrid ride - totally worth it!!

Get their version of Fastpass. I think we rode MIB 4 times in a row because of how fast we could get through the line. If you get motion sickness bad, you can still go through Gringotts and Hogwarts and see the neat buildings. When you get toward the boarding the ride area, there are people there to let know you are not riding (the ride transfer place) and they will direct you to the exit. My husband gets motion sickness and he really wanted to ride the Harry Potter adventure (Hogwarts) but after riding it myself several times over a couple of days I told him it was not advisable. Ride the Hippograff ride, it is fun. Hagrid's Motor Bike adventure ride is a 3 hour wait at opening when we went lol! Hopefully it won't be like that for you as I didn't get to ride it Ride the Express both ways as it is different each way-but make sure you have the park hopper ticket. Some of the rides have lockers you HAVE to store your stuff while you ride the ride. Use them. If you get one of those refillable drinks make sure it is empty before putting it in the locker, trust me on this! The refillable drink cup was handy for our several day stay. We are a family of 4 and just purchased 2 cups and we all shared and took turns deciding. There are donuts everywhere it seems lol! Jimmy Fallon ride was fun-take time to do that. I did eventually have to take a break from riding another "screen" ride as I called them as there are so many of them. I loved The Mummy ride-good if you like roller coaster type rides. My daughter loves Dr. Seuss so we spent a lot of time in that land. The A-Z ride has two different tracks and we rode it twice to see the ride both ways. It is elevated above the park and a neat view. Have fun!

First of all, go here if you haven't: www.disboards.com/forums/universal-studios-islands-of-adventure-forums.30/There are lots of questions answered and good information. We are going soon, too, and are very excited. We went back in 2017 and feel more prepared to take on 3 days at the park now that the kids are a little older. We did the wand ceremony and they usually try to choose kids who are closer to starting Hogwarts age, so be prepared. That does not mean you can't get your own wand that is not a character specific wand though. I chose my own and I still love it. My husband made us a wand holder at home and it sits on our mantle. They also will "repair" your wand for free if you do go back and it's not working, so I feel it's worth the investment. We only did a few spells around the park, but hope to do way more this time. If you're staying at one of the preferred hotels, you'll have more flexibility with your touring simply because the Express Passes are part of your hotel price, but if not, you might want to have a general idea of what you want to accomplish. We did both parks in one day on our last visit and felt like we got through everything wanted to, but obviously more time means more stuff to do/see. I also got the Univeral Photo Pass on a special, since their photo system is a little stingier than DW. It doesn't look like they have a special atm, but you could at least check the prices now: presale.amazingpictures.com/UniversalFlorida.aspxI don't imagine you'll need to carry much in the parks, but be aware you will have to utilize the lockers for certain rides, unless you don't have a bag. Some rides, like Hulk require you not have anything on you at all. Oh, and the train is a different experience both ways, so try to do it both ways! Have an amazing time!

Oh! Yes! If you can swing it, get a wand! I went to a place in Diagon Alley, on the left side when you first walk in down a bit. I chose my own wand. We all had so much fun with it!
Even my 2 year old was using it. Once he actually got the "spell" to work. He was tickled pink lol Wish I could share the video of him, it was so cute seeing him swishing it around. He needs to work on his flick 😉
Yes, it is pricey. But it is all worth it to us. We don't go crazy, but frozen butterbeer is a must (has to be frozen, the others aren't as good in our opinion). Last time i did buy a sweatshirt. It was about $55 I think. I have a hard time purchasing things that will never be used again, like a cloak. The wand is a different story though lol DH just spent $200 the day before buying a lightsaber at Hollywood Studios so I didn't feel bad lol

Good advice above, from all. In addition to those...look for Kreacher in the windows of Grimmauld Place. Go in the phone booth and dial M-A-G-I-C in London. Listen for Moaning Myrtle in the women's restroom in Hogsmeade next to the pub. And really, just look and listen and soak it in. It is so true to the movies and books, it is just magical. I was 45 years old when I went and I felt like a little kid. It's one of my favorite vacations ever. Universal really paid attention to the details.

I'd also say at 10 and 12 - if they have them, tell your niece and nephew to bring their robes. Lots of kids will be wearing them in the park and "cast members" will interact with them a lot more. They're also much more likely to be picked for the wand experience if they're wearing robes.

Where are you staying? For me, it works to get into the HP lands as early as possible (early entry helps), and I typically stay until those areas start getting really busy. Then I venture out into the stores and other areas of the parks and come back to the HP areas at night.
For shopping, definitely plan on some souvenirs, but the best strategy we have found is to (1) set a budget and (2) write down everything we want - except interactive wands; the kids need those early - and then go back at the end of the last day once we've narrowed down the list.

Harry Potter World is simply ... stunning. We didn't get a wand -- but watched many others attempt the spells, and watched the results when a cast member finally helped! (Frankly, I can see a TON of frustration for a little person in that!) We did the rides - I am generously sized and they were a squeeze - but done. But -- just looking and seeing - watching the pop up shows -- stunning! We had a "butter beer" -- once will forever be enough on that. We ate at the 3 Broomsticks -- expensive but acceptable. But just walking and see the detail - the care in the translation ... and I didn't even know about Moaning Myrtle or the phone booth! Do NOT miss Nocturn Alley. Check out the stores (we didn't buy anything) If your group doesn't have "robes" -- then do a sort of "Disney-bound" thing rather than a straight up purchase of a robe. We saw LOTS of teens -- plaid skirts, "house color" neckties, white blouse or house color scarf -- that looked TOTALLY Harry Potter World.

I don't remember where we're staying. My friend booked the hotel. We had looked at quite a few, but I don't remember which one she ended up booking. We ended up buying annual passes because they're not that much more than the 4 day park to park tickets. Flights to Orlando are cheap, and we'd get discounts on hotels. My daughter really wants to go, and she will be 21 this summer, so my friend and I might go again with our kids in the fall. No way are we going in the summer with the crowds and the heat/humidity.

When it comes to trips, I'm kind of type A about everything.
My daughter won't ride roller coasters. Since some of them you get in a line and can't really see the ride (if it's inside) I researched rides to know in advance if she wanted to ride it. Then I made a list of all of those rides. (Some I cut for time) I knew in advance the menus of the restaurants because she won't eat certain things and I wanted to make sure we'd all have something we liked to eat. I downloaded the Universal app because I suck at navigation and can't read a paper map apparently. It told us wait times for rides too, so that was helpful. No need walking all the way over to ___ ride if the wait was 2 hrs.
I think we bought the refillable cup.
Have fun

Have fun! I prefer the frozen butterbeer over the regular. Also the real beer! Mail yourself a postcard from the Owl Post. I am not so big on the rides, but just love the atmosphere and scenery.
Also the Jimmy Fallon ride/experience was cool.
