I have a corner of my living room that is screaming for an indoor tree. I have a problem with keeping plants alive though.
Is there an easy to care for tree that you would recommend? This corner is right next to a southwest facing window, but we do have a tree outside that keeps the corner shaded for much of the day.
Alternative question - I know that it's been considered tacky to use silk or other artificial plants/trees, but I don't know if that's still the case. I'm really hesitant to throw money away on a live tree that I will possibly kill, so I'm considering artificial. Does anyone here have an artificial tree? Any good sources you would recommend?

I do not have a green thumb at all, but I managed to keep a ficus tree alive and looking good for over 20 years - it finally got too big and I had to get rid of it.

I have a Ficus tree in my bedroom, reaches the ceiling. Kept the stem clear of lower branches and it looks more tree like and less like a bush. My tree was bought in 1990 and I just chuck some water on it sometimes. It is very forgiving. Feeling guilty of ill treating it now.

Wow, you've both kept your ficus trees alive a long time! Sounds like a tree I should try!

I don’t care if fake plants are tacky, or whatever. I like the look of plants, to add color and softness to a space, and they are easier to care for than real.

We had a ficus tree in our bedroom for years! When we moved to So Cal 25 years ago, we planted it in our front yard. It's taller than our roof now. Super easy to take care of.

Another fan of silk plants. They look a lot better than dead/dying ones. I've never had anyone examine them or ask if they are real.
(Except my 7 yo grandson..he advised me to remove one part of an arrangement that "looks fake". Another one, about the same age, advised me once that my kitchen wallpaper needed "to go")
