I recently got some AirPods. They are 2nd generation with a wireless charging case. I’ve also recently gotten an Apple Watch, (5th generation, and they are enabled for cellular). I’m trying to turn over a new leaf with daily walks, and want to listen to my Spotify play lists via my watch as I walk. However, by the time I get to the end of my sidewalk, the signal cuts out and the AirPods go silent, despite being charged. If I carry my phone, Spotify works just fine. My phone has the latest update installed.
What am I missing? Should I be able to use the pods with my watch? If so, I’m wondering what step I missed.
Can anyone help a technology-challenged person out, please?Thank you!

You probably just need to "connect" them to your watch

Yep, sounds like they’re connected to your phone instead of your watch.
I’m not sure if you can connect them to your watch actually since I don’t have one.

Do you have the Spotify app installed on your watch?

You can connect them to your Watch for sure. What I don’t know for sure is if there’s a Spotify app for the Watch (I use Apple Music).
I agree with everyone that your AirPods are staying connected to your phone. They’re *supposed* to switch over automatically but IME it doesn’t always work as flawlessly as it should.

I *think* you have to somehow convert the Spotify songs to MP3 then transfer them to your watch. My watch doesn't have cellular so I always take my phone on walks if I want to track my route or listen to music.

Sorry, I posted my question then headed out the door. Thanks for all your thoughts. I’ve been sitting here messing around. When I check Bluetooth on the watch, it shows the AirPods as connected. I see the Spotify icon on the watch. When I open it, I see my libraries. Yet when I click play, nothing happens. It did occur to me that there’s an Apple store not far from where I’m staying at the moment. Perhaps I’ll cruise by and ask the experts. This really has me vexed. .

Even though your watch has cellular, you cannot stream Spotify on your Apple Watch without your iPhone. The app on the watch just lets you control what is happening on the app on your phone.
Spotify does not operate as a standalone app on the Apple Watch. You must always have your phone to stream your Spotify.
So, nothing wrong with your AirPods, you are just trying to do something that Spotify won’t do - play on your watch without your phone.

But thanks for answering my question so I can stop trying to figure it out.

I'm not a lot of help but I have and Android phone, Samsung Active watch and Anker Soundcore pods. I have the Spotify app on my watch and can listen to it on my pods. Also works when I'm at the gym.
Ohhhhhh a lightbulb may have just popped on. It may be due to the watch being connected to WiFi. Shoot, I thought I was helping.
Actually just looked it up, with Spotify premium you can listen with out the phone nearby. Which I have. But I think it is only with the Samsung.
