Thanks for setting this up! I've been working on learning to crochet granny squares for a year. It took me one year to get through the first ball of rainbow mandala yarn. I got through the 2nd ball in one month this January! So now I want to get some dark colored yarn and join the squares into a blanket. I learned the technique from YouTube and now I just need the supplies and I will start doing that little by little while I watch TV in the evenings. Here are my stacks of squares http://instagram.com/p/B79ydBQA4JJ The other thing I'm learning is Procreate (app) digital drawing on the iPad. I inherited one last Thanksgiving and finally got an Apple Pencil last month, so the other night I watched a YT video (what did we do before YT?!) to get beyond the most basic functions. I did some drawing using the sketches I did for the 100 day project last year as a starting point. I'll share what I've been working on soon. It's really fun. Especially because it records a process video that you can share!

Wow! Isn't it fun to see your learning and time literally pile up pretty things? Congrats on the squares. Can't wait to see the blanket!

I’m learning how to join my crocheted granny squares together! I did a border on the first one and did a “crochet as you go” method to join the second one to it. It looks like I did it right! I’ll double-check in the morning because it’s hard to see the detail of the black stitches in our dark living room, but then I think I’ll got the hang of it. I followed along with a Bella Coco YT video tonight. I like how most of the granny square process is just counting to 3. I can do that while I watch TV, no problem

I've been working on it off and on since Christmas. I bought the yarn with some Christmas money. Thanks for the compliment.

And I would recommend doing a row at a time. All the way across. Then do your lengths.

I have nothing of crafty value to add to this thread, but I have to say...... holy crap jeremysgirl , you and your mum look so alike!! When I first saw the photo, for one split second I thought "Oh, JG's had her hair coloured." Then in the next split second I thought "Hmmm she looks a bit older than the last photo I saw of her" then the next split second I was like "You idiot, that's her mum!"

I bet the kiddos had fun decorating and eating those cookies grammadee - <3 Wow, that's a lot of work gramma! Looks great. Progress on my granny squares - the small stack of squares is now blanket shaped! I added a border around each one and joined them together in one process. There's a crocheter on YT who shows the method very clearly so I just follow along. I'm going to go back around to add some edging around the whole blanket to make the edges nicer and then it will be done. A few more nights of TV, hopefully done by the end of the month. I just ordered more yarn for the rainbow squares - a silver color I haven't seen in person, so fingers crossed! http://instagram.com/p/B840JLGAHBJ

Hey ladies, I am late to jumping in this post but glad to see all the creativity here. I started working on a new crocheting project. I saw this lady on YouTube making a winter hat and thought I would give it a try. I may not finish till next month but I will post. It is fun learning something new.: :

joblackford - Yes this hat project is easy. It is just taking a little longer than I thought to make it. I think if I got larger yarn, I would of whipped through it. The tutorial is really good and the young lady teaching does a good job slowly showing what she is doing. Her name is Melanie Ham and she has lots of crochet and sewing videos. Here is the link Crochet Hat

YT suggested her beanie video to me too, so I might check that out once I’ve made the basic hat. Once I’m done with my current projects I’ll get some yarn and get started. It might be a good travel project for me next month.

It's looking beautiful kellyr21 ! I love the color and it looks like a soft yarn. I just ordered some zz twist yarn - I found out that z twist yarn can be better for crochet because it's plyed the opposite way and so can un-ply itself less as you work, so I might try that for the hat if I have enough. I like measuring rather than counting too.

I ran across this article about "Temperature Blankets" in Better Homes & Gardens Online Magazine. You crochet according to the weekly or daily weather. Use diffrent colors for different temps. Then, at the end of the year, you have got a special blanket. Have you heard of it??? So neat!!![/p] Here is the link. Link Here

joblackford- Thanks! I love the color and the yarn is very soft. I got it from Amazon. That zz yarn sounds good. I will have to keep an eye out for it. QUESTION: I was measuring my work to see if I am close to the end. LOL! According to her measuring chart I am doing the 23 inch circumference. I thought I heard on the video both the horizontal and vertical should be same. But her chart says 8.5 inches for hat length. So I am lost! Maybe it is 8.2 x 2? 16 ish? I was never an A student in math. LOL!

I was never an A student in math. LOL! The chart on her blog post doesn’t seem very helpful because she says it’s for her fitted beanies, but this isn’t a fitted beanie! The height of the hat was determined by your cast on, and it’s taller and slouchier than the beanie style. I fast forwarded the video a bit and the original cast on was 15” to give you a turned up band and a slouchy height. Then it just needs to fit comfortably around your head, right? Looks like it should be 21” or up to 23”. She didn’t specify that measurement in the video because she said it depended on what size you were making. So if you’ve crocheted a 15x21” rectangle (or so) you’re almost done!

Then, at the end of the year, you have got a special blanket. Have you heard of it??? So neat!!! yes, it’s so cool! I follow a lady on Instagram who makes temperature blankets and weather blankets. She determines which color represents each thing and then makes granny squares based on that. So one she’s doing has the weather checked at 3 times each day to determine the 3 rounds - red is the color of her umbrella so she uses red for rain (dark red for heavy rain, light red for light!) and she has sun colors and cloud colors and blue sky too. She did a year long temperature blanket I think, and she did one to represent the political turmoil of Brexit (I never saw how she coded that - but it got pretty crazy, just like the politics!) One of my friends told me about a sky blanket, choosing the next row of color based on the sky color, but here we would have a 50 shades of grey blanket unless we made it in July and August. It’s a cool idea though. You could do a mood blanket too. Pick some colors and decide what mood each represented...

I will have to look for some of the blankets over there. Also, thanks for the help with my hat. I am 23x11 inches so far. I will keep going and hopefully finish soon. It's been fun making it but I am ready to be done now. It been so warm here I may have to wait til later in the year to wear it. LOL!
