I was in HI, but on Oahu (Hilton Hawaiian Village). It was the same Japanese couple who were also in Maui They came to our resort after. They left Oahu on 2/7 and we arrived on 2/13.

And if you’re the current potus, you tell your staff not to talk about it at all, cut the CDC funding, and sweep it under the rug (or invest in the stock market...) I’m glad that US health care providers are taking this seriously—if anything other than to prevent economic collapse here like parts of China are experiencing with businesses closing down.

If my company is preparing for anything, they haven't announced it. I would be surprised if they aren't, they have a contingency plan for everything from fire to tornado, to terrorist attack, disgruntled employee, etc. The majority of us can work from home when/if needed so the company won't come to a halt at least.
My MIL was just talking this weekend about buy a large chest freezer for their basement and stocking up, just in case...

DH is freaked out we won't have electricity and water Seriously why would the coronavirus spreading cause no electricity or water? I don't know. I think he might have been thinking we needed a natural disaster survival kit. I kept having to say "but if we need ___ (salt for example) it's in the kitchen cupboard!" Maybe he's confusing quarantine with the zombie apocalypse...

DH is freaked out we won't have electricity and water Seriously why would the coronavirus spreading cause no electricity or water? note, I'm not a Doomsday person, but in theory, if many people are sick or in quarantine, people might not be available to fix/maintain things like power lines, water mains, water treatment, etc. Given that Wuhan has not experienced that, I don't think it will get that bad. But we also have a very different system of utilities than China, so who knows.

Not that I know of, but we are very tight on anything that is out there. I work for a prison in the medical area. I have not heard anything on my level. We pretty much lock down the facility if there is even one confirmed case of the flu, which just happened. There is a lot that takes place. I am sure somewhere in upper management the coronavirus has been discussed.

Definitely not panicking here. But I teach at an international school in the US with a large Chinese student population. Houston itself has a LOT of residents with family ties to China. I'm sure it will end up here eventually. Still not panicking.
My larger concern (selfish, I know) is that some sort of nationwide travel ban might prevent us from traveling to Peru next month. I'm really looking forward to that.

Wait, why won't there be electricity? That's what I was wondering? Back to reading.

My company has suspended travel to the impacted areas. We get daily updates. Today's update: Our company just restricted travel to Italy and South Korea. We already have restrictions on traveling to: China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Any one traveling from a "restricted" region now has to work from home, symptom free, for 14 calendar days following your return.
In the past, when the flu was particularly bad, my company handed out Tamiflu. You had to have a 5 minute conference with a doctor and then they handed it over. This happened a number of years ago.

I work in an industry where we are exposed to viruses (mostly animal and not zoonotic)daily, and I specifically grow the viruses. Everyone here is well versed in measures taken to avoid contracting illnesses, so I don't think they are planning for anything.

Our company sources raw materials and ingredients from ALL over the world, so I don't think it will affect us, but the fact that a lot of generic Rx drugs are made by overseas companies? THAT will probably end up being an issue for people here in the United States. As well as economic ripples worldwide from tourism and travel #s dropping. (and boo-frickin'-hoo to DT if he wants to keep this quiet SOLELY to help his re-election efforts!! It's called NEWS, Donald!! You can't totally suppress it, no matter how hard you might want to try.)

I'm not worried about death, I'm worried about being trapped in the house for an unspecified number of days/weeks...

Yes, I agree with that. I do think that people are getting super hyped up over something that's not a super big deal.

I think that whether you are a government, a business, or a family, being prepared is never a bad thing. Best case scenario, you never need the supplies, etc you prepared. Worst case scenario, you do need them, and you didn't prepare.

You know I loathe the man with every ounce of loathing I have in me - but I do think there is economic value in keeping the nation calm. Sometimes the news cycles create the hype and fear, and so keeping a rather calm attitude about it can only help. (I hope that makes sense!) Granted, he probably just doesn't want to hear about it because it bores him, but there can be good side effects of that, I suppose. I really don't think this is something we should be panicking about. Yes, we should stay informed and alert, and I wouldn't be thrilled to find out my coworker had it - but I'm in the camp that says at this point, flu is more of a health risk and more likely to infect me and mine.

We have a 3+1+1 arrangement with a Chinese university. Their students take the first 3 years of their undergrad Finance course at the Chinese university, taught by Chinese professors and a few of our visiting professors. Then they take the last year of undergrad courses here, and they finish up with our 1-year masters program in Finance.
The program is set up for them to have the summer off so they can go home to visit. While summer seems like a long way off, many of the students are concerned that if they leave, they won’t be able to return. We are considering offering some of the graduate courses as optional over the summer so they can stay here on their student visas. It may not be necessary, but we want to be prepared. We have a couple of instructors who are willing to teach this summer if we need them.

Seriously why would the coronavirus spreading cause no electricity or water? If there are too many sick people to run the power plants and treatment facilities. I doubt that's going to happen, but that would be why. We are also entering storm season soon. It can take several days to get power up and running after a bad storm or series of storms, and if the power companies are short-staffed due to illness, that could cause even longer periods of time without power.

I am not overly concerned at all. But guessing the president has no clues and says too many things too often! This was eight after Hogan Gidley denied even an ask for $1 billion......... * The Trump administration announced Monday night that it will ask Congress for "at least $2.5 billion" in additional funding to fight the coronavirus. The funding request will include at least $1 billion for vaccine development, an official said. The request will be for one lump sum to allow the Department of Health and Human Services "maximum flexibility" the official added. ** thehill.com/policy/healthcare/484441-white-house-asking-congress-for-25-billion-to-fight-coronavirusMy daughter's university is working on a vaccine for coronavirus. I sure hope they are successful! They discovered the polio vaccine, and I hope they can be successful with this vaccine as well.

DH works in healthcare (but isn't a doctor), they have planned what will happen with his job including working from home for weeks. We personally ordered an emergency food kit from Costco and stocked up on some other things at whatever Cash n Carry (restaurant supply store) is now called... I still need to add a few things (toilet paper!) because there are six of us in our house... It was sort of a weird shopping trip. DH is freaked out we won't have electricity and water and I was going for we'll just be stuck in the house and have plenty of food in the freezer...but a little chocolate might keep us from killing each other! Have I missed something along the way? I mean, I haven't listened to much news in the past few days... are we preparing for the apocalypse? Honestly, saying we might not have electricity and water sounds like fear mongering at its best. wow

One of my kids just had a school trip to Italy canceled. Tears all around. I wasn't worried about the students getting sick, but I was a little afraid they'd get stuck if new restrictions (on the part of either government) went into effect while they were away. I'm more sorry than relieved, though.

I admit to being checked out on the news lately, but I really haven’t heard any panic about this or the idea we should be preparing in any news I have seen or IRL.

I think that the CDC has caused way more panic the necessary. Virtual schools? Really? I work for a school and I promise you we won’t be setting up virtual schools for kids who don’t even have internet. Stay in your lane please. CDC.
It’s one thing to be prepared. It’s another thing to cause unnecessary panic.

Actually, though the number of cases is much smaller for coronavirus, the death rate is higher than for the flu. The flu is a known menace but the virus is a wild card. I am not seriously concerned for me and my family despite that. But hey, let the hoarding begin.
