Thank you! I had no idea. Bookmarked. I don't bake much anymore, but just in case.

Well, that's definitely a fair reason to want the cake sizes to stay the same, especially if you're willing to pay the higher cost. I just don't think companies are playing games for the sake of messing with people; I think their estimation is that most people aren't willing to pay higher prices. I do think it's somewhat of a game to mess with people. They fill cans of green beans with twice as much water as they used to. They put huge indents on the bottoms of jars and cans so there's less product. They introduce things as new and improved with new packaging hoping consumers won't notice the diminishing amounts. Obviously, they'd rather re-package than raise prices. Cereal boxes are so skinny some can barely stand. I doubt I'm the only consumer who'd rather pay more than have to be constantly surprised with smaller amounts. Sent from my iPhone And add to that the freakin' shrinking toilet paper rolls that are getting so narrow that they no longer fit some holders that just fit inside the rolls with no rod. I always feel like the companies think their consumers are too stupid to figure out that they are giving us less and charging the same. Ice cream cartons was one of the first times I remember seeing this happen. Changing cake mix sizes seems extra ridiculous to me - they are used in RECIPES WITH MEASUREMENTS for goodness sakes! It really does have an impact. Ok. Stepping off my box and rant over. Sorry but this has been bugging me for a long time.

Sent from my iPhone I would pay more too, at least for some things - but I doubt we are in the majority! Just look at the amount of people looking to reduce grocery bills, both sides of 'the pond', by shopping at Aldi etc. If every manufacturer kept the quantity of every item the same and charged a higher price the impact on weekly/monthly food bills would be enormous!!

I had no idea they were smaller now. How does that work out in terms of cake pans? Do they tell you to use smaller ones or do you wind up with really low cakes? Really low cakes. We noticed it a couple of years ago and at first thought we'd forgotten an egg or the mix was low on baking powder. But over time, we noted that while the box is the same size, the volume weight was smaller.

Keeping the price the same for a smaller product does not save the consumer anything! You end up spending more anyway, to get the same amount of product. You just "think" the price hasn't gone up... I hate this with things like cake mix, where it can be very important to a recipe.

Are we then supposed to find smaller cake pans? 13x9 becomes 11x7.5? It's absurd.

This is my favorite from scratch recipe. Generally I have everything on hand, you don't even need eggs do you can feed this to vegans and its moist and delicious. I think I'll stop bothering to buy chocolate cake mix I just have to find a white cake like this www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/homemade-chocolate-cake
