I've been purging and donating 17 years of accumulated stuff to move to a new place. My emotions have been all over the place, getting rid of the twins' toys and their early writings/art, my scrapbooking supplies etc. Cried every time I dropped off a load to the ARC. I've been looking into trying to sell some things that are of decent value. It seems easy enough to list the items on these sites but I'm unsure of how to accept payment. Anyone have advice?

I have purchased a few things. I always pay cash and we meet in person or do a porch pick up (they leave the item on the porch and I slip the money under the mat).

Most people pay cash. I had someone pay me. On PayPal when they couldn't come right away but wanted to be first in line to purchase.

Marketplace and OfferUp are 2 I use when I am buying or selling locally. Porch pickup because people flake when you go to the trouble of meeting them somewhere.

I sell regularly and occasionally buy on FB marketplace. I make people come to my house to pick up anything they want to buy. I know, I know...safety. We live in a gated community and it's actually a manned gate so anyone coming in has to be put on visitor list and gate people check their IDs so if anyone comes to buy a pair of handmade earrings or a bookshelf with the intent to bump me off or kidnap me, the case will be solved quickly. I've gone to pick things up at people's homes but it's always somewhere close that isn't sketchy and I only will do it in the daytime. I'm not selling or buying high dollar things so I would be a poor candidate for robbery. Could something still happen to me? Sure...but I figure I am in more physical danger just driving around in my car. I might totally get slammed for this but NextDoor is generally a very different age demographic from fb, offerup, letgo, etc. Things move VERY slowly there and there isn't much activity except things like does anyone know why there is a helo flying around over this area, complaints about people driving too fast or what business is moving into the space next to the ____ Publix store. Maybe it's just my area. Probably not though since there are social media accounts an groups for "best of nextdoor" and they are hilarious. mashable.com/2018/06/02/best-of-nextdoor-neighborhood-drama/

I buy from Marketplace quite often, always cash. Some of the local FB groups do VENMO more. Never seen much sell on NextDoor.

Our Nextdoor group always has a lot of stuff for sale or free posted, not sure how much of it actually sells though. I’d be a little less leery of posting something there because our group does vet the people who join so I know they’re people who actually live in my area.

I buy and sell on FB all the time. Selling isn’t popular in our neighborhood’s next door.
I’ve only ever done cash.

I’ve sold quite a bit with FB Marketplace. Sometimes I’ll cross post with other sites and will say that in the ad. But I’ve had the best luck with FB. I always end my ads with something along the lines of “no holds—the first person to come gets the item. Cash only and the price is firm.” If the item was large, I would say that it was heavy and that they needed to bring someone to help move the item or that my DH would help move the item into the car. I always met the person at Target or a nearby shopping center that was well lit. Our police station also has a spot for these transactions.

I just sold something on FB, net at a Starbucks and buyer paid cash. It was super easy and a smooth transaction.

My husband sells a lot on Offer Up, LetGo, and Reddit, I believe. But it’s mostly computer parts or builds.
He often will meet at a Walgreens parking lot — rarely is it at our house. It cracks me up because sometimes it looks like they’re doing a drug deal. One time, someone handed him a huge wad of cash in a zip top bag 😂

I sold our ottoman on Marketplace. Met the people at the Grocery Store parking lot. I noticed our local fire station has a sign by their parking lot that says something about it being a safe exchange location too.

Especially the "why is the helicopter circling our neighborhood" one. The MOST popular threads are the ones about the high water bills. To answer to OP's question: I have tried to sell on Next Door but got poor responses, so no advice since whatever way I did it apparently did not work, lol. I have made purchases through both NextDoor and Facebook Marketplace though.

We use our postal code at the local grocery store (people will show up without telling you they are coming) as our address. If someone is coming and we don’t want them at the door we will meet them at the grocery store (giving them a 10 minute window). You could meet at the local Police Station. I accept only cash and I have change on hand. dh accepts cash and e-transfer. Do you have to pay a transfer fee with Paypal? We buy/sell on Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji (like Craigslist) and Varage Sale. We met one lady in a parking lot and she had many people picking up items. Some people have the bin system. They have a bin on the porch or in their yard with your item in it. You leave cash in a small container in the bin. We often text as soon as we have picked up the item. We even sold 2 items on Christmas Day last year.

I haven't done Marketplace yet.. but there are a few garage sale sites on FB for my town that I have used.. and sometimes I meet if the item is small enough. If it is a larger item they come to the house. I will meet them in the garage and usually DH is there as well. Lots of neighbors so it is considerably safe.

So that didn't help either! lol

I dislike market place so much. I intentionally belong to 3 buy/trade/sell fb groups and that's it. I get an alert for a posting in one of those groups and when I click on that notification it takes me to market place. I can't that. I have googled everything to not have to default to that page when buying/selling.

I've given things away and purchased things through ND (ours is quite active in sales) and have sold on CL. I've tried purchasing/inquiring about things on Market Place, but either they've already sold and the person didn't update the listing or they never respond. I've pretty much given up on MP and prefer CL or ND.

I have sold on FB Marketplace.
Cash only. Meet in public location.
It is a real pain, however, as people:
1. Want to dicker down to free, if possible. They will often meet you and then offer a lower price figuring you will take it just to get it over with.
2. Will not show up.
3. Want you to deliver it to THEIR home, even if it is a long way away. Basically, people act like they are doing you a favor by accepting your stuff.

I have sold on Marketplace & Craigslist. I have to wade through a lot of scammers on CL, but have made a couple of good sales in the last few weeks on CL.
If you are using electronic payments (I accept Venmo and have used Zelle), be sure to login to the app and check for the payment - don't trust a text message "receipt" - I've seen people lose out on $$$ because they didn't verify.
My DH claims that my Marketplace postings sell better - he's stopped using his profile for sales and uses mine instead. He says I look friendlier. We have a minimum price - if it's not at least a certain amount it's not worth the time to post, complete the transaction and delete. If it doesn't meet that price, then we just donate it.
We don't do any meet ups at our house. If it's my mattress gig, we sell at my storage unit. If it's household/other stuff, we meet at the grocery store or another nearby location. We've had our share of no-shows, but we try to eliminate by sending a verification 5-10 minutes before our scheduled meet up. No response, we don't leave the house unless they verify. Suprisingly the no-shows are usually for the lower dollar items.
