Let me explain. If we would take more on our plate than we could eat, my mother would say "Looks like your eyes were bigger than your stomach."
I scrap alot. For this excercise, let's say that my scrapbooks are my stomach. Those supplies have been used properly and are digesting.
But what is left over is the stuff I have purchased that I have not yet used. What I put on my plate, but can't seem to eat...
I buy alot of scrappy stuff. Most of it is in themes I use: little boys--indoors and outdoors--, sports, school, farm, masculine, family, summer, fall, winter, holidays,...
And in the past I bought alot of things to scrap what I was scrapping then: little girls, babies, weddings,...
The problem is that when I am "into" a topic, I seem to want to collect every possible way to scrap it. And even after opportunities to scrap that topic (like camping, for example) deminish, I still love and purchase supplies for it. That system matches my scrapping style: I like to keep options open right to the very end of the scrapping process. So the more options I have at the beginning, the better I feel, and the more the creative juices flow.
Just rambling here, but I have been cleaning/organizing in my scraproom this morning, and the pile of stuff that needs to be stored away looks bigger than the spaces I have to store those supplies. And I have a LOT of storage space...
I know I have seen advice to "purge what you don't love or don't use". But I love it all; can see myself using it all if time and mojo go on forever... I have donated boxes of supplies to elementary schools and the brain injury society in the past, but not ready right now to get into that mode yet. Quite willing to share my supplies with anyone who comes here to scrap, but that only happens a few times a year.
Just wondering if there are others out there like me?

I'm the same. I over buy for the theme.
I have wedding scrapbook stuff left from when I made my wedding album almost 20 years ago.
I have so much baby girl and toddler scrapbook stuff because I think it's so cute and I do have some pictures left to scrap of my daughter when she was young (she is soon going to be a teen!).
My parents have a cottage and whenever I see something related to the lake I usually buy it. We only go to the cottage a few times a year, I really don't need that much "lake" scrapbooking stuff yet I still buy it.
Anyway... I am the type who has a hard time purging, I look at my stash and I can remember where I bought it, a lot of it was when we had 4 local scrapbook stores (what an abundance of riches that was, now they are all gone).

This is TOTALLY how I feel. I *used* to be able to pop into any old scrapbook store and just get what I need. When they started closing, I started collecting. I want to make sure I have stuff on theme when I need it, and I don't want to drive an hour. However, I have been on a real buying freeze this year, with a couple exceptions. (On Stage by Kaisercraft anyone...) But I know what you mean about "eyes too big" because I have more Christmas stuff than I know what to do with, I could scrap Christmas from now till 2050 with all of it.  |

The problem is that when I am "into" a topic, I seem to want to collect every possible way to scrap it. And even after opportunities to scrap that topic (like camping, for example) deminish, I still love and purchase supplies for it. I have Iris Cases for the bigger topics. Once those are full, I can't buy anymore. I don't do a lot of camping, BUT I generally like the colors in those lines. So, take a look at the B sides and see if you can use them for those boy pages.
I'm probably not helping if you are wanting to purge.

I really stopped buying so much in the line of embellishments when I first got my Silhouette about 13 years ago (believe me, I still have lots of stuff!!) as the Silhouette allows me to do just about any title work I would like without buying alphas, I can create theme related embellishments, borders, tags, etc. Sure, I still pay for the cut files but I don't have to add to the messy piles of stuff all over my scraproom  |

And my answer is yes!
Think Christmas, Halloween, Easter.
It is so, so easy to gather paper upon paper, stickers for days, dies, punches.
And these holidays happen once per year.
But i like to think of my embellishments as herbs and spices. I'd rather have a pantry full of seasonings, than bland pages.

Yes, my eyes are bigger than my scrapbooks. Especially when it comes to free or very cheap stuff. I went to a crop Sat and had second dibs on a huge stack of paper. I only took what I could possibly see myself using, OR, something I liked a whole lot. I quite honestly did not need any of it, except for a few pieces of paper I have actually been hunting for in my own stash and can't find.
I try to give stuff away but not as much as I should and not as often as I could. I check the for sale or trade board to see if I have things to offer for free when someone is searching. But the stuff I have isn't usually what others are looking for.
I just have a huge fear of not having what I need, or worse, knowing I had it but gave it away. Now that I cannot really get 8.5x11 3 ring WRMK albums I am a full blown hoarder of those that I do have.

Yes and no! I often buy and can actually use all I have if I were somewhat caught up! I’m trying to stop buying but it’s all too cute and I can’t stop. So I just need the help to take a break.

Expanding on your metaphor, I'd reply that I'm not buying with my stomach in mind. I'm shopping to fill my pantry. I'm not buying just what I'm going to have on my plate for dinner tonight, but rather I'm buying things that I know I might like to use eventually. Pantry staples, Sunday dinner, but also those specialty items that I'm saving for a special occasion, even though I don't know what that occasion might be just yet. And did I tell you I bake? (not really, just for the metaphor.) I have sprinkles in probably every shape and color you can imagine, and tubes and tubes of food coloring. And so many cookie cutters - they make me happy just looking at them! I love reading recipes, chatting with other bakers, shopping for tools and ingredients, and of course the baking! My grandson just told me the other day that when he comes to visit, he *expects* me to make his favorite treat. You bet I'm going to keep everything I need on hand so I don't disappoint him! If he decides he wants a new treat next time, I'll get the ingredients for that too, but I'll probably keep what I need for his treat too just in case I want to make it again anyway. It doesn't take up much space. My neighbor doesn't get it, and thinks it's a waste of money, but you should see how many spices she has in her pantry. I try not to over-shop for the size of my pantry, and sometimes I have to rearrange thing on the shelves to accommodate some oddly shaped packaging or a family sized bag of whatever, but it all works out. My kitchen is clean enough for company and I can usually find everything I need without any problem at all. grammadee , I bet your pantry is just fine for the way you cook.  |

I knew just what you meant by the title. Yes, my eyes are bigger than my scrapbook. I don’t need anymore stuff (except maybe adhesive) and I’d be fine until way after the apocalypse was over. Sigh. Just scrap more!

Yes. Yes. Yes. I have paper and supplies coming out of my ears. It doesn't fit nicely in my space. It far exceeds the number of pictures I have for the particular themes. And I love it all. And I still buy more. I've been telling myself for years that I need to go on a freeze, or that I need to scrap a certain number of pages before I buy more. So far I have not been successful. Lately though, I have been getting great satisfaction out of using some of my older stash. I also want to go through and do a deep organize/re-organize, and perhaps see if I can purge or garage sale some of what I don't think I will ever use.

I grew up with that phrase too! I've gotten a lot better about shopping within reason. Now I buy a lot less, and I enjoy what I buy a lot more.

Yes, and I love your metaphor! But I do use my old supplies still, and now I've gotten better at only buying supplies that I really like, not just trendy supplies due to FOMO. I love what everyone has said above, about having choices, having the "spices" and "sprinkles" available. We're gourmet!  |

I have a lot of products pertaining to certain themes, not because of the "eyes are bigger" theory....but because of the product turnover rate theory. By it when you see it, otherwise you miss out.
I buy, if I see something that I like, that fits my scrapbook style.
I don't buy something, just because it is considered the "in thing" in the at the moment.
Even if I don't yet have photo pertaining to a certain theme or subject, I buy the cute scrapbook product anyways.
I've passed things up more than once, then down the road wished I had bought it, because now I need it. If I see something I like, and I have the funds then I buy it.
Usually it's stickers and paper.

I am not really a theme scrapper (except for Christmas or travel), but I do the same thing with embellishment types. I LOVE chipboard, word phrase stickers and stamps... I can never pass up a good set! I have way more than I could ever use, but I love them all and love having the selection to choose from. So I don't intend to downsize my collection... at least not at this time. Really though, it just makes me wish I had more time to scrap! Not only are my eyes bigger than my stomach when it comes to picking out supplies, but I do the same thing with projects... I have so many project ideas/started projects that I just don't have the time to get to! One of these days I'm going to take a staycation from work and just scrapbook for a week, ha!
Of course, that will barely make a dent...

And we'll pretend I don't have a cameo sitting right there with more colored cardstock than I could ever use (I don't really buy that anymore, it's from back in the day when I had to have all.the.colors.) |

Paper... I am on my fourth kid playing soccer so I need all the soccer paper. I have two kids in orchestra so anything music themed. I take more pictures in summer (camping, the beach, the pool in our backyard) so need all of that paper asap. Anything with school on it (although I wish it didn't all come in primary colors!) because four kids in school, plus I volunteer there...
Then just your general purpose paper... maps. grids, text backgrounds, clouds.
I'm actually limited on room in my new space and I should not be buying more. Then I was recently at J's and bought a school themed paper pad... the sickness continues.

I get obsessive with a theme, like stars, and I went thru a house phase, (dies, stamps etc)
Christmas is my weakness though. I love it. My favourite time of year.

(hand waving) My problem is that where there are Warehouse sales nearby I can't resist getting a lot of paper/embellishments, etc. at a great discount. But now I have not enough room to store it all. Last month's challenges did a lot to put a dent in my supplies. I filled an entire album. I'm usually pretty frozen except for the Warehouse sales. I have enough paper to last through 100 years of quarantine! |
