Pea advice needed desperately... my sister and I are supposed to fly to SF on Friday to visit my niece. My children have both called me tonight highly recommending that I do not go. Relevant info is that 1. I am 61 2. My DH is diabetic and has heart issues and 3. I spend a great deal of time caring for my 86 year old mother.
My sister is obviously upset that I am contemplating canceling my trip. She is going no matter my decision as she wants to see her daughter.
What say The Peas...Little chance of infection. Go and enjoy. Or Best stay home to protect the health of all involved.

Please take this through the frame that I am in Seattle. I would not travel right now unless there was something imperative (traveling for medical treatment, eg). I am in my 40s and healthy--still, lots of healthy people are getting the virus and aren't dying but are requiring intensive treatment. More importantly, however, I don't want to drag whatever germs I've been exposed to into a new community, or go somewhere and drag their germs back here. It's a collective action problem -- if we all stay put and engage in social distancing (which doesn't involve things like flying), we're all going to be healthier.
I want to be clear -- this sucks. I had plans to go to NYC and see a bunch of Broadway shows and old friends over spring break. I had to give up a very important professional presentation that required travel in two weeks. I have plane tickets to London for May and am really hoping the exponential growth of the virus here and in the UK will have levelled off by then but have prepared my twins for the fact that we may have to cancel our long-planned trip.. We told the inlaws, who have been here to see the kids once in a year, that they need to cancel there trip here in two weeks.
I am really sorry. You have to make your own decision, and I wouldn't call you up and tell you this, but you posted here, so I am answering.

well.. all the tourist sites and the restaurants are empty. no shows, no gatherings over 250 people.. most techies are working from home. school will not be cancelled. there are very few cases in SF itself, though that could change. I think you would be alright, but who knows. I am flying to seattle tomorrow and figure the plane will be empty. there are no crowds anywhere that I can see.
how it looks from here... santa clara south of us has a lot more going on.

My friend’s daughter and son in law are both ER nurses in a hospital outside of SF. She told me 6 patients were admitted today from the cruise ship. One tested positive and others are waiting results. Buts here’s the thing, the people who transported them did not wear hazmat suits, not precautions you would expect. Hell no I wouldn’t come to this area. Citizens can follow all kinds of precautions, but when they handle situations like this, it’s going to get out of control here.

Nope. Don't go.
Of course, I want to do my normal things, like go to church and go out to lunch with my friends. However, I believe that I would be putting more people at risk by those behaviors. I am usually one of those people who thinks, "Everybody take a chill pill; things are going to be fine," but with this thing, I think it WON'T be fine if we don't take it seriously.

The compromised people you love are more important than your sister getting upset or seeing your niece, right now. We don't really know how many cases there are because not enough people are being tested!

I live just north of San Francisco and I won’t go there right now, even though we’re 20 minutes away. My son attends a class there every week and it’s canceled for at least a month. More and more is getting canceled each day it seems.

Based on your husbands medical conditions and your mothers age, I would not go.

My friends just cancelled their SF trip. But they are not in the US and are worried about border closures. Chances are everything wound be fine but it just doesn’t seem worth it right now in your situation because there are so many what ifs. I feel like your trip would be plagued with worried / bad thoughts about the what ifs too so since you can cancel isn’t it better to go under later under more positive circumstances. Isn’t LA closing schools and cancelling events?
