If you need to get some books, you may want to check and make sure your library is still open. I was checking the due dates for my books online, and saw that 2 libraries I go to are closed starting today. We went yesterday, so I'm happy to have books until they reopen. They just couldn't keep up with all the sanitizing they had to do.

LA City libraries are closed. I like how the notice addressed the fact that all expiration dates and late fees will be suspended during the shut down.

I would fully expect this to start happening widespread. As schools go, usually so do libraries (on things like snow days).
My librarian friend said they're upping their digital checkout limit and purchasing more ebooks and digital audiobooks to help serve patrons.

I posted on another thread about this. My dd is a librarian. Unfortunately in these times some libraries are used as a partial homeless shelter during the day, So she anticipates that they will stay open. They have cancelled their story hours and events/programs.

It never occurred to me libraries would have to close. Libraries almost seem like a model for social distancing. However, I guess people are coughing and touching things at the library, which can spread the disease.
I know the most important thing right now is to contain the virus, but it is so sad that so many things which enrich our lives are being shut down.

Actually, my library just closed to the public, except to serve as polling place Tuesday.

I didn't know they were going to close at the time, but wanted to get some books just in case. I have two kids that read the same book, so we can share. I also plan to share with my neighbors. My mom is in Maryland, so I texted her this morning after checking her library's website and seeing that they were closing this afternoon. She said there were so many there, that they couldn't look too hard, but she got some! (Glad to hear that so many people were visiting the library).
I don't have a kindle, so it's books only for me!

Our will close after today. I went and picked up a music CD I had on hold plus a few others. Everything is now due April 13 when they anticipate reopening.

My small town library is closed as of today. Just went Thurs. to the bigger library in the next town and got 3 books I’ve been wanting to read. I expect them to close before my books are due. I do have plenty of reading material. I have a big tote full of paperbacks, some of which are 10 years old - books I bought and kept to reread at some point.

All libraries have been closed in Norway since Thursday. At least I have a house full of books to read, but homeschooling my daughter means I have less time than usual to read.

I have an account with them and they have a great collection. I think it’s city not county. I don’t live in LA so only use their online collection.

I don't have a kindle, so it's books only for me! You don’t have to have a kindle to read. Some come in kindle format and others in another format I forget what. Anyways there are free apps for both and you can read on your phone, tablet or computer. I hope this helps if you run out of books or want something else to read.

I know the most important thing right now is to contain the virus, but it is so sad that so many things which enrich our lives are being shut down. as someone who works in a library, I can say for sure that they are the opposite of a model for social distancing. People are touching practically every surface, and they will sit at a small table next to other patrons with no question. Librarians are in direct contact with the patrons, often sharing computer screens (very close to each other), there are tons of programs and classes/workshops/reading groups with many people (for public libraries often including children and teens), there are shared computers for the public and touch screens/self checkout machines. If circulation staff are checking out books they are likely being handed a library card and touching the same surfaces as patrons. SO much germ spreading. I have honestly never been as sick in my life as I have been since I started working at a library, despite my job not being public facing (meaning I don't interact with patrons). And I've worked retail/grocery!

The library I work at is still open. I have no idea why. We have a very limited amount of wipes, and are expected to clean “high touch” surfaces every 2 hours. And social distancing is not a thing when you are actively dealing with the public in a busy setting. Schools are closed here for the next 2 weeks, so we are wondering who will be dropping off kids come Monday (which they can’t do anyways).
I wouldn’t be surprised if we closed at some point soon. We shall see.

All of ours are closed (a county in Northern Virginia...although I would assume all of them are or will be closed). Starting Monday two of ours are going to be opened for students to come and use the computers. Personally I think that sounds like a nightmare of trying to disinfect keyboards and mouses (mice? ). ick. Supposedly adults will also be able to take books out, but the kids' sections will be closed. I took out a bunch of books the other day, plus of course there are always ebooks to borrow even when the library is closed. Plus, all the books on my bookshelf. No, I'm not going to be suffering from a lack of reading. And since our schools are closed for FOUR weeks I'll have plenty of time.

I have a good number now, but that could be useful if this goes on a long time. I can't read it on my phone, can't see up close well, but that's great to know that on the computer is an option. I appreciate your tips!

In our library, I was so impressed by how much they were wiping down things constantly Thurs. and Fri. And I did use the computer to look up books and to check out books (and used my hand wipes when I finished).

And I've worked retail/grocery! Sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to imply that there wasn't a lot of interaction among patrons and staff at libraries-especially nowadays. One thing I love about the library though, is that I can just stroll among the aisles of books without having to interact with anyone if I choose. I can always find a secluded corner in the library where I can sit and read by myself. I've rarely had anyone invade my space at the library. I'm sure it's a completely different story if you are a librarian. As I said, I totally understand why the libraries are closing, I'm just sad that they have to do so.
