I understand being disappointed with not seeing as much cooking. I love watching them cook. But I did atill enjoy this episode. It was fun seeing all of these non-fine ding restaurants and the food they made. It was touching how much Jonathan affected their business and how much they loved them. Plus,I really love watching people appreciate eating delicious food. It’s the next best thing to eating it myself. It gave me some restaurants to add to my eating bucket list when I make it to LA one day. This is a hard season for me because I do like so many of the chefs. Makes it really hard to see any get eliminated. Even the chefs that I didn't think I would love, I appreciate more this season. Brian Voltaggio, who seemed like a robot on his season (although a robot who can really cook) is exuding so much warmth this season. I don't know if not having his brother around or maybe just time/age, but something has made him more likable. I really didn’t care for Angelo in previous seasons and he also came across more likable. The pictures and info he shared about his son touched me. Out of the bottom three, I was so glad Malarkey was eliminated. Something about him I don’t love. Nothing terrible just a slight sense of irritation. I was worried about Eric. As soon as that biotch Lisa scooped up all the duck and he had to change his recipe on the fly, I thought he was in trouble. Scallops and red cabbage didn’t sound like a good idea to me. I really did not want Stephanie to go home. I love her. Her self-deprecating personality and dry humor always amuses me. I’ve read some of her stuff on social media a sage just seems like someone I’d like to hang out with. As far as the top three, I love that Tom stole some of Nini’s soup since he wasn’t feeling well. Too cute. I was so glad to see Kevin win. As I’ve already mentioned, he’s a favorite. I’m hoping Lisa is the next to go. I too was so sad to see the message about Floyd dying. Loved him in on Top Chef Masters. So scary as he was only a few months older than me.

I agree about Brian. he is coming off a bit less stiff.
Last nights show was good! I really liked the challenge.

Last nights show was good! I really liked the challenge. Yes, I loved the concept of the challenge and seeing the art. Sometimes the themes of the challenges seem kind of forced to me, this one was a great idea.

I liked it too. Sometimes I actually "got it" even when i saw the plate of food. Usually these conceptualizing things go over my head (same with project run way when they are inspired by something and I look at the outfit and never get it).

Finally caught up and got to watch the latest episode. It was funny that Ali Wong and Randall Park were the guest judges for the quickfire. Two days before we watched that episode, I had my dd and dh watch Always Be My Maybe, a movie that was written by and starred those two. If you haven’t watched it, it’s adorable and the family loved it. Ali’s character is a famous chef in it and Keanu Reeves has a hilarious part where they all go to a ridiculously expensive and pretentious restaurant. Anyway, I digress.
Some of the dishes were really strange—watermelon and fried rice? And I agreed with the judges that the chunk looked way too big. Same with the Spam chunks in Jamie’s dish. I love that my man Kevin won with his hot dogs and cheetohs concoction. Can’t believe no one tied it into a scene from the movie where the girlfriend of Randall’s character makes this awful looking pasta dish with hotdogs in it (okay, last reference to the movie, I promise).
The elimination challenge where the chefs are inspired by a period in art was pretty cool. Some did great with it and others not so much. Honestly, how many different purées can Leaan put on one dish? That was a little nuts. I have to say, as much as I love Kevin, his dish looked very unimpressive. Wth was he thinking? And while I really like Karen a lot, did anyone else get annoyed by her little confessional where she said how mad she’d be if she went home because Kevin, whose dish was worse I think, had immunity? The challenge had the chefs divided into groups of three. Each group was going to have a top person (up for the win), a bottom person (up for the loss), and a middle person who was safe. Kevin was just an extra chef on whichever team he chose. Yes, he had a immunity and couldn’t go home, but just don’t make the worst dish out of your original three. If Kevin hadn’t chosen to cook that art period, Karen still would have been on the bottom and still eligible to go home. Now, if the challenge was that the worst GROUP was up for elimination, and Kevin was responsible for the group being the worst overall, I could see being upset that Kevin was ineligible for elimination. But in this situation, no.
I was sad to see Jamie go. He had such a bad elimination on his season, one of my least favorite TC seasons. Even though it was his own fault, I still felt for the guy that season.

Anyone still watching? I loved both the quick fire taco challenge and the restaurant pitch challenges. I have to admit, Kevin's curry chicken theme confused me. I've never associated curries with southern cooking and would love someone to weigh in on that. Malarkey's Baja Asian restaurant named after Shrek's donkey and dragon love story had DD and I laughing until we cried. The thing is, the food he offered isn't what we see around here as Baja Asian, which is usually Mexican proteins added to Asian carbs (carne asada spring rolls, etc.). Sort of the opposite of Asian proteins in Mexican carbs (Korean tacos, etc.). Malarkey in general makes my eyes roll. I'm pretty sure he has ADD and really does hop from one concept to another. DH and I ate at his Burlap restaurant many years ago. He opened a series of restaurants themed around fabrics (Seersucker, Burlap, Gingham, Herringbone, Garbardine and ??) in very quick succession, sold them to a large restaurant group who shut some and consolidated most (all?) under the Seersucker name. He is full of concepts and ideas, has a certain amount of success with being new, but very little sustainability. His latest series is Herb & (Herb & Wood, Herb & Eatery, Herb & Sea, etc.). I guess he's bored with them already. I'd love to learn more about Haitian food and was happy to see Gregory's restaurant theme make it through to next week.

I am still watching. I love Kevin. I am rooting for him all the way. I know nothing about Southern curry, but his concept was so well-developed. Gregory has a great idea for a very unique concept. I like him as well.
Really sad about Eric. He just couldn't get it together.
