What a great idea to help keep the gorcery store clerks safer. IMHO, they are definitely essential and front line workers right now and it's so awesome to see that the company is creating better work place.

Hyvee announced they were doing something like this, but I couldn't picture how it would look. Thanks for the link!
They also said they were temporarily banning reusable bags. I can see that would be concerned about touching my potentially germ covered bags, but I am concerned about touching the potentially germ covered bags in store.

Seems like a good idea, but the shopper is equally close to the checker on the next lane over, with no barrier.

I reached for my bag by the door the one day then thought eww I don't want to take this right now. I use a collapsible fabric box, because I usually buy about $20-40 worth at a time and it can fit in there.

I read that HEB stores were doing the same thing (plexiglass shields). Anyone else think they will remain up once this is all over? As for the reusable bags, I almost grabbed mine to take in on Tuesday, then thought better of it. Don't like all those plastic bags, but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Buddy in the article says not and I chuckled at his last comment: "The screens are sturdy enough to stay up for years, he added, but for now they are intended as a temporary measure. “We’re going to own a lot of plexiglass when they do come down,” he said." Seems like a good idea, but the shopper is equally close to the checker on the next lane over, with no barrier. They are only opening every other cash at the stores here so I don't see it being a problem. Stores here are also waiving the fee for plastic bags and if you do bring in your own bag, you have to pack your own groceries. I use a trolley bag so I'll still use it as I can leave it in the cart and not have it touching the counter.

Oh phew, for a second I thought they were installing the barriers to keep them safe from customers abusing them, and I thought what is this world coming to?! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) Nope, it's the germs.

Sobeys just phased out plastic bags; I wonder if they’ll be bringing them back?
ETA - Sobeys is my regular grocery store. I’ll be curious to see how quickly these are installed where I am.

I read that about HEB, and my mom said she heard that they are going to offer senior shopping times after all, but I can’t find confirmation. Have you heard anything? I’m not the grocery shopper in our household, but I went last time with DH. We have reusable bags, including fruit bags, for the store. Boy did I feel guilty putting all our produce (which is the bulk of our shopping) in plastic bags so no one else touched it while checking and bagging.

I didn't take my reusable bags in earlier this week because I had a feeling a temporary ban on them might come soon (if I didn't already miss an announcement about it over the weekend) and I really regretted it because I came home a thousand bags--one bag would have 2 juices and a similar sized bottle of oil, while another bag could have a one pound bag of ham. So many bags had one, maybe two things in them.

I read that about HEB, and my mom said she heard that they are going to offer senior shopping times after all, but I can’t find confirmation. Have you heard anything? Haven't heard of special hours. However, they (HEB) is teaming up with Favor to provide grocery delivery to seniors 60 and up. Maybe that would work for her? HEB, Favor Team Up to Help Seniors

At the Costco near me, there were signs all around the store reminding people to keep their "social distance." No dots on the floor at the checkout, though -- and they would have been useful!
There was also someone at the entrance limiting the number of shoppers permitted in the store at one time.
