Just talked with MIL, in upstate NY about going out and getting groceries during senior hours. She replied no way will I be going out at 6:00 am in the dark as all the robbers and murderers will be targeting us....ugh... do you really think these individuals will be up this early? please tell me this is not happening?
I'm emphasizing the robbers and murders that will target them while shopping so she will not shop during those hours....isn't a grocery store pretty safe to shop.. now do we need security

That's not really a concern here, plus it is starting to get light out that early.

Depends on the city and state ad it is becoming a thing. Here in SoCal it's different days and times in the morning 7:-8, 8-9, etc. My cousin in NY was telling me about the shopping times for the elderly in NY and she thought they were too early too.

All our grocery stores and Walmart have implemented elderly hours, but they are later than 6 am. All the stores have different times. They are the first hour of the day because the store is cleaner then.

Just to weigh in here. What I've experienced locally with the 1-2 hour Sr. Shopping, it actually creates the unintended consequence of overloading the social distance factor. Just be aware of this for your loved ones. If you are younger and can go for them to leave at their door, I would suggest it.

What is her window to shop? Ours varies by store. It also isn’t everyday.
One thing this virus has done is make my husband and I realize that we are old. I know it’s only in your mind. It’s just a strange feeling.

Most of our eldery/immune compromised hours are 7-8 or 8-9. Does it consist of both the elderly and the immune compromised??? I've been fighting our Publix stores (corporate offices) since I found out that the depart hour here (only 2 days per week!!!!) is limited to just the elderly. It's short -sighted!!!!! They're also missing the point that the people who need food delivered are many Foodstamps recipients. Food stores won't accept it as a means of payment for delivery. Very short -sighted!!! I'll keep fighting it here in FL.

Ours varies by store but for the most part it’s 6a-7a or 7a-8a.

Our stores are 7 - 8 am. I was reading though that these 'senior' hours can provide a false sense of security. People are still out in public. It is still recommended that the younger, healthier people in the family or household do the shopping which is what I'm doing tomorrow morning. DH may take advantage of the senior hour if I can't find what we need tomorrow. We are low on milk and eggs which are apparently in short supply here. There are plenty of other things on my list as I didn't buy that much last week that I would like to have but I can manage without if need be.
Our local butcher shop is experiencing so much traffic, they are limiting the number of people in at a time so you line up outside. They have mini shutdowns for a few minutes periodically to clean and restock. They decided against senior hours and asked if an older person or disabled person shows up, to let them in the front of the line. They have assured the public that they have plenty of meat. They probably do as their commercial business is down due to the restaurant closures.

Depends on stores, some start at 7, some at 6. I think it's ridiculously early and the senior buses don't run until 7:30. But to answer your question, it's getting light at 6 here now in upstate NY.

Yes.., but the seniors think they will be robbed or murdered, according to MiL I don’t know where she lives, but here in suburbia So Cal, you pretty much need a car to get to the grocery store. And then there is a line of people waiting to get in, even for the elderly times. So I think there are too many people around for someone to try to hurt them. Not saying it can’t happen, but I think the odds are low.

Our local grocery store has senior shopping from 6-7. It is in a safe location, so robbery and murder are unlikely. It also isn’t on a bus route, so everyone there either drove (most likely) or walked (not likely). It is also getting light at 6 am. I went at 7 am when regular hours started on Friday and it was full dawn/light by 7 am.
The reason why they are so early, in my understanding, is so that seniors have a chance to get high-demand items, since stocking went on overnight. If the senior shopping hours are later in the day, many staples will be gone.

The stores I've notice in WA are the first hour open, either M-F or two or three days a week. These hours are open to seniors, people with compromised immune systems and those who are pregnant.
Most stores here are closing an hour earlier too, to restock and sanitize for the next day.

Nothing like that has happened here. The early hour is 7-8am and they have a security guard and also store workers are checking that people have the relevant seniors/healthcare cards etc. The one time I went past there was also a queue of people waiting to get in once the hour was finished, so it's not like there's just a couple of old people alone in the dark - it's well staffed, well lit and plenty of other people around.

I’m more concerned about having them clustered when they should really be sheltered in place. like this is how the virus spread like wild fire in the senior care homes in Washington. I know they deserve the special hours but their clustering concerns me. That and having to get up during the cold morning hours.

And the stores are cleaned and sanitised after closing and/or before opening so they are, in theory, cleanest then As for the robbers and murderers - umm...have you had any concerns about dementia? Paranoia is a symptom.

More likely to get trampled on than mugged. Family in a big city tell me that there have been fights with staff when they tried to enforce the early opening for Seniors and Disabled. This weekend has seen a disgraceful amount of visitors to my little seaside town even though nothing was open for them.

Honestly, I'm more worried about the virus than I would be about being robbed or murdered. I have not heard of this happening.
Also, many stores early hour is for people who are : over 60, pregnant, disabled, or immunocompromised. Please dont assume that time is seniors only. That is all anyone seems to hear, so when my relatively young, healthy-looking self is in stores during the early hour, there are lots of looks and comments.

My preference is to shop for my parents and keep them out altogether. As far as any issues with seniors being targeted, I haven't heard anything in our area about that happening.

My DH went yesterday during “old people hours” as he calls it and he said it was quite busy.
