My son wants to watch this but when he went to watch on netflix, it said TV-MA. We don't let the kids watch MA rated shows. But when we checked IMDB it says TV-14. Which is it? Would you let your 15 yo watch it? Netflix doesn't have a different version, do they?

I really can't think of anything I wouldn't let a 15 yr old watch.

I let my 14yo watch it. We have watched horror flicks together since she was little.

hmmmm, I don't know. I wouldn't let my sensitive 12 year old watch it. There are times when it's very disturbing, especially the current season opener. It's not the zombie destruction that's worrisome for me, but the murder of the people in that episode that was difficult.

Mine kid doesn't like it, but I would have let him watch at 15, no problem. I did let him watch Breaking Bad at 15-so use that as a comparison on what I will/won't let him watch. At 15, I did not censor him from watching anything.

I would prob let my 15 year old watch it. It's more gory, than inappropriate, if that makes sense. I have only seen the first two seasons.

I guess some of you don't have skinemax. lol. (we don't but it's often a freebie for a weekend). DS has watched the dark knight trilogy which I guess is pretty dark. Is this similar? I could watch it first but I don't think he wants to wait for me to watch a whole season before he starts on it.
I was curious why netflix shows it at TV-MA when other sites say it's TV-14. Has something changed or is netflix mis-marked?

My 15 year old definitely watches it. Yes there is some gore and violence for sure (it's zombies after all!). I agree with My Shelly that there isn't much I wouldn't let my 15 year old watch though. Movies that I label "torture porn" (think Hostel, lots of rape and torture) are movies I don't allow in the house. Of course in two years, she'll be able to watch anything she wants.

Would you let your kid watch a horror film that didn't have nudity? While TWD has a great story line and most horror films don't the death, blood, gore, and creepy things are similar, but there isn't the gratuitous naked sex scene like in horror films.
I would let my 13 year old watch if it didn't give him nightmares

I don't mind nudity. But I do mind explicit sex scenes (like you might see in Spartacus or True Blood) for him. thanks everyone.

Has something changed or is netflix mis-marked? Okay, I should amend my answer to disallowing porn. (although, with a 16 year old boy, I won't fool myself into thinking that he isn't trying to figure out a way around that. ) I have not seen the Batman movies. Here are the things that I would consider: is your son the type to dwell on possibilities of bad things? This show is about a zombie apocalypse. If he is a doom and gloom, what if the world DOES end kind of guy who will have nightmares about it, then I would reconsider. Is your son squeamish? There is a whole lot of blood and guts. LOTS of blood and guts. People, real and zombie, get routinely smooshed, brains, blood and guts hanging all over the place. If he is the kind of guy that will have lasting feelings about seeing that much goo, then I would reconsider. Is your the son the kid of guy who worries about how people treat other people? Does he get worked up by people being mean to others? If so, I would reconsider. The reality is that the zombies are only a back drop to the story...it is about how people treat other people when there are no more rules keeping us all in check.

my boys watch it with us, and they are much younger than yours. they love zombie genre stuff, and so when we decided to try it we first watched makeup tutorials online of how they change normal people into the zombies, and gory special effects how-tos. after that, they were able to enjoy it for what it is, and not once have they had a nightmare or anything like that.

My nephews have been watching The Walking Dead with me since last year. They are 8 and 10 and have no problems with it. At first I didn't want them to watch it because I thought they would be scared and have nightmares but they weren't scared and haven't had any nightmares. They understand it's not real. I think it depends on the kid. Some of their friends watch it also.

My 14 DD and I have TWD date night every Sunday. She's never been bothered by that type of stuff. She loves horror films and zombie stuff .

My 14 year old son likes the show. Though I think my daughter at that same age (she's 10 right now) wouldn't watch it. Depends on the kid.

It's extremely gory... Enough that it bothers me at some times, and I have a pretty high threshold. While some episodes are okay, I think that overall, if it was a movie, it would have an R rating.
Would I let my 15yo watch it? Maybe. I'd be more likely to let her watch it than I would something that's rated R for explicit sex, but it would be something I'd need to weigh individually. (My older kids are only 13 and 11, and we won't let them watch it yet.)

Not my 15yo . She leaves the room as soon as she sees that it's on. I'm always trying to get her to watch it with me.

While I do still try to monitor what my 15 yo watches (can't be everywhere, I know), he has been watching TWD since it started.
Like anxiousmom said, it depends on your kid and whether or not the gore bothers him.

My son watched it when he was 15. I don't find it frightening, though some of the situations are distressing. You do see a lot of "walkers" have their skulls crushed open.

My son spent a weekend with his cousin two years ago and got hooked during an all day marathon. He is 11 now. This show wasn't even on my radar then, and I didnt get hooked until last year.

Maybe I should try your technique do you ever watch the "making the walking dead" clips? I think they are usually on the talking dead. they love those, seeing the animatronics. I should note, it was never our intention to be like "yeah, this seems like a good thing for our young kids to watch!" but we had one tv, and our schedule only allowed DH and I to watch after dinner, while they were up. so we'd send them to play upstairs or outside, and get absorbed in the show, and then notice two little heads laying on the floor peaking around the doorway so they could watch too. or "oops, I need to get my toy from the toybox in the corner/ask you a question, i'll just run in and ooh, what are you watching?". stinkers. it happened so often we were like ok, let's try it.
