From what I have read, the stimulus package will give most Americans $1200 and $500 per child. We have custody of our two oldest grandchildren, ages 11 and 14. We claimed them on our taxes this year and last year. We claimed one grandchild on our 2017 taxes because both children and daughter were living with us at the time. Will DH and I receive the $500 per grandchild? Will our daughter get it because she is their mother? Will their father get it? Our daughter does work but has not provided any support for the kids since she walked out on them over 2 years ago. Ex-SIL works under the table, I think. It has been about 2 years or so since he worked and paid any taxes.
I love my daughter but I will be so upset if she gets the money for the kids. If she would use it on the kids, I would feel different.

I would assume the payments for the children would go to you since you claim them as dependents.

The checks are based on tax returns, so you should get them.

Since you claimed both children as your dependents on both tax returns, you will get the $500 per child if your income qualifies. www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.html

So I am retired and get a pension.....do I qualify?? Yes, you'll receive $1200 if you earn less than 75K, whether it is a salary, pension, or Social Security. You'll receive a smaller amount than $1200 if you earn between 75K up to 99K. The article that elaine posted is very helpful.

If you read the link I posted, it very clearly states that. Gee thanks..thought the link was about the question the OP asked... Her question related to which years she claimed the grandchildren on her tax returns, since the stimulus checks are based on information in those tax returns. Hence, my answer above yours about which year the stimulus checks are based on and also the link I posted.

Thank you for the answers. I hope I didn't sound greedy. I do love my daughter but providing for our grandkids is a top priority for us. Luckily hubby still is working and I get SSDI. His job is manufacturing and only about 7 work in his huge building. It is going day by day with his job.

Is there a time frame in which these checks can be expected? If our tax refunds always go to bank accounts, will that be what happens?

I don’t think you sound greedy. Based on the purpose of the stimulus, you should get that money and I’m glad to see that you will. Raising grandchildren is a huge responsibility that most of us wouldn’t be prepared for. I commend you.
Or if you filed jointly and your combined income is less than $150,000, you’ll get $2400. This is nice because even if you make more than $75K, your spouse’s income will be taken into consideration. I appreciate that.

There is a TON of info in it. Including: I've got to say, as a parent of an 18 year old who is claimed as a dependent, this sucks. He doesn't qualify for the $1200 or the $500 even though he paid some taxes and was starting to live on his own

Unfortunately I can't read it since I can't afford to read the New York times online. That being said, those people who don't make enough money to even have to file taxes are the ones who are in greater need and they are the ones who will be receiving the least. Makes sense, eh?
Wonder how much we receive if we're "earning" less than $29,000 for a family of 2 (solely based on our SS incomes)?

I'd imagine that wondering about his job safety is a daily occurrence, and I'm sorry for that. I'm on SSI and DH is on SS, and that's our only income. I feel for you both and I pray that he'll continue to keep his job. Hang in there. xoxo
