We have been hearing this too. There is something else going on. Cattle prices are going down and so cattlemen are not bring their cattle to market. Which doesn't make sense because the price in the store is up. We are stocking up on meat. But then you have the added worry about what happens if the electricity goes out. Meat is expensive, so I'm not telling you to do this, just letting you know what we are doing. ETA: disclaimer: this is what I was told (we live in cattle country). I haven't been following cattle prices myself. We have a gas powered generator that we bought about 5-6 years ago after a storm that had knocked out our power for almost a week. We also usually have a couple 5 gallon jugs of gas in the garage for the lawnmower, etc. DH had an electrician friend make the connections in our house so it can be connected to the electrical box in the house so we’ll at least have the freezers and refrigerators powered, the well pump and the microwave oven. We’ve only had to use it a couple times since then, but now we’re prepared.

I felt kind of stupid being the chicken little, but I did it anyway. I was somewhat joking when started one of thos threads, but it helped.
I warned some of my co-workers in a joking way by telling them some of the stuff we talked about here and quite a few of them went out and prepared too.
I did feel stupid at the time. What if it was all hype? I actually should have prepared a little more, but I didn't want to look like chicken little
(I got enough to, but lysol spray for dh's shoes and wipes for everything he touches...I could have used more)

My family kinda laughed at me when I ran to the store to buy TP, Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer. Oh, and bleach. The day I got to the store all of those were very, very limited, so I was grateful. People in my town are still trying to buy TP, so I silently thank the Peas every day for warning me!
DH and I are going to buy a pig and 1/2 a cow next week. And we may just need to invest in a generator, too! My brother has one, but if they lose power he’ll need it for his own house.

ITA! I was able to prepare well before others in my area by listening to Peas that were in the beginning of this. Once they started sharing what they were seeing/hearing, I mobilized. So THANK YOU! Me too. All the while some people at work were saying it was ridiculous. And later complaining they couldn't find staples or TP. I did not find everything I wanted, but enough to get by for a few weeks.

This thread makes me smile. I am so grateful that you all found the posts that we made when it first hit the Seattle area helpful. And I took have found sleepingbooty's posts from France super helpful as well. As for "what's next" for shortages. I cannot, for the life of me, find a source for FRESH chicken breasts or even thighs for DELIVERY. No ground turkey either. I don't want frozen as I tend to cook 4-6 servings of a meal and freeze them individually. I don't want to freeze it again. Chicken and (mainly) seafood are my go-to proteins. I had heard recently that meat and produce are going to become the next difficult things to find Thank goodness we're entering the growing season here in the PNW. Hopefully the farmers can figure out a way to distribute their produce directly to residents. Many of the local flower farmers have figured it out - I got a huge order of fresh tulips delivered to me yesterday, straight from the grower, and there are other resources for delivery from the growers here. PS: has anyone been able to find disposable masks anywhere? 1. I don't sew, and 2. I'm only going out to pick up prescriptions (the local delivery service is not taking new clients) and walk (and I don't need them for walking outdoors) so I think I only need 3-4 to hopefully get me through this. Thanks!

Along the gardening line - for those who don’t garden regularly or have the space for one - growing sprouts can help supplement a diet that may not have enough greens. I have several bags of different kinds of sprouting seeds and a couple of different sprouting systems in my long-term emergency storage. There have been food poisoning cases linked to raw or undercooked sprouts, so it’s important to grow them correctly, rinse them regularly, and even cook them in like soups or stir-fry. There are a lot of articles out there on growing sprouts and the pros and cons of eating them, especially raw. Probably the biggest advantage though is that you can grow a good batch in about a week, even in the fall and winter, and they tend to be more nutritious than the full plant. Growing micro greens is another thing I’m looking into .

I agree! I bought a pack of Costco toilet paper and paper towels a week for the three weeks before all this got crazy. At the time we had mountains of tp and paper towels at costco. I only buy it when we are down to our last roll, so we had no backups. It was great to be prepared and we shared what we had with friends and neighbors!
I always have a lot of clorox wipes, hand wipes and hand sanitizer on hand, so we were set with that.

DH spent $1000 on supplies on Amazon about a few days before I saw the first thread here. I will admit, I thought he was a little crazy...but I didn't tell him that. Then reading the threads, I stocked up on my next 2 Walmart pickups, so was in good shape before the stores were crazy. I have since thanked DH for his purchases.

I think we get better information from the pod than any media outlet. At least, we can compare and contrast it and identify our own trends etc. Thanks to both here and my fairly constant comments, DS was able to score some TP while on the north side of town helping a friend's mom. We're good for another couple of weeks so I have time to scout for more. We just broke into that 16 roll pack and have an emergency crappy 4 roll pack. DS is a TP ho lol! I've thought about putting in a garden for some time. Our back yard used to be a huge garden when the landlord's FIL owned the place and lived here, so I know the soil is good. It's just so darned hot here already, plus BFF is starting one at her place. It's only her there so if she has a bumper crop I'm first in line.

I love the Peas I was kinda prepared based off of what I was seeing here. But at that time, DH was firmly in the "it is just a cold" and "the flu is worse than C19" camp. So he and I were butting heads about how prepared we should be. I did some sneaky preparing though lol He is finally taking this seriously. Last week I asked him if he still felt it was just like a cold, and he said no, absolutely not. In fact, he won't let DS or I leave the house unless it is just for a drive through something. No going in any store or anywhere other people are. He is in law enforcement, so he still is out and about. He is taking care of grocery shopping now.

I was definitely ahead of the crowd in late Feb./early March when I spent about $700 stocking up on staples. There was plenty of tp and paper towels and Lysol spray at that point, but no hand sanitizer. Thanks peas for the early wake-up call.

GREAT suggestions of what we will need in the future.
I did start a separate thread for the future. Hopefully we can get it all in one place.
As for now...TP we are good. I haven’t seen a can of Lysol at all. I did get bleach so at least that’s something. My girlfriend/her husband bought a generator. Hmmmm......things to thing about.

Add me to the list of those stocking up because of the peas. I bought extra paper products and earlier this week I made care packets with some of the extras. I dropped them off on people’s porches and then phoned them to look on their porch. People were very happy to get toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, and personal wipes. 😂

I was JUST thinking about this today - how the sharing of information here has informed and changed my life in so many ways. Definitely for this virus, with preparation and updates. But also in how I view some things and realizing that (a) many people are carrying burdens we don't know about and (b) that many people are wonderful even if their perspectives (which are shaped by family, friends, and even regions of the country) may be very different from my own. Absolutely!! This board has helped me in so many ways!

I don’t know how to stock up on meat. 1. It is already hard to find. I have t been able to get chicken or ground beef the last 3 times I’ve been to the store. 2. Even if I could find it, our stores have strict limits on how much you can buy. 3. I have a side by side fridge. That’s it. No chest freezer. No room to get one. My freezer is pretty packed right now. I have some shredded chicken in freezer bags I cooked a few weeks ago, 3 packages of ground turkey, 1 package of ground pork, about 12 pork chops, a bunch of frozen veggies, frozen waffles, frozen breakfast sandwiches, a frozen meatloaf and a few frozen stir-fry meals. That’s great for now, but every time I use something, I get so stressed out. I am really paranoid about going to the store and getting a curbside or delivery slot is next to impossible.

I, too, was just thinking again today how thankful I am for the Pea Advisories that gave me a heads up early on. DH brags about me to anyone who will listen, telling them how he is just amazed at how I knew to stock up, be prepared, etc., and of course, the Peas get all the credit from me. DH himself gets credit, too, because he was "kind" enough to come down with Flu A in February. DD and I went on an out-of-town trip that he had planned to take with us, but he came down sick the morning we were to leave and asked us to go without him. While we were away, he saw the doctor and was tested, so before DD and I came home, I knew I needed to have my grocery bag loaded with wipes, spray, hand sanitizer, etc. Thanks to him, we were baseline prepared, and thanks to the Peas, we did a far better job of getting fully prepared for CV-19 than we would have without your wonderful insights and advice. Thanks, my friends!

Based on what I read here, I was a believer. I had a business trip scheduled and was gone the week everything started getting cancelled (March 9-13). The weekend before I left I bought what I knew would be hard to find pantry staples and I am so thankful for all of you that warned as to what was coming. We still source things a little sooner than normal especially if we hear that it is becoming harder to find.

You’re doing a good job. A few things I’d consider, are some canned meats, Tuna, chicken, spam can all be cooked up with other ingredients in a pinch. Also consider beans as other sources of protein, jerky even. As far as your limited freezer space, can you get the waffles and breakfast sandwiches out? Get waffle mix/scratch ingredients and make up a batch for the fridge instead of freezer? Same with have bagels/English muffins, eggs, cheese ham etc in the cabinet/ fridge instead of taking up more limited freezer space. Also lunch meats etc that can stay in the fridge.

We need to make sure the well pump is working. Need to make sure we have gas. is there a reason the power is going out? Just storm season? Yes. For some reason, the way our area has been developed it seems prone to damage from straight line winds when there are bad storms. We’ve only had outages that last multiple days a couple times since that one bad storm that knocked out power for about six days, but now we’re prepared if it ever does happen. ETA: we have well water, electric stove, electric oven and microwave. If the power goes out and we didn’t have the generator, our only means of cooking would be the gas grill outside and it doesn’t have a side burner. We also wouldn’t be able to flush our toilets. I was lucky that time when our power was out for several days because it went out right after I had given DD a bath and thankfully I thought ahead and didn’t drain the bath water. We had to bucket flush that whole time.
