So, I got in a bread machine and yeast on Wednesday evening. I made our first loaf (agave/honey wheat bread) yesterday. Ds1 - who is 20 - was fascinated. And, well, who doesn’t love fresh bread? 🍞
So, I told him he could learn to use it if he wanted to. He was up until 1 am last night researching bread making and bread machines on the internet. This morning, when I came downstairs, he already had the bread machine sitting on the stovetop, ready to go, and wanted to start right away.
I made him wait until I had my coffee and did my email. He then helped (watched me on how to exactly measure and level ingredients, and he added them to the pan) get a basic loaf of white bread started. He has been in the kitchen watching it for the past solid hour. That little bread machine window is better than television apparently.
We now can add “it is like watching bread rise” to our collection of sayings (like watching paint dry or grass grow).
What new hobbies/activities are you and your kids doing now that we are staying at home?

Your post made me smile! How cool is that? And there are so many options for types of bread, it could keep him entertained for quite some time.
And yes, fresh bread is amazing. I consider baking bread to be one of the two best smells in the world (the other would be brownies baking).

I’ll bet he would like an ice cream machine too! So many kinds of ice cream recipes to research and try. Watching it churn is fun too.
My daughter has melted all the crayons in the house - creating different combinations and amounts of colors in each one. Apparently she had saved every restaurant crayon she ever used while out to eat when she was little.

we did *nothing* yesterday. haven't left the house in 3 days (i try to get them out for walks in the neighbourhood for fresh air every 2nd day at least).
i would love to make some bread - apparently yeast is hard to come by and i don't have the patience to make my own. or dried fruit. or raisins. and then to try to figure out how much of what i just made to use and how.... pass.
however, today, i will pull out craft supplies and have kids make homemade cards with little messages to send to grandmas/grandpa.
enjoy all that home made bread you are about to have - and the distraction for your son, may it last long and give you a bit of a break.

Yes, I think it will be a very useful kitchen gadget, for keeping ds1 occupied, if nothing else. I’m glad that I lost 17 pounds on WW before the stay-at-home orders came down. Because most of it will apparently come back, since I have no willpower around bread. Bread is my kryptonite. And yes, the smell is positively heavenly.

Apparently she had saved every restaurant crayon she ever used while out to eat when she was little. If I had more spare space in the freezer, and ice cream maker would be good too! LOL! What a cool thing to do with crayons! we did *nothing* yesterday. haven't left the house in 3 days (i try to get them out for walks in the neighbourhood for fresh air every 2nd day at least). i would love to make some bread - apparently yeast is hard to come by and i don't have the patience to make my own. or dried fruit. or raisins. and then to try to figure out how much of what i just made to use and how.... pass. however, today, i will pull out craft supplies and have kids make homemade cards with little messages to send to grandmas/grandpa. enjoy all that home made bread you are about to have - and the distraction for your son, may it last long and give you a bit of a break. I hear you. I wouldn’t be baking bread if I hadn’t scored a machine (the last one of its type on QVC) and yeast (online baking store). Otherwise, we don’t do too much here. I’m sewing a lot, but the boys spend most of their time on the internet. I love your idea of having the kids make cards.

She has a pot of water boiling on the stove then put the glass (like Yankee Candle jar) in the pot. Then she’s pouring the melted wax into little Dixie cups. The big candle jars only seem to melt down halfway before the wick gets lost or there’s just a big hole in the center of the candle and wax on the sides. She’s been a candle jar collector. This could take all day. What is your daughter using for wicks for her new candles? hockeymom4

All the talk about baking bread recently got me thinking about baking some myself. This is what happened yesterday when i tried adding yeast to my Amazon Fresh cart. Glad you had better luck Elaine and that your son is enthralled with the process! Attachments:

I picked up a kit from Dunkin Donuts today. It has six plain donuts and five tubs of colored frosting and five tubs of assorted sprinkles. Even the 18 year old got involved!

I had basically cut it out of my diet as well and lost 45 pounds last year (I did other things, too! Ha) bit I’ve been making bread and I LOVE it too much.

This story makes me so happy Elaine! I'm so glad you found something to entertain your kiddo for a while. There are so many ways to bake bread that I'm sure you can get him hooked on this for a while.

elaine Your post made me smile! Fresh bread is wonderful, and his pride when you all eat something he made will make him glow. 😀 Today my kids broke open the geodes that I ordered from Amazon. I bought the 25 count of 2" -2.5" geodes. Most broke nicely, with good crystal formation. Mostly gray and white quartz. Older ds did get one with lovely amethyst. It was a good outside activity that they'd never done before.

elaine, that is awesome. Your post made me smile. Does he like when you use your Foodsaver or is the noise a distraction? I've been using *yours* a bunch lately since I'm buying way more meat in bulk. Last week I had a huge onion that I only needed a bit of so I used the Foodsaver to freeze the rest of the chopped onion. Once again, thanks for your generosity of sending to me ~ the Foodsaver, not the onion.

Yep I'm seriously in trouble with the bread making lol.
I love to do it by hand though, instead of a bread machine. I do use my kitchen aid for the mixing/kneading part, but I love to let it rise in a bowl and then punch it down and form the loaves.
Today I made challah and hot cross buns - because hey, it's Easter!
The hot cross buns are minus the cross (fiddly work and for just us at home I didn't feel like making a flour paste and dirtying a piping bag) and raisins - I used candied peel that I have leftover from Christmas cookies.
The challah is currently in the oven and smelling amazing. I've never done a four strand braid before so I'm excited to see it all baked and pretty!

Are you going to try making bread by hand? That would be an excellent activity for your son. Even dough that doesn’t rise taste good when it is fried.
My husband’s mother made bread a lot, it really lessen her anxiety. That and canning. She made a lot of relish.

I found my bread maker in a box downstairs. Please bear with me but will any or most bread machine recipes work with it? I think it’s a Panasonic. I don’t have the measuring ‘stuff’ that came with the maker and I am desperate for some crusty homemade bread.

I found my bread maker in a box downstairs. Please bear with me but will any or most bread machine recipes work with it? I think it’s a Panasonic. I don’t have the measuring ‘stuff’ that came with the maker and I am desperate for some crusty homemade bread. Just look at bread machine recipes online and they should work. You should probably track down the manual online for your particular machine and download and/or print it. Different machines have different sized loafs and you need to add wet and dry ingredients in the order called for by your machine. You don’t want to use any of the measuring stuff that came with it anyhow — just regular measuring cups and spoons - so don’t worry about those going missing. You will need yeast, however, which is hard to come by. I had to buy a pound of it online for $10 + shipping. But, it is worth it so far. All the talk about baking bread recently got me thinking about baking some myself. This is what happened yesterday when i tried adding yeast to my Amazon Fresh cart. Glad you had better luck Elaine and that your son is enthralled with the process! Attachments:

Once again, thanks for your generosity of sending to me ~ the Foodsaver, not the onion. The one baking bread is my older son, who is much higher functioning than my younger son - he actually goes to community college and has an amazing memory. He will be on Jeopardy some day and do quite well. jenjie actually met him when I took him up to Philadelphia to see Hamilton last year. So, the FoodSaver doesn’t bother him. I’m so glad that the one I sent you is still a work horse. I’m using mine a ton these days too. I had to laugh at Steph’s thread - we’ve been singing the praises of FoodSavers here for years now.
