Ugh. I spent FIVE hours yesterday on two extractions. Side by side bottom rearmost molars.
I have a teeeeeny tiny mouth. Thereβs a tiny little piece of root that she couldnβt to come free, alllll the way in the back. We finally had to stop. I couldnt take anymore. π₯she said my body should push it out over time, since itβs really loose in there. Four hours of pushing and cranking in my poor mouth With my jaw being pushed so far open that I finally had to put my hand underneath as counter pressure.
So this morning, the joints in my jaw are so tight I can barely open my mouth. My mouth/jawline needs cold, my joint doesnβt like the cold.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to get my jaw to loosen back up?

I actually find heat works for me, though I know I'm weird. Can you take an Advil for the pain? Maybe run some hot water in the sink and stand over it with a towel to let the steam help your jaw muscles?
I have a weak jaw, and always have so much jaw pain when my dentist works on me, it's awful. He uses a bite blocker to keep it from popping but I usually need a hot bath and some Advil the day of and after to get it to relax.

I would call the dentist or doctor and see if you can get some muscle relaxants..

Did the dentist prescribe any anti inflammatory medication? It sounds like your jaw tissue might be inflamed from all this ordeal. Iβm sorry you are dealing with this. I agree with you, mouth pain is awful. I donβt have any magic suggestions, I just wanted to offer sympathy.

You probably just irritated your TMJ too along with the numbing and the extraction. Can you take ibuprofen?

If the pain lasts... Chiropractor. Once the swelling subsides. I had one extraction and my jaw was out of alignment. I had pain radiating up into my forehead and down my neck. Agony. I hope you make out ok!

A sock full of rice heated in the microwave for 2 - 2.5 minutes. Then you can curl it around your jaw. I'm sorry you had to go thru that kind of trauma.

Ugh, my jaw hurts so much too! I have a temp crown on a lower molar, and it's been on for over a month. Can't go to the dentist yet, bc of you now....Covid-19. The nerve started acting up and I have pain from the bottom of my ear to the middle of my chin if I drink anything cold, or bite down too hard.
I found Aleve works best right now, but I had to give up my ice water. I've been drinking it luke warm and it's not very appealing.

My dentist had me alternate acetaminophen and ibuprofen every couple of hours. For example, take acetaminophen, then in 2 hours take ibuprofen. Repeat, being careful not to exceed maximum dosages. I found it to be very effective. However, if your pain becomes worse, that is an emergency and I bet they'd see you.

Ice not heat.
Tylenol to reduce inflammation.
Were you told to gargle with warm salt water?

Itβs healing. Ice packs have been good, I have an appointment in two weeks for a root canal and a crown. No bueno.

I do what mikklynn does - acetominophen and ibuprofen, but I eat first and take them both at the same time for pain that is difficult to control (TMJ, migraines, bad cramps). It works well. Watch that you don't take more than the recommended dosages in 24 hours like she said. It does seem to work and last for awhile.
Hope you feel better! Pain is the pits.

After ice, try a Hot water bottle and ibuprofen. The tightness may last a week or more, don't be surprised if it does.
