We are trying to buy an N99 or N95 reusable mask for our daughter. When restrictions are lifted, she will have to wear a mask until meds or a vaccine are available. Does anyone know where to get one now? The sites I have seen are closed. Thanks!

I checked this morning where my mom got some, because I’d like to know if she got real ones before DH uses it, if that makes sense. But she mailed it without the packaging and when I googled the mask from her invoice I couldn’t find them anywhere. I’m concerned some places might be taking advantage and I’d like to know if there is some sort of certification. I’m trying to get more info from her, if I do and find some I will let you know! The nursing home DH works at gave them 3 regular masks and told the to alternate when they wear them. And elaine was kind enough to send him some homemade ones so he’s been wearing those over the other masks and switching them out during the day. But I’d prefer for him to wear the homemade masks over the N95.

DH ordered reusable sports masks that have replaceable "N95" filters back in early January from Amazaon...before PPE was an issue. When they came, the packaging says it's a reusable activated charcoal dust mask. I have a hard time believing it's N95. However, NY says we have to wear a mask when we go out...so I'm wearing it when I go out.

Thank you seasidemermaid, that was very helpful. I’m sure these are fake based on that.

Thanks seasidemermaid. That was helpful. Vogmask is where all of my daughter's "zipper sisters" get their masks from and it looks like that is wrong too. I am making masks, and now I guess I will have to make them for her with a filter inside. Oh goodness, I pray they are good enough. Her life depends on it.

Patter I have a few extra, unused, that my uncle sent me. I can send you one if you like, PM me. I think I recall you saying your daughter is very small? This mask may not have a perfect fit, as she might under normal circumstances need a small fitted N95 and this one is more like a medium. If it was available I'd use a small. But I've been using these and the one provided at work (also medium) and switching them out. Have her put a fabric or surgical mask over it to help protect it when out and about.

Just a thought on homemade masks vs. N95 masks. N95 masks will filter out particles down to 3 microns in size (we use them at work for people who work in dusty areas.) I've read that Covid-19 particles are 1 micron in size so they have the potential to be breathed in through an N95 mask. Homemade masks are only as good as their filters, if any are even present. A homemade mask with little or no filter will not provide much protection to the wearer but it could provide protection for others around the person wearing the mask.
If your daughter is immune-compromised and wants to greatly reduce her risk of breathing in Covid-19 particles she may want to consider being fitted for a respirator that provides protection down to at least 1 micron. You may be able to buy such a respirator online or off the shelf however for it to fit and work properly it must be fitted by a professional.
I'm not a professional on the subject of masks and respirators, but I have some knowledge because of my work environment. When I was tested for Covid-19 (negative thank goodness!) the doctors examining patients were wearing respirators, not N95 masks. You may want to ask your daughter's doctor what he/she recommends, just in case that higher level of protection is needed.

My son found one at an Ace hardware store. It was part of a kit that contained a mask, goggles and one other item. He only needed the mask, but said the whole kit was only around $16.

I found n95 masks at Menards at the beginning of the month, in the paint section. I bought one package. Might be worth a call to other paint stores.

I’d suggest a paint store. Sherwin Williams, Dunn Edwards, Rodda etc... not sure when they will get some in stock, but they usually have them.

So much conflicting info on using cloth masks. Filter, type of filter, fabric type, multiple fabric layers, how many is enough? I have seen a medical serviced provider's chart which states a big fat "0" protection from cloth masks. A family member has made and distributed masks to us. I just don't know how much confidence to have in it. I have also see where the 6' distancing recommendation isn't near enough. It should be more like 15'. Quite a difference isn't it? I think I will just stay under the bed!

A friend made homemade masks with a double layer of high quality quilt fabric with a slit in which to slide a cone coffee filter.
She had a bought a box of the coffee filter for her son to use in his woodwork shop.

bagI am not sure you can sanitize the masks N95. They are sending them to somewhere in Ohio. Actually you can sanitize the homemade on better. Put a slot for a cut up vacuum cleaner bag, HEPA filter NOT HEPA FILTERS OR VACUUM BAGS. I've read that they both have tiny GLASS SHARDS!!!

This is not true for regular vacuum cleaner bags for home use, at least not for the good ones. Industrial ones, yes. But not home use ones. Always double check of course.

Thanks everyone. She has two artificial heart valves and a patch on her aorta. Everything loves to stick to her valves thus that's what the extreme danger is. I am sewing a lot of masks for local needs so I do know what fabrics to use and what filters to use/not use. Her friend had a heart transplant and wears one at school too. So, the two teachers (my dd and her friend) will both be wearing masks but her friend has had hers for a while (before all of this). We messaged her cardiologist last night to see what he wants her to do or if he has any ideas. Zee thank you for the kind, kind offer. I don't think it would fit her. I am even thinking of trying to find a child size. I would rather you keep it than it be way too big for her and you lose something you could use. I truly, truly appreciate you. I also messaged a church friend last night that might be able to help. This really stinks for the high risk patients that will need to continue to wear masks.

Remember—masks are NOT a substitution for social distancing. Honestly—short of a respirator mask—they will do VERY LITTLE to protect you! We wear the masks to protect others—not ourselves. They CAN reduce the virus that WE might spread. The idea is that if everyone wears a mask, there will be fewer virus particles for us to come in contact with. So, ABSOLUTELY, wear a mask. But don’t get caught up in trying to get an N95 (unless, of course, you are a frontline worker, or extremely vulnerable, like Patter ‘s daughter). And, PLEASE, do your research before cutting up air filters or vacuum filters. Many contain fiberglass shards that can be released when cut. I don’t want to breathe in glass anymore than I want to breathe in Covid 19.

Well, in all of my reading, I have found way too much controversy in materials used except the fact that you should use a good quilters cotton and flannel. Those are the materials I am using. If I want to insert a filter, I am going to use a paper towel. It is better than nothing, and I am not going to potentially expose anyone wearing my masks to something else--fiberglass, etc. So, while it may not be the "popular" answer, it's the safe answer for me. We are not even using filters--just cotton front and flannel back. Now, my daughter's mask--still working on what we will do. I have an idea but what to hear from her doctor first.

Patter I have a small face as well and found that a wire nose bridge and elastic around the neck and head work a lot better to hold the mask. I’ve been making this version and she has a free pdf for a child sized pattern. I haven’t tried the child sized one it yet, but everyone seems to like the adult fit better than the other styles I’ve tried: lorrienunemaker.com/2020/04/04/how-to-make-a-face-mask-with-filter-pocket/
