On my last grocery trip two weeks ago, I bought 4 cans of Bumblebee chunk light tuna. I haven't bought tuna in years and was shocked. First, the cans are down to 4 ounces. Back in the day, they used to be 7 ounces and the little individual ones were 3.5 ounces. (I know because I looked up a recipe in an old cookbook.)
But, what really got me was the texture. It was almost like a pate. It's a disgusting, watery mess. It also has no flavor. I got chunk light because I wanted more of a tuna flavor.
What the hell happened to canned tuna?

Yes I noticed this a few months ago. It’s gross. I’ve gone back to solid white albacore. Not great with regards to mercury levels but at least it is filling and tastes good

I get the packets. The stuff from a can is too wet...

America’s text kitchen had an article on making the best tuna salad and they suggested white albacore. Maybe try that? And get the pouches in water, they aren’t yucky. That brand comes in 2.5oz (which is perfect for lunch) and 5oz I think. Just had some delivered!
eta: I just checked the article and they said solid white albacore. Wild Planet White Albacore Tina was their favorite. But if you want a stronger flavor they do sell yellowfin in cans now, maybe even pouches.

Maybe "chunk" doesn't mean what it used to mean...

Maybe "chunk" doesn't mean what it used to mean... Quite clearly it now means "creamy" which isn't how tuna should be.

What the hell happened to canned tuna? Mislabeled cat food? I don't know what's changed, but I switched to either yellow fin or white albacore tuna a few years ago. Much better taste and texture.

It looks to much like cat food. I haven't eaten it in years. I eat only solid white albacore

I opened tuna for the first time yesterday in a long time and noticed the same thing. It was packed in H2O also but was too creamy. Added more celery to get some texture back to it.

My husband bought some and it was the same way, and it was so freaking pink. Like the color of pepto. So gross. I typically only buy the sweet and spicy one in the pouch or solid white, he knows better now. I showed him what it looked like and he was horrified.

Like many products, less quantity as well as quality.
But, my first thought was their way of getting back for having to pay out in a class action suit. That would have only been Chicken of the Sea though.

Funny -- I just had a poor experience with tuna also. I'm glad to hear it wasn't me!

Years ago my husband and I used to enjoy tuna sandwiches with dill pickles and lettuce. That was years ago when tuna packed in water was good. Now it is paste-like and smells like half-spoiled fish. Ugh. Can't eat it anymore. We occasionally eat chunk albacore these days but even it isn't as fresh-tasting as it used to be.

This is why I only eat solid white albacore from Costco! Otherwise I am grossed out!

They've all turned to shit. You have to buy Kroger brand. It's the chunkiest.

The solid white albacore at Aldi is really good and very inexpensive. A little more than a dollar a can. It is all I buy.

Interesting about the size. I’ve been complaining how a can of tuna use to have a lot more in it than now. This explains it.

Interesting about the size. I’ve been complaining how a can of tuna use to have a lot more in it than now. This explains it. Downsizing is the biggest scam in grocery marketing. They shrink the size little by little thinking you won't notice. So, over 30 years, the 8 ounce can of tuna has become 4 ounces. Today's double roll of toilet paper is the same or less that the roll I grew up with in the Sixties and Seventies. The rolls got smaller and smaller until they had to introduce double rolls. Now, you don't find single rolls anymore. A can of coffee used to be one pound. Last time I looked, it was 12 ounces. A half gallon container of ice cream used to be, well, a half gallon. Now, it's 3/4 of a half gallon. The number of items this has happened to is crazy. Just raise the damn price.

Another Kroger brand chunk light tuna in water fan here. It actually is chunky! 5 ounces for about 70¢ There is no Kroger where I live so I stock up when I am in Houston.

I’ve switched to the bagged salmon for my “fish salad” sandwiches for the most part. I will be trying the albacore for a tuna fix.

I get the solid white albacore from Costco or Wild Planet. DH complains about the price, but he doesn't eat it at all so he can hush.

The thing that galls me the most is they advertise it as being “easier then ever” when now it is in a solid bar so if you want 3 Oz you have to cut the bar without shattering it to smithereens; before each 1 Oz bar was individually wrapped. It is way harder to use now and costs the same for half the product. Good to know about the Kroger, I will try that next shopping trip.

I hear you about the baking chocolate.
The worst part about changing sizes is that old recipes don't work anymore.
