What a rocky four days it was... For some background... I’ve been working for two companies that are partners (same location) and on March 17 started working from home due to the pandemic. Thursday at 4:30 my manager called me and said that a decision from higher up had been made that unless I could come in and work at the facility full time starting the next day that I would be terminated. No job to come back to but I could apply for future openings. They claimed I rejected my job offer (I didn’t, it was in negotiating and it was taking forever). I can’t come in because no day care or schools are open. And then on Monday afternoon he called and said the company was keeping me on payroll and had no idea if my roll would be changing or if I’d still report to him. Then my old manager called me and told me to please be patient and wait. This is so nuts! I have been sick for days. I am very thankful though that both my managers really like me and know I am needed there. ETA: yes. 4 pm on Friday IS Firing Time indeed! My position was made “redundant” and I was let go effective immediately. ETA: one of the heads in the QA team just called and asked if she could put my name forward as top choice for a QA lead! How nuts is this? I doubt I will get hired but I’m so very pleased my colleagues like me so much.

And of course now I have zero trust in either of these companies. We have laws currently to protect job loss due to the pandemic so claiming i rejected my letter of offer is a sneaky way to try to eliminate my employment. And I also think it’s reprehensible that while my province and country are requiring social distancing to demand me to find a place to take care of my kids.

I’m of the opinion that if you have the ability to work remotely, just keep you working remotely for a while! What a mess! I hope they give you some certainty soon.

They are desperate to up production and need bodies running the labs. I was always supposed to be running one of the lab rooms but most of my job had been writing standard operating documents and controlled forms, I have spent maybe 2% of my time in the lab and prob half of that was just to figure out what needed to go into documents, not doing any actual lab work.

I would start working on childcare for the future. Where would they be if you were working? Could they stay home on their own yet? That would give you more options

That would give you more options Normally my mom watches them but she’s immunocompromised and my dad has lung disease so they aren’t going out or seeing anyone. And no, they can’t stay home on their own.

Oh man. That's stress that you don't need right now. I'm reading this kind of thing a lot though - companies are getting themselves into a mess over whether they can afford to stay afloat and what the laws are for their staff, and being in your in-between position is probably not easy for them to work out. Lots of knee-jerk reactions and mis-communications are happening.
I really hope it evens out for you.

first of all, your company is crazy. maybe they wanna work things out themselves before reaching out to an employee and putting that kind of stress on them?
that is a tough situation for sure, with your parents' health and them being the ones you have been able to rely on before.
i just got a new job this week (yay!). i negotiated a may 18 start and will work in the office but no walk in traffic, just her and i, she doesn't bring clients' in at all either. she wanted to 9-5 and saturday mornings.
my kids are a bit older but still didn't feel comfortable working 6 days a week.... i was able to work out a shorter workday and no saturdays, unless unusually heavy work load. is there any flexibility that if your kids are a bit older you could do lab work for 3 hrs a day and then work on documenting procedures from home half days?
i feel for you - a lot of people are going to be facing these kinds of stressful situations. employers scrambling to get people, people needing income but having to weigh the risks. good luck!!

What/Who are essential workers using to take care of their kids?

What/Who are essential workers using to take care of their kids? In my case, DH and I are both essential workers. Luckily our children are adults living on their own so we don't have the issue of child care right now. At my company all employees are considered essential however we have put in place a policy that if you have to care for your child(ren) during this time, you can take off work without using PTO or being subject to the attendance policy. Depending on the length of time the employee needs to be off (either short-term for temporary child care issues or longer-term) the employee is either paid their normal wage or for longer term child care issues they are able to use disability benefits.

I'm guessing the production workers where I work are being forced to find alternate care for their kids- an older family member, friend, etc. so it's not really safe for any of them, doing it that way, but they have to do it.

What/Who are essential workers using to take care of their kids? Some daycare centers have been allowed to remain open for those kids (not sure how they determine who can be open and/or how many kids they can have). This is why opening schools/camps/daycares is just as important as opening up other jobs. Who typically watches kids when schools are closed? Grandparents. The very population at the most risk.

My county in Central NY has daycare spots available for essential workers for free. (The YMCA after school program my kid went to transitioned to essential worker care.) My company is deemed essential, but I am able to do my job at home. If I couldn't, I don't know that I'd be comfortable sending my youngest DS.
They are talking about plans to reopen other businesses. I gotta believe that the childcare will have to open up too.
FTR, I have 2 boys ages 15 and 10...and would not be comfortable leaving them home alone together for more than 15 minutes.
