Tornado shelter? Iβm asking this in jest. Really I am. But damn here it is tornado season and it started off with a bang tonight. Three in my area and me freaking out pacing in the hallway because our house has no decent place to shelter. Every year I tell myself Iβm going to save up to get one and it never happens. Grrrrr. And now of course it wonβt be able to happen with the lay off. I need to win a $4000 scratcher. Lol π«πͺπ«

Iβm with you l. The storm was loud and the wind was crazy. I had things inside my house rattling. The clouds afterwards are amazing tho!

Iβm glad I have a basement. We donβt get a bunch of tornadoes but in my lifetime I remember 5 or 6 touching down near me. So thatβs likely 1 every 8-9 years. Most of the homes in this area have basements for shelter. I would be nervous as well if I didnβt have one.

I grew up in Utah and we had a basement, and everyone I knew had a basement. Then I moved out of Utah and learned not everyone has a basement. THEN we spent eight years in central Texas and every time the tornado alarms went off I would think WHY DONβT WE HAVE A FREAKING BASEMENT!?!?
I feel for you, please stay safe and I hope they pass soon!

Grew up in Nebraska, tornado alley, seemed like we spent a few evenings each week sitting in the basement during April/May. Moved to Texas, and as stittsygirl pointed out, there are no freaking basements. We don't have a lot of tornadoes in SE Texas, TBH, but when we have a hurricane it can spin off tornadoes. During Harvey we had multiple tornado warnings over the course of three days. Depending on where we've lived, we've either used a downstairs bathroom, walk-in closet, or (in the case of this house) interior hallway as a "shelter." It is what it is!

Stay safe out there!
I agree, after spending the wee hours of the morning after Easter crammed in a tiny bathroom with 4 people, 2 cats, 1 dog and ddβs damn snake, Iβm ready to live somewhere with a basement again.

When the sky turned green and it sounded very quiet or like a train was coming, we bolted for under the stairs. I lived in Omaha when tornadoes ripped down the interstate and obliterated entire neighborhoods. We have a crawl space now but no basement in Colorado. We've also not had any tornadoes in my area for 33 years. We've had a few funnel clouds though. I think the mountains mess with their patterns.

My mom liked to tell the story of the 1973 Omaha tornado. I think it went straight down 72nd street or something. They lived in an apartment at the time and she rushed downstairs with infant me to hide with other residents in a storage closet. Good times! ETA: Google says I'm confused. Tornado was in 1975, so it would have been toddler me and infant brother. Super fun!

tincin and stittsygirl Unfortunately eastern OKs ground was not made for basements. The much older homes that do have them eventually filled them in with cement. They leak and shift and just are a constant problem here. If I ever have the money for a shelter I am getting the kind that will go in our garage floor. Merge our house is a ranch style with no interior rooms and one interior hallway. What idiot in OK thought that was a good build?!? π€¦π»ββοΈπ

Yep - tornado season started off with a bang last night! Our sirens sounded three times - can't remember that ever happening!

I would donate! I had a tornado, EF1, less than 1/4 mile from my house (in MA!) and if I never see another one it will be too soon. Scariest f'ing thing ever and it was an EF1, I can't imagine something bigger. Came out of no where and we don't have sirens. I can't imagine having a "season" for tornadoes. I like a little warning for my natural disasters: Hurricane, Blizzard, Nor'Ester I'm getting at least a weeks notice to prepare.
So you set up that Go Fund Me and I will be the first person to donate.

They were so lucky by less than a block, where damage was heavy for miles. I had asked them where they would shelter in their house and suggested a closet under the stairwell. So that is where they waited. The next day they ordered a storm shelter. $4,000.00 for XL installed underground in their garage. It was an easy process and I am certainly glad they have it. I hate tornado season. We had 3 warnings last night.

We moved from one end of Tornado Alley to the other. North Central Texas to Nebraska. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my basement in NE!!!
I grew up in California, Iβm used to βsurpriseβ natural disasters like tornadoes and earthquakes. But that basement does make me feel much safer.

Growing up in Arkansas, our tornado shelter was a small interior walk-in pantry, but I guess like Oklahoma, we didn't have basements because of the type of soil. When I moved to Connecticut, everyone has basements, and while we have had a few tornadoes in my 33+ years living here, there are no sirens to tell you to go to the basement, LOL.
One spring when I was home visiting family, we stayed in a hotel and the sirens went off. Tornado veteran, I shooed DH and DS downstairs to find shelter and found the front desk clerk and a bunch of guests milling around nonchalantly in a room FULL of windows. I'm like, "why does it look like a cocktail party in here?", while searching for an interior windowless room.

I don't think it's tacky; certainly not any more tacky than half the GFM I've seen! But in seriousness, you can enter the state's lottery for a storm shelter rebate. Couldn't hurt, anyway! www.ok.gov/OEM/saferoom/app/index.php
