How long before you replace the battery? AND if that doesnt stop the chirping, how long before you replace the detector ?
Because the next door neighbors have had theirs chirping for months now. Constantly. For months.
I was able to ignore it when it was hot and we had the air on, but with cooler weather and open windows......
Would it be wrong of me to leave some 9volts on their doorstep with the phone number of a repairman repairman on a sticky note attached?
Oh, and they are not friendly so being neighborly and offering a stepladder and some help won't go over well.

When our smoke detectors start chirping they don't stop until the batteries are changed, The dogs are terrified of the chirping so we have to do it with in seconds of the first chirp or we have 3 freaked out pups.

Same, one of my dogs gets very nervous at the noise. Plus it would drive me insane in a short period of time. Can't even begin to imagine having to listen to it for months.

I can usually wait a couple of hours for someone tall to come home. But not more than a day. I can't imagine why your neighbors aren't doing something. Are they hard of hearing?

Have they all died from carbon monoxide poisoning? (tic) Cause those things are LOUD and you'd have to be dead or deaf for it not to drive you crazy. Yes, drop off a package of batteries and number to a repairman. Hopefully one of them can work up enough energy to replace the batteries and your problem will be solved.

Me, immediately, dh, within a day of so. His hearing is no longer as good as it was when he went into the Navy.

DH changes the batteries at the first chirp. Even if it's the middle of the night. Even if we are late for an appointment. Even if he's on his deathbed with a mancold.
In other words, he's almost irrationally prompt about it.

Have you actually seen your neighbors in the past few months? Because I can't believe anyone would leave the detector chirping for months. I get antsy and a headache if I have to hear it for more than 5 minutes. Did they vacate the house or are they - gasp - dead??

That chirp is maddening. I don't see how anyone could take that sound for even a day.

Don't leave batteries. Our first smoke detectors used 9 volt batteries, but the last ones we had used AA's. Our current detectors have 10-year pre-installed batteries. Once they start chirping, you have to replace the whole unit.
I think you should just woman up and go ask them to take care of the situation. If they don't change their batteries or their smoke detectors, then check with the police or fire department and ask if there's anything they can do about it.

Like within seconds. There is nothing more annoying than that sound. I had one start chirping at 3am...I was up on a ladder changing it by 3:10am.

It's not always the batteries, though.

You wouldn't believe how many people call in to order with it chirping in the background. It is insane and I would go crazy. How can you ever relax. And even if it isn't the battery wouldn't you figure out what is causing it and fix or replace it? I wouldn't sleep a wink.

Of course you would. But I'm pointing out that it isn't always the battery. Sometimes the fix isn't nearly as simple.

Immediately. I usually have batteries at the house for things like this but if I didn't, it would be unhooked completely and I would get batteries that day or the next day if it happens at night. I don't like to unhook them but I will because the chirping will drive me nuts.

If y'all sell smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, I would probably try to upsell them and see if they wanted to purchase one to replace the one that is chirping. LOL But, I do realize you might be limited in what you can really do on the phone with a customer.

We change ours immediately. That chirping drives me crazy.
Funny story=》back in the days when smoke detectors first became commonplace in homes my grandparents received one as a Christmas gift ( weird I know). Anyway they lived in a 100+ year old house on 225 acres. When the battery started to die my grandmother looked high and low and complained for weeks that she couldn't find that dad gummed cricket. It's funny now but not when we were breathing bug spray 24/7.

It's funny now but not when we were breathing bug spray 24/7. That is funny. We had a cricket in the house for a week before I found it just sitting in the downstairs tub. And yes, it did sound just like a chirping smoke detector . If it is late at night, I might just pull out the battery and replace it in the morning, but there is no way I can listen to the chirping all night. Many years ago the battery died in my rental apt smoke detector. It was a great old building with high ceilings and I didn't own anything like a stepladder, so it chirped for a couple days before a tall friend came by to help me out. After I changed the battery, I ran into the property manager in the hall trying to figure out where the chirping noise everyone had complained about was coming from, because he couldn't hear anything.

I would go knock on the door and then someone answers say "thank God your alive! I was beginning to wonder why you don't hear your alarm. Glad to see you are okay. Next time I won't ring your doorbell ..since this is a false alarm. I was so scared!"

Mine are hardwired and the landlord is required by law to ensure they function. Tenants are required to report non functioning detectors. It's one of the few things for which you can call the 24 hour maintenance line and get considered an emergency. In other words-- I call immediately. It's changed within hours.

About a month after we moved here we heard a loud chirping noise in the middle of the night and Gadget freaked out and started running around like crazy. then Skip heard it and started freaking out. At first we couldn't figure out what it was. and then when we were all awake and thought about it we knew it was the smoke alarm.. but we have 5 of them in the house and it took us a few minutes to figure out which one it was. so we changed the battery. it still chirped. we changed it again. still chirped. Come to find out our batteries were old and were not fully charged. so we had to take a battery out of something else to put it in the smoke alarm. We tried to leave the battery out but it made the chirping louder and more frequent. The next day we went and bought a pack of batteries and replaced them all.....

Hmm... growing up we could wait weeks. It's a low enough chirp that eventually it becomes background noise. Most of the time when we were home it was after work and school and just too tired to wrangle the ladder and fuss with the thing.

Ours talk. loudly! Try being in the house, just you and your DH, and all at once you hear someone talking upstairs in your new house...and you are both in the same room. We changed the batteries pretty quickly once we realized what it was. It goes all throughout the house, revolving from one unit to another, like a rolling warning. I had warned ours new neighbor and she called me a few days ago to thank me for the warning. Theirs had gone off. Her DH is not in the best of health, so while he was climbing a ladder to change out the batteries, he got out of breath and that set the carbon monoxide warnings off too. Their dog was pretty stressed.

I have one dismantled on the kitchen table right now - new batteries didn't fix it, and it makes me crazy to hear it chirp. I'm getting a new one tomorrow on the way home from work (we have 2 other functional detectors in place, so I think we're ok for the night )
