It’s not the wiping down of machines that concerns me about gyms. It’s the heavy breathing that exercise unavoidably causes that concerns me. My gym is smaller and not that busy. I could manage wiping the machines too and had a whole plan - change before going and bring my own wipes, go straight to machine, wipe it down with my own wipe, wipe it down when I'm done, walk back out - touch nothing else. BUT the breathing has me concerned. There is 0% chance I would go to any class in those small rooms. The spin class rooms especially are tiny and between the sweating and the breathing I'm pretty sure they're a death trap. So now I'm not sure. It's killing me not going to the gym. I've been looking at buying a bike or elliptical this week, but everything looks sold out. Right. I’ve always wiped down my own machines before and after use. I’ve never relied on other people doing the right thing. And wearing masks doesn’t seem like it would help, and would even be prohibitive to being able to breath properly during exercise. I really don’t know what the solution is for them for the breathing, but that would be my first concern.

Not going to be a popular opinion here... but I'm going back the day they open. I'm not going to change the rest of my life because of this virus. Yes- I'm being as careful as I can, but I'm still out in the stores everyday working. This is going to go on for months... Yeah, I'm out and about and taking my chances. So, yes, as soon as the gym opens I'm headed there. Honest to god, it's only here on the board where I'm hearing "I'm staying in until . . . " whatever - vaccine, 2 weeks clear, etc. Out in the real world here in the midwest (the great flyover states, for you elite coasters) we are just doing our thing, using the prescribed precautions and keeping on trucking. Otherwise, how do you think you're going to get your food picked, processed, and to the grocery stores so you can sit on your tuffet and order online? I’m in the Midwest. You don’t speak for me.

From the elite west coast of California, where apparently we are not the real world, we still have hundreds of thousands of workers picking produce for the rest of the country. We have truckers working to get that produce delivered. We have health care and first responders putting their lives on the line every day. Our unemployment rate is skyrocketing. We are all not sitting around surfing the internet and watching Netflix.

While I'm following the rules (even if I don't agree w/ them all) I don't intend to stay at home once the requirements are lifted. I will live my life, just with more hand sanitizer than before. And that's what I'm hearing from most of the people who live around here. I've not heard anyone I know IRL say they're staying home till there's a vaccine. Quite honestly while many peas are saying that I can't help but wonder if they'll really stick to that.....they may not be first in line to board a plane to Disney World or the SuperBowl, but will they really avoid movie theaters, restaurants, family BBQs, etc for a year or more? I'm skeptical but to each their own. I don't see it as a geographical issue as much as I see it an economic issue. The upper/upper-middle class (which most peas are part of) are more able to live off savings or work their office jobs from home; most blue collar workers don't have that luxury.

I don't go to the gym, and my inground swimming pool will be ready next week and I will swim when the weather cooperates more. BUT that said, My son will probably be first in line on Monday when his cross fit gym opens back up. He is a high schooler and has my full support. Here where I live and the neighboring counties the hospitals have no covid patients (they post all institutions with 2 or more cases) so I am pretty confident the "point" the quarantine has been met.

Yeah things are definitely different depending on location. My township had 20 new cases this week. People are not happy in NJ, as I said previously. In the last week the objective has changed from “flatten the curve” to “lower the curve.” The governor moved the goalpost.

To be fair, I’m not sure being so close to nyc, that flattening the curve was ever really the real goal there, realistically. They would’ve had to lock down, much earlier - to achieve that.

Well, I have a friend who works for a higher end gym and they do a deep clean once per quarter at the most. So, no. I'd be staying away.

There are people everywhere that are doing okay, and people EVERYWHERE that are also struggling. While you both might buy into Midwest/costal elites BS, the virus evidently doesn’t.

I do think people see this whole thing differently depending on where you are. I’m in NYC where there are a lot of cases and I probably see things differently than someone in a less populated place. I have been going for walks early in the morning in the nearby residential streets which are quite deserted. I have gone to the bank and That is pretty much it. My husband does the groceries. I consider myself lucky I have a backyard to sit in the sun, I have been pulling out weeds like crazy. I can’t quite imagine myself rushing to go to the movies, the mall or a sports event, definitely not the gym. Just because things are back open doesn’t mean the virus has gone away. The numbers can spike up again as more people start moving around again. What I will miss is my travel.

I canceled my membership yesterday. I hadn't been for a while anyway and I knew after this I really wouldn't feel comfortable going back. Canceling... My Cousin (44 years old) is recovering from Covid and she is having heart trouble. She was in great shape, exercised and had no prior history of Heart issues. There is so much we do not know yet about the Virus and I am not taking chances.

I live in a small town with a small gym. I haven't stopped going. We have to sign up for work out times. Only 10 members at a time. I wipe down everything before I use it and after I use it. I will be more hesitant when the re-open on Monday and more people can be in the gym.

I have not belonged to a gym in years after I got repeatedly sick after joining one. I am normally healthy, but I got cold after stomach bug after cold. Stopped going to the gym and got healthy again. So I have never trusted that gyms are a good idea in terms of germs. Not going to change my mind now

Until you have someone who is affected by this you will not comprehend how bad it is. Oh, and Midwest....yes, I’m there too. I live in a neighborhood where a first responder and National Guardsman regularly party. Please take your chances. Please.....we need people who will volunteer to be examples for everyone else. That’s what I’m also hoping for from the states who are opening up things that aren’t essential. I cannot wait to see how they play out. It all makes for educational tv.

As someone who can work ONE of my jobs from home (my other two jobs evaporated with the spread of the virus), I see it as my responsibility to stay home and socially distance. This is not because I enjoy sitting on my tuffet ordering fancy salads to be delivered ( ), but because it helps reduce the spread of the virus for my loved ones who are essential workers and have no choice but to be out risking their lives. It is the doctors and nurses living this nightmare who are begging people to stay at home. kibblesandbits, there are lots of people on the coasts who are choosing financial security over safety. And there are plenty of people who have chosen safety over financial security. I'm sure there are bonbon eaters here somewhere, but from my vantage point, it's the people who haven't been touched by the virus who have the LUXURY of thinking everything can go "back to normal". If you've lost someone, there will never be "normal" again.

Where are the gyms getting the cleaning supplies (wipes, sanitizer)? They are so hard to find in our area, even the stores that usually have the hand sanitizer pumps or touchless sanitizer things (not sure what they are called) are empty. I wonder if they just have a big stash of it, and because many were closed a month or more they have enough to keep them in business?

Yeah it’s like the coastal states provide no produce, no livestock, no essential workers and no military. JFC.
