What do you think?
I just can’t imagine the sweat. I know they say they will clean. I know the participants are supposed to clean off the machines. My gym has wipes about the size of a Kleenex to use, at least they did when we were locked out.
The weight machines are kinda close together, but not like the treadmills or ellipticals.
Spin classes have the bikes close together and the room isn’t that large.
I heard somewhere...maybe Georgia the health club they interviewed was allowing every other machine, no lock rooms and limiting the number of people in there at a time.
I just don’t know if I’ll feel safe returning to mine. I did say to my husband that trainers should go back to home visits.
Thoughts......

I canceled my membership yesterday. I hadn't been for a while anyway and I knew after this I really wouldn't feel comfortable going back.

Depends on the gym. A 24 Hour Fitness? Absolutely not. A smaller gym with way less members and a more dedicated staff? Absolutely but probably not right away.

Nope
People can’t clean up after themselves. I can’t get my kids to scrape their plates as they walk by the garbage can, I would not trust that they would clean gym equipment.
Plus I know 3 people who got mersa at g@ld’s gym.

My gym size is average to big I guess.
I too have thought about cancelling my membership. I have training sessions I have paid for and haven’t used. Maybe those wouldn’t be bad. I could use them all up then cancel. Maybe if I do my cardio outside, then go there for weights. Then by the time the weather gets cold things will be more under control.
I too don’t feel they clean very well.
I’ve been shopping when we need something. This experience has taught me that no matter how I feel to the world I’m old due to my age. My husband has a compromised system due to his history of cancer. So I guess we have things to think about.

It’s not the wiping down of machines that concerns me about gyms.
It’s the heavy breathing that exercise unavoidably causes that concerns me.

I go to a small crossfit/boot camp gym. We have no shower or locker room to worry about. They've talked about what they could do on reopening. One would be to have a class. Then an hour break to clean the room. Then have another class. And repeat the cycle. All members would have to clean whatever they used in class. The only machines we have are Assault Bikes and rowers. They can be moved and we could even move them outside. They would also limit the number of people per class, and no mingling and hanging around after class.
Now, having said all that, I might wait about two weeks before I go back. Just to make sure, you know. But, I will go back.

My husband is a personal trainer. He said their gym won't have classes (like spin classes or aerobics). No locker rooms open to change in and no kid care. No classes with more than one person at a time. People will have to sign up for an hour to come in and workout.

I can do my own wipedowns, wear gloves, whatever. But I can't control sharing indoor airspace with a bunch of heavy-breathing people!

No. I've actually come to prefer my home workouts anyway. Assuming we go back to school in August, I'll get all the germ exposure I need there.

I belong to the Y and I miss swimming like crazy. I would go at 6:30, swim a mile and be home and dressed for the day by 8:00 at the latest. I can really feel it in my back when I don’t swim. If I can get there when they open at 6:00 and practically have the place to myself I might be tempted to return sooner.

I cancelled my membership. Mostly because there is no way to know how long this will last and I don't usually go very often in summer either way.
Here gyms have been open the whole time and I haven't been going. I don't think that is essential, I can work out at home and go for walks.

My ds uses the Military base gym since he’s in the Military. He can’t wait for it to open. Weight lifting is his addiction. He’s going crazy having to come up with new ways to workout in his 1 bedroom apartment. He will be first in line to make an appointment to go. That’s what they have been told will happen. Hour long appointments with only a certain amount of people allowed in at a time, depending on how big the gym is. Social Distancing will be strictly enforced as well as disinfecting everything.

I'll be back going in, but for the water aerobic classes. Although I can't see them doing classes, we could keep 6 feet apart in the pool. I think that the recommendations will probably be to stay home for the over 65 crowd and that takes care of 3/4 of the class right there. I could probably use the treadmill, but really would just prefer to go out and walk. I've heard some talk about open for an hour, close for 1/2 hour and clean, taking half of the equipment out.

No way. And not because stuff doesn’t get wiped down enough. A choir in my state met together and 40 out of 60 caught covid 19, when all they were doing was breathing deeply/singing in the same space. Way too much deep breathing in a gym for me to feel safe. If one asymptomatic person is in there exercising? Nuh-uh.

I’m a member of our local community centre and i attend aerobics classes usually 5 mornings a week. Our community centres and gyms had forced gov’t closure a while back (centres first. Gyms a few weeks later). My physician Dh says they’ll be the last thing allowed to open. My aerobics classes would have 50-60 people. We’d get equipment from the equipment room. Mostly women aged 40-75.
I also thing gyms will be last to open because of the spread of germs with everyone in a small, confined place.
Community centres are currently being asked (by gov’t) to look into offering some aerobics classes / kids programming outside. That’s great when it doesn’t rain.
If my fav aerobics classes opened up again I’d think twice before going. Which is hard to say because in the thread about what 3 thinks do I want to open up I put gym. I feel like our soul cycle and other small gyms like that will be done.

We belong to 24Hr, the one we normally go to is a smaller one. But I don't plan to go back for a while. I don't feel like it will be 'safe', as many seem to go when not-so-well, and honestly, the cleaning seemed lacking a bit before the virus hit. DH was just diagnosed with an immunity issue, so he won't be going for quite a long time, and I don't want to unnecessarily bring anything home. There have been a few emails from 24Hr about potential changes they will make when the gym re-opens, but I'm still going to wait awhile.

Breathing....yeah, kind of important and dangerous at the same time.
I bet even if they do open or when they open the pools won’t be opened. Why? What did the dr say the other day on tv about pools/people/fecal matter? Ugh.....

So, yes, as soon as the gym opens I'm headed there. Honest to god, it's only here on the board where I'm hearing "I'm staying in until . . . " whatever - vaccine, 2 weeks clear, etc. Out in the real world here in the midwest (the great flyover states, for you elite coasters) we are just doing our thing, using the prescribed precautions and keeping on trucking. Otherwise, how do you think you're going to get your food picked, processed, and to the grocery stores so you can sit on your tuffet and order online?

Shall I keep going? Enjoy the view from your high horse, and enjoy the blessings of being ABLE to sit out this pandemic in your own home. It's only the little people that have to hustle and take the chances. I get it.

Not coastal elites or midwesterners or regular folk. There isn't a 'we' vs. 'you'. There are immunocompromised, elderly, asthmatic, and regular folk all over this world. And we're all doing our best to try and get through a really tough time. I'm really sorry that you feel that way.

There's the people that can afford to put their lives on hold, and then there's the ones to whom the burden of providing for those that can falls. We've never been all in this together. You must recognize that. There is a "we" v "you". Otherwise EVERYONE would have the luxury of denning up in their home and not have to choose financial security over safety.

Of course we are all in this together. There are plenty of people who who are manning the hospitals, building ventilators, running grocery stores, and farming. It's not just a choice of financial security. Everyone I know is trying hard to do their job in a crisis, in whatever way they can. Those who can work at home are trying to make it safer for those who can't.
I don't know why you're trying to pit one part of the country against another. I don't see it that way. I guess I see the people who are staying home as trying to do their best in a really difficult situation and trying to keep this virus from spreading. The entire country is in a crisis, and I have no idea how it's all going to play out. But I do think that for the most part, people are doing what they can to keep the death rates as low as possible, and if that's staying home and out of the public to keep the virus from spreading, then that's what they are doing. And we all appreciate those who are continuing to work in public to keep the country going, whether that's for financial security or obligation or duty. And that's why I feel that we are all in this together.

It’s not the wiping down of machines that concerns me about gyms. It’s the heavy breathing that exercise unavoidably causes that concerns me. My gym is smaller and not that busy. I could manage wiping the machines too and had a whole plan - change before going and bring my own wipes, go straight to machine, wipe it down with my own wipe, wipe it down when I'm done, walk back out - touch nothing else. BUT the breathing has me concerned. There is 0% chance I would go to any class in those small rooms. The spin class rooms especially are tiny and between the sweating and the breathing I'm pretty sure they're a death trap. So now I'm not sure. It's killing me not going to the gym. I've been looking at buying a bike or elliptical this week, but everything looks sold out.

I will be going. I miss the weights. I have been walking, and doing some online exercises, but I really miss the weights. The gym is connected to the hospital, and is also used for the physical therapy patients. The majority of people that use the gym are older,70-90 and retired so I imagine there will be lots cleaning in place to ensure their safety.

Otherwise, how do you think you're going to get your food picked, processed, and to the grocery stores so you can sit on your tuffet and order online? We are all looking at things from different perspectives. I don’t know what your numbers look like. But here in NJ we are one of the top 3 I think. And granted, most of the cases are in north Jersey with a more dense population than in south jersey were I am. We are required to wear a mask to go into a store. We are not allowed to do practically anything but grocery shop for the foreseeable future. Although they opened up the parks today, but if people don’t social distance they will be shut down quickly. Dd goes to a college in FL that is year round. I’m still trying to figure out what that’s going to look like for her. She either needs to self quarantine 2 weeks when she gets there, (per FL rules for people coming from NJ, NY, CT) or maybe she can visit her boyfriend in PA for 2 weeks and quarantine with his family before they are due back. So we are all looking through things with a different lens. Be that as it may, do what you need to do. There are things I need to do, and when I’m able I will. But things I just like to do will have to wait awhile. A gym would be on my list of places that would be at high risk for germs, yes other places are too, but you can’t very well wear a mask at the gym. You need to be able to breathe deep. But I’m not a gym goer anyway so my opinion doesn’t matter.
