What natural remedies have worked for you? I cannot take hormones because I have MTHFR. I need a hormone free remedy for these damn hot flashes. I feel like I am cooking from the inside out!
Help me, please!

I’m on HRT so I’m not sure I can be much help. When I started menopause in 2015, I was hot AF, losing hair in droves and had insomnia. I read about Black Cohosh back in the day. There were some mixed reviews but every body is different. I hope you find something that helps you. Been there done that. I could’ve streaked in Siberia In January and been totally fine.

I found sage to be pretty helpful but if I remember correctly there are a few contraindications so check those first I got it in tablet form at the pharmacy or health food shop. I have mentioned it on threads here before and I thought a couple of other peas also found it helped with hot flushes.

I was using Evening Primrose with a bit of success when they first started, but it isn't really helping these days.
They are ramping up in frequency for sure for me.
Now if my effing period would take the hint and quit coming every 26 days like clockwork, I'd be a happy camper.

On a lighter note, my mom hated the term "hot flashes" when she was going through menopause. She preferred to call them "power surges."

It's not hormones, but Effexor (venlafaxine) works really well for me. I started it last year when I was depressed during my husband's cancer treatment (and PS, he had to take it too, also for hot flashes as a side effect of his treatment, but his dose was around 4X mine). I take the lowest dose and only have maybe 1 per month or fewer now. Still in earlyish peri though.

I can't take hormones due to past history of a stroke; after having my ovaries removed (ovarian cancer) my oncologist recommended Estroven, which is a natural supplement. "Menopause Relief + Stress" is the exact one I buy, from Costco. It contains black cohosh for hot flashes & night sweats, magnolia bark for managing stress, and green tea + yerba mate to boost energy.
I figured if my oncologist recommended it with my health history, it's got to be pretty safe. And I do think it's effective, or else I was lucky-- I only had hot flashes for a few weeks after my ovaries were removed, and I only get a *very* occasional one since that time.

I used Amberen and it helped greatly. It took about 3-4 weeks for it to fully work but the hot flashes went away. I don't know what I would've done without it.

I've never taken hormones because of the risk of breast cancer. I too have MTHFR but I've never heard about not taking hormones because of it. Can you please enlighten me as to why this is the case?
To answer your question I've been in menopause and have had hot flashes for the past 10 years. I use Evening Primrose Oil but I think it depends on where you get it as to how effective it is. I see a doctor called an Integrative Medicine doctor and he sells the supplements he prescribes for me in his office. I can also buy them online (he certainly doesn't require me to buy them in his office) but the brands are what they call physician quality or something like that. Anyway, the brand I'm using now is called Jarrow Formulas and I order it from this website pureformulas.com The version I get has soft gels that are 1300 mg. each. I take 3 each night and it really helps to get rid of my hot flashes. If I run out I'll get a hot flash every hour. Once I'm taking them regularly it cuts the hot flashes down to one a day. It's not expensive either. It's about $10.00 for a bottle of 60 capsules.

Evening Primrose oil is helping me some. I've taken it for over 20 years for PMS symptom relief, and it seems to be helping with my perimenopause symptoms too.

Have you tried just putting ice packs under you arms if you are at home. It worked for my mother. My problem is that I am getting hot flashes in the middle of the work day. I was literally having one today and my coworkers both saw me turn red from the heat flash. Ugh. This really sucks. How do women survive this?
