I am clueless and need help trying to use kindle. I got a Kindle paperwhite in March because I had no idea if libraries would reopen soon. I haven't used it yet (technology challenged) but am running out of library books. And our libraries still haven't opened or allowed curbside pickup. So I have to use my new kindle and have some (very dumb) questions.
1. I saw on Amazon that they have a special for Kindle unlimited. It looks like you can cancel any time. So is this like checking out a library book, where you have to "return" the book within a month? Can you pick any book or is there a limited number? Is it worth it?
2. Are there good places to look for inexpensive books besides Amazon?
3. What is Libby? Can I install that on my kindle to check out books from the library?
4. I look up books on Amazon a lot. Some books say something about it being a kindle book. So are some books only published on kindle? When I try to find these books at my library, they don't carry it so that's why I asked if they are only published on kindle.
This pandemic and having to rely more and more on technology is really making me look dumb in the eyes of my family! I can't do anything!

While we are asking Kindle questions, I have one too.
I have a Kindle Paperwhite. I am an Amazon Prime member, and also have the Kindle app on my iPad.
Sometimes I will see a book that interests me on Amazon. It’s usually something that’s a “deal”, like the .99 offers. Using the Amazon app, I will try to purchase it, but it will only allow me to get a sample, not download the whole book. To do that, I think I’ve had to use the actual Kindle to page my way through the sample and then I can buy it. Why can’t I just buy it on Amazon right off the bat.

This pandemic and having to rely more and more on technology is really making me look dumb in the eyes of my family! I can't do anything! I prefer to borrow books using my laptop, rather than the Overdrive/Libby app on my phone. Here's what you do: 1. Go to your library website on your laptop/computer, find the ebook you want to borrow. 2. Borrow it. 3. Go to your list of borrowed books, find the new ebook. 4. Choose download, and choose "Kindle format". 5. Then it should take you automatically to Amazon where you'll see "borrow library book". Click that. 6. Go to your Kindle. Open the Kindle, swipe it on, and the book might start downloading automatically. 7. If it doesn't download automatically choose "settings" and then "sync" a few times. 8. If it still doesn't download hit the "search" option and type in the name of the book. It should pop up, you click it, then it will start downloading. Since you have a new Kindle you can probably skip steps 7 and 8... My Paperwhite has stopped automatically downloading for some reason. I think it's tired from all the books I've borrowed since the pandemic.

About Overdrive/Libby. Check your library to see which they use. Download that onto your phone from the app store.
Open the app, and add your library.
As I said, I prefer to borrow ebooks using my laptop. But I do download audiobooks sometimes on my phone. Also, there's a feature called "Grab and Go" at my library. A lot of libraries have something like it. It's books that are popular that the library keeps free of the hold system... So as soon as someone returns it, it will become available for the next person. I check that frequently. If I see one I'll quickly borrow it via the app on my phone, then I'll go to the website from my laptop and then follow the steps that I typed up in my previous reply.
Honestly, it sounds more confusing that it is. Once you do it a few times you'll see how easy it is.

Iirc, that problem is a “fault” of the app and if you log into the Amazon web site you can buy and download the whole book there, without paging through a sample.

1. If you have prime.. kindle unlimited is free.. if not it is 9.99 a month.. cancel anytime.. you can a lot of books off unlimited but only 10 at a time.. when you finish 1 you can "return" it and get another... not every book is on unlimited... most best sellers or new releases are not...
2. Besides kindle unlimited and ur library there are different emails you can get that will send you an update of books you can get for free or really cheap... i subscribe to bookbub... every day i get an email with a book in each of the different categories i have chosen... some i download.. some i dont... i get this email every day!!
3. Our library doesnt use libby...
4. Yes.. some books are only released on kindle..
Give it a try... i love having a ton of books in my purse... choose whatever i want... i used to be a die hard only book kind of reader... needed to feel the pages n smell them.. i have converted...
I love my kindle!!

Subscribe to "Bookbub" - every day they list discounted books. It's really helpful.
I have a Paperwhite and love it.

Kindle Unlimited is not free with a Prime membership. It's still $9.99 a month. With Prime, you get Prime Reading, which is access to a smaller database.

I would look at the books available and see if that’s what you like to read. I think it would be worth it for several months at least no matter your preference. But, there are a lot of newer authors and frankly some really crap writing. I know, I read sports romances 4. That’s entirely possible due to less established authors choosing to e-publish.

It’s the same with the Kindle app, you can not purchase through it. I’m wondering if it is a liability thing.

Libby is the new Overdrive app. I use it to borrow ebooks and audiobooks. The ebooks will take you to Amazon to borrow.
It is very easy and user friendly. You do have to have a library card for each library that you want to use.

So is this like checking out a library book, where you have to "return" the book within a month? Can you pick any book or is there a limited number? Is it worth it? Please look at the books that are marked kindle unlimited to see if it is worth it to you. The selection they offer is not worth it to me.
2. Are there good places to look for inexpensive books besides Amazon? Modern Mrs. Darcy and Bookbub both have signups to receive an email every day with 5-10 free or reduced books on kindle If you have Amazon Prime your eligible to buy 1 book/month from their Amazon First selection of newly released kindle books and a discount if you want additional books from the list (watch here at NSBR for the link around the first of the month). With Amazon Prime you are also able to check out prime books. I think you can only have 1 at a time.
3. What is Libby? Can I install that on my kindle to check out books from the library?
My public library uses Overdrive for ebooks. Libby is the app associated with that
4. I look up books on Amazon a lot. Some books say something about it being a kindle book. So are some books only published on kindle? When I try to find these books at my library, they don't carry it so that's why I asked if they are only published on kindle.
On Amazon they will tell you the book and the different ways you can purchase the book. Usually there is a different price depending on the kind you purchase (hardback, paperback, kindle, audio) I haven't seen any that are available on kindle only but there may be some. I think authors who want to self publish can do so on kindle.

One thing to keep in mind, often the $0.99 book deals you might see are just not worth it. Sometimes I don’t think they’ve even been edited. I’ve wasted a lot of time reading these cheap books with bad storylines so make sure you check the reviews or research the author prior to purchasing. On the flip side, I’ve also found some great authors so just be discerning.

Great instructions! Thanks! I hope to get the hang of this soon. I have been putting off trying to learn it knowing this would be very hard for me. And I can't go to Carnegie Library for in person help.

Ours will take calls from 9-12 every day.

Thanks so much for the tips and advice! I appreciate all of it and can't wait to get started. My husband even figured out to get an audio book on his phone from our library to listen to.
