I wonder how many times he beat the shit out of her. I'm glad she feels safe enough to get out now.

Did she give a reason?
I was wondering if it’s to protect assets. Of course I hope she was not abused, but If he is civilly sued, they could lose everything. If she has it all in her name with a divorce decree, I bet a lot of assets would be spared.

Considering she stood by him and endorsed his similar behavior multiple times in the past, it's hard to imagine it is a matter of anything but protecting their assets. Mmmh. I had no idea. Now I think I guessed right.

But maybe not. When you live with someone that is that volatile, you don't get to have your own thoughts. You don't get to speak your own mind. I am hoping that it isn't about assets. BUT- even if it is at this point- I'm guessing the girl is gonna get a taste of free thinking and feeling good- and not being told how to be/think/act and this will be something else completely. Call me an optimist.

I asked DH what he would do off he was in her position and faced with a life of negative public attention. He said he would cut his losses and get out too. I agree. If she stays with him, life will not be easy for her even after he goes to jail. At the very least, he will bankrupt them in attorney fees. Yeah, cut your losses.

When your husband is in a picture at a MAGA rally wearing a red hat that says “make whites great again” and you & your children stay, you get zero sympathy from me. ZERO!

I can't imagine he hid his racism from her, but who knows. Serial killers kill for years and hide their secret life well

She’s protecting her money. This. This was my first thought. I am no lawyer but I think this divorce is probably a move to make sure some of their money is safe in case victim’s family decides to sue her husband?

Oh, ok. I had not heard Chauvin's brother-in-law was one of the other officers present. ETA: I don't see any reliable source that confirms the relationship between Thao and the Chauvins.

I thought to myself yesterday, how could I stay married to a man who did this horrid thing?
I wasn't even thinking about protecting assets. But no friggin way could I even pretend for a minute to support that asshole.

I googled the officer pictured above, Tou Thao. He has been a police officer there for 10 years and has had previous complaints of excessive force. From my quick search, he is not the brother of Kellie Chauvin. Her brother has a different first name. Thao is a very common last name in the Hmong community.

It is also possible that she believed him in the other cases..."It was all exaggerated" but when she saw the video she said it was all too much. I know I could never live with someone who did what he did.

I don’t know her history, the reasons she’s stayed with him or supported him in the past. I don’t know if divorce will protect much in the way of assets, or if there are children she needs to protect.
I only know that if my husband did this, I would never want to spend another minute in his company, much less let him lay his hand on me again.

I don't know when the other charges took place but they've only been married 10 years. They do not have children together. Were they recent charges? She was divorced with two children when they met. Her ex has since died.
It sounds to me that he's a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character and he could very well have been someone totally different at home and when this happened it became apparent to her who he really was and she wanted no part of it. She fled Laos when she was very young because of the civil war there and the family came to the US as refugees so I would imagine she is well aware of having to live with violence in her life, that never leaves you. It seems she wasn't prepared to excuse this or be part of that again .

I wonder if it was her chance to make a run? It's easy to demonize a woman for staying with a very bad man, who does very bad things. But it's not like they're necessarily his accomplice or supporter. Even if they have resources, leaving is not that simple. They may feel completely trapped in the situation. And for good reason. You leave, you risk your life, and other people's lives.
He murdered a man in front of a crowd in the middle of a city street in broad daylight with cameras rolling. What do you think he did to her behind closed doors? Anything he wanted to.
If she was staying until she had her chance to run for it, I can relate to her.
