I got a new iPhone! I turned on iCloud for my photos so I could transfer them from my old to my new phone, then turned off iCloud. (Not enough storage space in iCloud and I don’t want pay for more space). iCloud says it will keep them for 30 days then delete if I don’t buy more space.
My question is this....I don’t NEED to have iCloud for my photos right? Since I transferred them they are safely on my new phone correct? How can I tell they are downloaded on phone and not just on iCloud?

That totally confuses me too. Call Apple! They can explain it all in simple words!

icloud has me so confused, too. I'm afraid to delete anything and I don't want to pay for space. I'd like to be able to add to my notes and not be told I'm out of space. Sigh.

daisydonna you don't need to have icloud but are you backing up photos to somewhere else in case? I just keep it as one of my backup options because of the convenience. A couple of things you should check I think. First on your phone go to settings > your name > icloud choose photos and just check that Optimise Iphone storage is not checked (otherwise photos will not be in their original high resolution version on your phone). If it was checked you will want to switch to 'download and keep originals' and redownload them all. Second, on new phones I understand the format HEIC (High Efficiency Image) is now being used by default to save space and this can cause some compatibility issues if you're trying to get photos printed, backed up to 3rd party apps etc. I would probably disable HEIC as the default type so all images will be stored as JPEG.

It so confusing. I turned it on once and it put all my pictures from my phone on my ipad and I ran out of space!
Best advice is back up your pictures to a computer using Photo transfer or some other app...then turn it off and see if they are still on your phone.

If you care about the photos, back them up. There are dozens of threads on 2Ps about the different services. If you have so many photos that you need to pay for Cloud storage, you don’t want to keep them only on a phone that can so easily get lost or misplaced. Many other services don’t use iCloud, but do use the “Cloud” in general to store data. If you use iCloud, it helps with the sharing of information across your Apple devices. I use Dropbox and iCloud, as well as my Mac. I have over 70,000 photos and pay for 10TB of iCloud storage, which is $10 a month. But extra storage can cost as little as $1 a month, depending on how much you need. Surely $12 a year is little enough to pay for peace of mind? As anniefb said, also change your phone settings so that you only have a smaller version on your phone. The full size is then kept on the Cloud. Because of that, I can view all 70,000 thumbnails on my devices, but can access the full file when it’s needed.

Since I transferred them they are safely on my new phone correct? Nothing is "safe" when it comes to photos, and the idea of only having photos saved to your phone makes me hyperventilate! What if you lose your phone or drop it in water and destroy it? Like Basket1lady said, if you care about your photos, back them up. I would download them all onto your PC or laptop, then try and work out if they are on your phone or just on iCloud - I'm not sure how to do that, sorry. Good luck!

I use copy trans to save to my computer. Apparently they are still all on my phone as well, but I have enough space some how. I have a lot.
Digital data is stressful. 🤣

iCloud is SO easy though. I have it set to automatically back up everything - contacts, notes, photos, etc.
I have a ton of photos, and even download my real camera card to my phone, because I like to do my photo editing on my phone.
I bought a $25 iTunes card at Walmart. I entered that into my account and it takes out .99 each month to give me a ton of storage. Every could years a buy another one.
.99 a month is totally worth the simplicity!

I pay for icloud. I have 57,000 photos. I have had back up drives go bad on me. I have lost some photos as a result. I will pay $10 a month for peace of mind.
Turn off icloud and see if the photos are on your phone. If they are, then you know you have them. But only having them on your phone is not a great system as others have said, what if you lose your phone, it breaks, etc.? Apparently there are flash drives you can get for your phone. At least back them up to a flash drive.

I also have the Google Photos app on my iPhone. It automatically backs up every day and if I delete them from my phone, they do not disappear from Google Photos AAAAAND I can access them from my computer at any time. I can also add photos from my computer and see them/download on my phone. It's also a nice way to create albums and share them if you want.

I just got a new phone over the weekend, and I didn't realize that. I went into the camera settings and changed it; I would have been pissed if I couldn't get my photos to print, since my phone is the primary way I get pics for my scrapbooking now.

Thank you thank you! I ended up turning on iCloud for my photos. I agree pretty risky not having them backed up to somewhere.
Again thanks so much for your help!
