The thrill of having something on your line, even if it is a small bluegill/sunfish is real. That catfish was amazing - the lake is full of 1/2 pound small catfish, which is what we usually catch there - and we were able to see that it was big as I was reeling it in. Lots of fight. I think it is great that you are taking it up again! I highly recommend the Palomar knot, it is very strong and easy to tie. I stink at clinch knots and have lost a lot of hooks using it. I rarely lose anything with a palomar knot - it is usually when my line breaks. I hope that your local pond has as many fish as our local ones. If not, you can always come and visit! thanks, elaine ! I will definitely check out that knot; I know I need to do some practicing with the knot-tying, especially. I don't know if there will be many fish to catch around here without getting out of the suburbs and going to one of the big lakes east of Phoenix, but I agree about the 'soothing' aspect of fishing as an activity. (We used to go fishing during my summer break from college, in the evenings after my mom got off work-- to a local-to-us private, man-made lake-- my parents owned a lot there for fishing rights. Most of the time, she'd have a magazine to read, and about half the time, she didn't even have bait on her hook, lol. She didn't care if she caught any or not, just relaxing and enjoying the lake.) I bought an ultra-lite rod, partly because it's like the one I used to use, but mostly because it's more fun to catch even a 2-inch bluegill and have it bend the rod practically in half!! I still need to buy a few more things eentually- net, cheap cooler, etc. because I would like to bring some home to eat (if I catch any large enough to make it worthwhile). But first, I think I'm going to practice casting with a cat toy at the end of the line. for some *cat* fishing in our living room!!

elaine, your fishing fun looked like a blast for the boys. I am sure they both enjoyed it, too. Also, you are very brave. I only touch edible dead fish I am going to cook.

I only like to touch them when they are alive! Could you just see the 2 of us fishing! But what a good time we would have.

My fishing started 4 years ago at a cul de sac block party when my neighbor - who I go with most days - got out some of his rods and taught me and a bunch of the neighborhood kids how to cast. We all spent the evening practicing. I went out and bought 2 zebco push button casting rod and reels the next day. Ds2 still uses the spincast - it is easier for him - and I use a regular spinning reel. I did just get an ultra-light rod and light weight reel for bluegill days. We also go fishing once a month at a stocked trout pond - those we keep and eat - and a lightweight rod is plenty. Your cat will love you if you practice casting for him/her.
