Hi! I have open inguinal hernia surgery scheduled for Monday (with mesh). Several weeks ago I was really excited at the prospect of finally having no pain there and being able to exercise again. Now, I’m really really freaked about the recovery and potential chronic issues. My husband pointed out the lawsuits over the mesh and I went down the google rabbit hole.
If anyone has any experiences they are willing to share (good or bad), I would really really appreciate it!

My husband just had this done a couple of weeks ago. So far, no complications. I was more worried about covid related stuff, not that he would get the virus, just all of the different procedures because of it. Longer & required intubation, no visitors etc. I hope your surgery goes smoothly

I had an incisional hernia repair a little over two years ago. Mine was laparoscopic and the hernia was at the belly button incision from my gall bladder removal years ago. Not the same as yours, but I do have mesh.
This was a lot more painful than the gall bladder removal was, but the worst of the pain was over in a few days. I can’t think of any issues I have had with the mesh, other than it makes using a navel incision in any future surgeries a no-go.

aj2hall thank you!! I’m so glad it went well!! Right now our county covid case counts are super low so I kinda see this “window” as an opportunity to get it done (coughing really really hurts). moodyblue thank you!!! Good to know especially about the mesh!! I had a c section in the past which is why I can’t do the laparoscopic (the scar is in the way). My c section scar burned for nearly a year afterwards so I am really hoping this won’t be as bad that.

My husband had one several years ago and didn't have any complications at all. Pray that your surgery goes forward with great results. Think of "no more pain." That might get you through it!

My 90 year old dad had this surgery a few years ago. He recovered fully and is active and healthy, walking 3-4 miles several times a week.
Good luck!

I had one scheduled for April 10. It was postponed but my Dr. made a point of telling me at the two appointments beforehand that they now use a different mesh and it is nothing like the ones that there are all kinds of law suits over. It is much safer and nothing to worry about. Not sure when mine will be rescheduled but I am hoping by the early fall.

DH has had two hernia surgeries - probably 15-20 years ago - with mesh. No problems whatsoever. In fact, with one he flew out to California to work within two days. Hope yours goes well!

I know some people have no problems with the mesh but I can't say I'm one of them. I had an umbilical hernia and another hernia at the site of my c-section scar fixed with mesh and now I have pain in that area when I sit in certain positions. It is especially bad when I'm driving. I wish I hadn't had the operation. Sorry, I don't mean to scare you but I honestly feel in my case I was better off before my operation.

Yep, I had an inguinal hernia repaired with mesh about 8 years ago. It was honestly a really easy operation. Not much pain afterwards at all. I had an overnight stay, I was on Endone for 1 day, then paracetemol after that. I definitely rushed a bit in lifting things and being active - Don't do that! I should have taken it easier for the first while. The mesh has caused me no problems. Sometimes, (very rarely) when I'm dancing, I will feel a twinge if I move strangely or into a funny position but that's it. That said, I still do handstands, splits, high kicks, everything no problem and it's better than having to push my hernia back in afterwards - ew! Good luck

Thank you SO much everyone for sharing!!! I really appreciate it!!! joteves I’m so sorry that turned out to be a miserable experience for you, but I really appreciate you sharing! Especially since I have a history of a c section too. Thank you!Sorry if it is TMI and of course don’t respond if you’re uncomfortable, but do you think it is because of fused scar tissue? Or a nerve thing? Did they give a reason why? We’d like one more child, and the risk of a repeat c-section has me worried too, but my Dr thinks I should take care of this before getting pregnant again. stacmac thank you, that gives me hope that, while I don’t dance or anything, I will be able to be active and work on flexibility again!!

My mom had horrible problems with the mesh. They finally removed it, and replaced it with pig bladder.

In my case, the doctors thought I had hernias on two incision sites, but it turns out that what I had was endometriosis which had adhered to the scar tissue. They decided to use mesh in both areas as the tissue there was too thin, or something like that. I recovered well from the surgery but I now have pain in both areas, it honestly feels like I have pins sticking into me and like my insides are going to rip. It's not constant, but when I am in certain positions. It took me a few years to realise that it was because of the mesh. I don't know if they still use this type now, my operation was 4 years ago.

I should probably add that I also got it fixed before the next baby. The doctor said the same thing to me. Not a problem in pregnancy. Maybe that's because I had no previous scarring or anything, my hernia was down in my groin.
