We love fireworks. Love them. Even my dog doesn't mind them, probably because we brought her to a display when she was 7 months old and she was having such a great time with everyone.
The problem with July 4 fireworks is the crowds, and around here the traffic. Trying to see the fireworks on the 4th itself is an all day event and my boys just don't do well with all the driving, walking, waiting, etc. Not to mention that we typically have an afternoon downpour in the Metro DC area on the 4th.
So, each year we try to find fireworks connected to something fun before the 4th. We've gone to a Bluegrass festival, visited some towns in WV that hold them early, etc.
This year we went ahead and bought tickets to see the Washington Nationals tomorrow night because they are going to have the Marine Rifle Corps perform afterwards and have a fireworks show set to music. And, nothing more fun for the kids than to see the Presidents race. We have already told the boys that these are our 4th of July fireworks, although we will still do our whole grill out thing on Friday and watch the DC fireworks on television.
Does anyone else here try to see their fireworks on a night other than the 4th?
(And yes, I'm ready to be flamed for being unpatriotic, but if I took my kids down to the Mall for the 4th Fireworks, there would be a whole thread about a mom and her melting down kids who ruined the holiday for someone visiting DC for the show).

Our church does a family night (picnic, games, inflatables, fireworks, and a salute to veterans) the weekend before. We went and had a great time.
We do get together with my dh's family the night of the 4th for a big family picnic, at a local park with lots of games and fireworks. We've been going for close to 14 years!

Our town did there's on 6/28. I like it because now I can just hang out and swim on the 4th and not worry about going to see the fireworks.

I don't blame you for not heading down to the Mall on the 4th. That must be an absolute zoo. Forget the kids melting down...I'D be melting down.
We'll see fireworks on the beach at Tybee Island on Thursday night. (unless Arthur forces a change in the plans of the fireworks dudes.)

Tybee Island sounds heavenly. I'll send dry thoughts your way.

Some of my relatives live in Wisconsin. For one of them, their town did their fireworks last Saturday. Seems like the crowds might actually be worse for something like that since people would go that would otherwise be busy on the 4th at family or other events.

Ball game - check! Marine Corps Silent Rifle Platoon - check! Fireworks set to patriotic music - check! The Nationals even did us the favor of winning. (Although it was unbelievably hot and muggy) My youngest turned to me in the middle of the fireworks turned to me and said "Happy 4th of July Fireworks!" So I'm counting it as a success.
