I've always been a Dell girl. I learned on a Dell when teachers were first given laptops back in the day. I've had 3 since then and now my 3rd one is dying. I had a new hard drive installed last year and it's time to let this one die.
I don't use it for work- just mindless surfing while I watch TV. I have an older iPad and can't get used to it. I just like a laptop.
Mine typically last about 4 years and I bought this one in November 2014.
I don't want to spend a ton of money- not over $600-700. I don't want to learn how to use a Mac. Any suggestions?

I'll be watching. We need to buy ds one for school. I have my 2nd Dell. I got my first in 2006 and this one in 2013 or so. So I keep them a long time too. We bought the kids an HP to share a few years ago and it sucks.

We use Dells at work .. I’ve been underwhelmed. Hard drive failures are common. I would guess roughly 30-40% in my user population. I’ve had a HD failure myself. The only way I would use a Dell at home would be with a daily backup. I have had the same MacBook Air for 9-10 years. I’ve had to replace batteries and power supplies 2-3 times.

my recommendation is to stay away from HP. Each one I’ve had was lucky to make it 2 years. I ended up switching to a Macbook.

We bought the kids an HP to share a few years ago and it sucks. You may want to check with his school to see what he needs. Our dd was given a pc to use at college from the college. It was a great brick. We had gotten her a MacBook Pro to use. The college pc remained in her trunk until she graduated. We purchased the laptop for her back in Spring of 2015. The computer is still going strong. If your son is going to do anything with graphics, video, photography you cannot beat a Mac for it’s capability.

They have an ASUS at that price point at Costco. I've had an ASUS with higher specs for a couple years and have been pretty pleased. We were looking at the $650 model for more daughter to take to college. The biggest downside is it has a 566 G SSD so it's fast, but not a ton of storage. It really depends on whether you have a lot of programs you need to install - or tons of video files. She really didn't need a large hard drive. We decided to buy her computer through her school so she'd have access to their service and loaners so can't give a personal review for that particular model. I will say Costco extended warranty is awesome.

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S340 at Costco. I think it was $750. It's perfect for me. I do the same things you do, plus a few spreadsheets.
It holds a charge a long time, it has a touch screen, it fires up REALLY quickly.

Well, my work Dell is amazing but cost $1,600, and at home I switched to a MacBook Air. I LOVE both my work laptop and home laptop but it doesn't sound like what you are looking for. Everything Dell for the price you are looking for I think will break and have problems.

Previously we used Dell (desktop and laptops) but they seemed to last only three years or so. We switched to HP because I used them at work and they were in for the long haul workhorses. My current machine I bought in 2017, because I dropped my previous one, purchased in 2009, and the housing cracked open. OP, maybe check into a Chromebook. DH only uses them for "mindless surfing" and light gaming. And they're pretty inexpensive.

A Mac is out of your price range then....but I just thought I'd mention that you don't need to "learn how to use a Mac". It's a laptop just like any other. You plug it in and start surfing the web. You don't even need to use their operating system (Safari). I use Chrome personally. There will be a small learning curve if you use the word processing (Pages... their version of the PC one whose name I've forgotten). Just thought I'd throw that out there if you ever find yourself in a position to get one. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/OrTI4SBmZ2ZYSFv6ag4f.jpg)

I have not had an issue at all switching to a Mac.

I’m a Mac lover as well. Dh is a dell lover. I DETEST dell.
I’m also not a chromebook fan because it doesn’t do what I need. However, if you’re mostly surfing the web and email, it might be fine. And they’re cheap.

I have a HP Spectre x360 that I love. It's a couple of years old with zero problems. However, I probably paid about double of what you are wanting to spend. Through the years, I have owned and had good luck with HP and Lenovo laptops and Dell desktops.

We've had several non Macs for the kids for school use. None have lasted much beyond their warranty. The computers I used for work also were only in circulation for two years before they had to be upgraded (Lenovo). I have found they get viruses, slow down, and become very frustrating. We've had better luck with desktops.
Good luck. Frustrating that a a machine can't last that long after putting $700 into it.

I got a new Dell laptop a few years ago and haven't had any problems with it. The husband of a former co-worker is a certified Dell tech guy, and I gave him the specs I needed/what I needed the laptop to be able to do (run InDesign and Photoshop, plenty of speed and lots of operating power). He (virtually) built a laptop and a desktop, and I decided to go with the laptop.

It is starting to get a wee bit slow, but it's probably bloated with software rather than a hardware issue. I have thought about wiping it and starting again, but I think I will start shopping for a new one this year or next

The ease of going from one to another is pretty simple. My only frustration is that the non Macs I use have horrible mouse/pad issues (compared to the Mac).

I'll be interested in reading responses. I use a laptop for the same purposes as you and I've had three Dells.

I have a Dell desktop because it is the only one that gives me the specs I want (at a price I want.) My first one lasted over 10 years and was still going but I wanted to get one with Windows 10. Replaced it with a Dell.
But my Dell notebook was very slow. Right now I have a Lenovo that was being discontinued and I got it at a big discount from Best Buy. It works great. It is a laptop with a touch screen and can also work as a tablet (albeit a very big tablet!) It will bend backwards so the keyboard is tucked behind. I rarely use it that way though.

The problem is not the brand(s) that you purchase, it is the hardware and specs inside the laptops. A laptop should have an SSD hard drive. It is MUCH faster then a regular hard drive and can hold up to the movement and abuse that a laptop goes through. A better processor is going to help your speed too. And make sure you have enough memory to keep up with what you are running. 8 GB is usually good but any less will often make things run slower. Dell and Lenevo do tend to be a little sturdier then HP. So for those who think HP is junk-that may be why. You should be able to find one in your price range that would have good specs. Although, prices and availability is limited right now because of all the Covid stuff and shipping issues. MACs seem so much better because they don't put junk hardware in their laptops or PCs. Unfortunately, too many people don't realize there is such a difference in hardware. They just see the prices. And, just in case anyone questions my knowledge-my husband has been in the IT, computer line of work for over 25 years. Self employed in IT, networking, computer builds and repair etc for 10+. If you have any questions, I'd love to help and if I don't know, I will run it past him. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

I loved my Lenovo, however, the body fell apart. It was fixed under warranty and then it broke again. It still works, but it isn't a moveable computer and I've replaced it with a desktop. I think the hinges may have been poorly designed.
